Morning Glories 2007 #29

A - I just recently planted a President Bush seed. Hopefully it will germinate and grow nicely like yours. I really like the blooms. They got the bling bling thing going on and are just fabulous!! Love all your blue MGs, too! That little orange sloteri is so cute! Love the orange and yellow color combo! All are very nice as usual from you!

A, Apricot Candy is a cutie and marginata is striking with the colored eye.

Emma,

I wanted to be more detailed about the way I rooted the Joyce Cobb vine. My way is just my and it might not be the best way or it might be a copycat of somebody else`s method but it works so I do it this way every time.

I cut a piece of vine about 12 inches. Then on the bottom end that got cut off the plant I cut 1/2 inch below a leaf junction, snip off the leaf and buds there leaving the stubs attatched. I dip the end in root hormone and plant it about 2 inches into some moist fine grain potting soil and keep it watered regularly. I place it where it will get filtered sun and not get too hot for the first week until I can see growth. Then I gradually move it out where it can get more sun and finally allow it to grow in full sun.

Beth, pretty Gray Fog, like the star.

Karen, nice to see Pearly Gates again. I see why it's been around for
so long, it's lovely.

Willie - Lovely show of Wedding Bells! Quite festive looking!!!

Eva - Looks like you got a cross there! Nice one!

Jackie - Beautiful Akatsuki no Umi flower!!! I haven't seen a bloom on my vine for a couple weeks so it is either history or growing on the other side of my fence. We've had a LOT of rain lately, so I can't get around to the back of the fence to see what is growing there. Flooded all around my property. Thank goodness my home was built on a little construction hill. LOL! Lots of mesquitos and Cuben Tree Frogs, too. Ugh!!

Willie, very nice WBells, I love those colors.

Patootie, does your Akatsuki no umi have tan colored seeds? I have one blue blooming like that and don't know what it is called, it has the tan seeds.

Eva, very nice one there, almost wants to be tie dye..

The latest photo of the MG/gourd/grapevine tunnel. This is probably as lush as it is going to get since the weather is cooling.

Hi Ronni,
This one has large varigated cicada chartruse leaves.. Very large ruffly. I don't know If i took a photo of it..

Very nice blue on yours.

Beth, that tunnel looks fantastic.. the gourds should be alright for drying outside too during the winter.

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Beth, love your tunnel! Wish I had room for something like that.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Thanks Becky, I will send you a few No Umi seeds with your others.

A, the No Umi seeds are dark. I just checked.

Beth, love the no beni. I haven't done well with the lavendar/red moonvine.(turbinata)
Mine dies as soon as it makes 2 or 3 flowers. I tried removing the
forming seed pods and that didn't save my vine. I might start one for
this winter and see what happens.

Ronnie, lovely Kawaru

Oh goodie! Thanks, Jackie!

My MGs have been kinda beat up by all the rain we've had the past week. I also got rust on many of them, so have been pulling off leaves and treated each of them with Bayer Advanced Rose and flower care 3 in 1. Since I pulled off some of the leaves I now see the nicely forming seed pods! Some of the vines have quite a few pods, others not so many.

My Rebecca showed her first blooms today, but I didn't have time to get a photo. Prettier in real life than photos I have seen, so I was quite tickled!!!

Tonight, my moonflowers put on a show on the east fence. Some were blooming on the back fence, too. Here's a photo. You can see the wilted Cardinal flowers if you look closely. I love this combo together!

Beth - I LOVE your tunnel!!! I am seriously thinking of making one of those tunnels myself. The only thing stopping me so far is .... being in Florida we often get strong winds and I don't want the frame/fencing of the tunnel to get all beat up if we should have hurricane/ tornado weather. I'm still pondering how to do it. Maybe attached it to two 4" X 4" posts at each end to keep it from being bent or blown over? And somehow concrete the fencing into the ground to keep it from blowing away? I don't know yet.

Your Akatsuki no Beni is beautiful! :-)

Bummer .... I am kinda sad that so many of you are getting close to the end of the growing season. I have really enjoyed all the photos this year! I keep thinking that my MG grow-outs are starting to slow down and maybe come to the end of their life cycle, but today several of them have new vines (branches) sprouting at the base of the main trunk with more buds and flowers! I didn't know MG vines would do that. I thought all new growth came from the top unless pruned back or something. Very interesting how the older vine branches slow down and new ones show up. About half of my new starts have sprouted and are growing well. I don't know why the others haven't germinated yet. I may have to add another seed in each pot. Maybe all this rain has caused some of the seeds to rot.

Beth - That's really weird about the Lavender Moonvines flowering once and then the vine dies. I had gotten seeds last year for those vines. I planted about 20 seeds and not one germinated! Ha! Sounds like a very difficult MG to grow.

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

I don't know how the tunnel would do in high winds, but I would think it is so "open" that the wind would just blow right through.

My lavendar moonvines have not died after flowering once. They kept flowering all summer. Patootie is the one with
that happening and I have no idea why.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Beth, no idea. It's happened the 2 yrs I grew it so didn't start one this summer.
I may try one in the ground this coming spring. A couple of other growers
have reported the same thing happening to them. One member was in
India I think or it might have been Kaleem, can't remember where he lives.
The other one was here in the states somewhere.

Those are very nice flowers. All pretty pastel shades.

These are two white purpureas side by side. The one on the right looks cream with a white throat and was from festival sample seeds from MGJapan.

I see some bright candy colors coming in. Gourd, those are all really nice!

I`m unsure is this is a repeat but does anyone notice a sort of harmony with these colors? I thought they were interesting. Karen
