My neighbor planted Horsetail on her side of the fence, and now it keeps popping up on my side, in my garden. I keep pulling it out but more appear everyday. Any advise on how I can get rid of this unsightly nuisance!?
Getting rid of Horsetail
with difficulty is the answer to rid horsetail from the garden, all you can do is what you are doing right now, that is constantly pulling it up, try not to break off any bits of the foliage as it grows again soon as the bits hit the soil, the other thing you can try if you dont mind using chemicals, get a small old paint brush/make up brush, dip the brush into weed killer (suitable for tough weeds) and paint the foliage of the horsetail, you may have to do this a few times to really get hold of the plant, try to bruise the foliage before you use the killer as this plant has a protective oily coating on the foliage, the weedkiller will be taken down to the roots of the plant then die off, because it has to go down to the roots before it works, you wont notice the weedkiller working for about a week, dont water the plants when you apply the killer either, doing it this way, as with any weedkillers, it also insures that you dont get the killer onto any other plants close by, once the killer has dried on the foliage, it cant contaminate any other plants either, much safer than trying to spray when there could be a slight breeze blowing, these plants sometimes have long tap roots, that is the reason I say you may have to re-apply after a few weeks to really weaken the plants, the roots also sucker, so they spread very fast. good luck.
