Wonderful NEW EE'S from LARI ANN at AROIDIA RESEARCH

Ripley, MS

Aunt B, I think I am in 7B-now according to the new maps.
We used to be 7, but now we have been assigned 7B.
You all are so sweet to threaten--ugh I mean support me--lol.
It has rained here all day yesterday and still raining today, seems strange having to stay inside. It has been a long time since we had 2 days of rain.
I hope it is getting over to GA where they are in a bad way needing water.

I saw the floods in NOLA, they sure don't need that, too bad it couldn't have been where they need some rain. I've wintered over basjoo in the the ground here in 5b, with some degree of success... maybe post something in tropicals, someone will be able to answer your questions. It was 35 degrees here last night.

Ripley, MS

Oh no, did you get frost? 35 makes me cold just to think about. It is getting cooler here today and still raining.
Sandra

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

It was in the 30's here as will. Yes I got some frost. But most of my stuff was in the GH. Except for a few things, waiting we see how those that were left out look like later. I did have two brugs out, I took cutting off them yesterday.

LOL..naughty AuntB!

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Rj, you talking about "doing bananas"? I think AuntB is innocent here, but at risk of sending this thread right down the crapper, do you do bananas?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL, I was referring to her enabling, I mean support.

Yes - I do banannas, although I'm still on quite a learning curve.

I'm trying to talk my friend Wayne into putting this one in my front garden. It had pups earlier this year, but they didn't make it. I'm still talking and the tree is still in his greenhouse ...

Actually, that one looks like it belongs in MY garden!! Keep talking! Meanwhile, a tip; plants that are variegated and that have an underground storage organ, like a tuber, require more phosphorus in their fertilizer. The "normal" levels of nitrogen fertilization are detrimental to plants like this. Just to know next time you get a pup . . .

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I did not know that...this goes for all varigated? because I have been on a huge varigated aquisition from EE's to philos.
I bet that's a problem with the banana, because it has been struggling.
Thanks for the tip!

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

It is more true for those with tubers, rhizomes or bulbs but to a lesser degree, it is true for all variegated plants. Any tissue without chlorophyll (flowers, bulbs, roots, rhizomes, tubers, white or yellow variegation) requires more phosphorus in the fertilizer.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

That is needed education..thankyou...Do you mind if I put that in my Garden Blog..I want to cut and paste it, and then copy the post number too.

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

That's fine, just so long as you keep my name in there so folks know where it came from.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

yes..that is why I also link the post number located down on the bottom of each post.
This way you can link only the posts you want instead of the whole thread.
Just right click the post #4116726 and click copy. That post number link will now be active to where ever you post it..

Thanks for the link example! I, too have learned something new this evening.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes..it's a fairly recent addition that is very handy

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

RJ do you have a name for the variegated banana that you are showing a picture of. It is very unique.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Great question, Linda.. (naughty once in a while, RJ, but always nice;) Do you mean very haRdy? Like very hardy in 9a? Or very hardy in 6 or even 5b? It might be enough to make me want to "do" some more nanners..

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Bonnie I think he said handy not hardy.

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

While you girls are waiting for Rj, I'll go ahead and tell you that the banana plant looks like what is know as an "Ae-Ae" banana. Even the fruit is variegated.

This plant can break your heart (and your pocketbook); Stokes sells them for almost $250 each. So losing one of these will really hurt. However, I've seen at least one plant locally that was around 15 feet tall, double stalked, and with a full head of variegated bananas on it. So it can be done. But probably not in 6 or 5b!

Also, Rj's "handy" remark referred to being able to use the post number as a link to a single post rather than a whole thread, not to the banana plant!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Oops! Thx Linda. No room for more that aren't hardy for me... well, maybe a couple small things.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

OMG $250 bucks. Wow I don't think I would be alive to talk about this banana if I got it and it died. If it lived it would almost be worth the money.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

For sure not on my "need" list, then. I'll bet it's a sight to see, tho. Rj, you're making me very curious about your inventory down there... Nice!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Go for it Linda, you will be getting that extension on the greenhouse,....right?... (teehee)

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Here's the link to Stokes if you just feel like drooling over it. . .

That leaves me out, I just read on there where it requires shade. I don't have enough places that are shady. So I will have to kiss the Ae-Ae good-bye.

Besides if I paid that kind of a price for a plant it would have to spend the winters inside my house. My king size bed now houses, me, hubby and two pugs. The Ae Ae wouldn't have any room.

Ripley, MS

No hope of me having it either. I don't want any big nannera anyway, but did want the little dwarf. I can handle it if I have to dig it up I think.
Lari Ann stretched it a little though--it is only 249.95--lol
I can't even spend that a year, much less on one plant--lol
Sandra

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL...Yes Ae-Ae is the winner.
Like I mentioned, I've been trying to talk my friend Wayne into putting in my garden, although LariAnn mentioned it would look good in hers too! So for now, I just visit it, and at that price..visits do nicely, although I think he gets a better price being in the trade.

Okay LariAnn here's how the blog looks when finished. Scroll down passed the "Seaweed extract and possible benefits" to "Symptoms/Remedies for Plant Nutrition", it's located near the top of the plant nutrition data Entitled SPECIAL NOTE FOR VARIGATED PLANTS
http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/t/rjuddharrison/1923/

The Seaweed blog is very long..so keep scrolling!

Thanks, Rj, looks good! Wow, you've got a lot of info packed in that there blog!!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

a bit of quick reference !

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

RJ, is your friend, Wayne, a nursery owner? I'd certainly love to see a mature specimen of one of those in person!! I bought a small one a couple of years ago, but it died over the winter. I haven't tried again. =^ Same with the Namwah Pearl variety. I've got "regular" bananas (over) growing a couple of beds at my house. One or two set fruit each year. I've eaten them, but my partner - who loves bananas - thinks it's weird to eat home grown bananas. I don't get it - they taste fine to me!

Mine's fruit looks about like the bananas you buy at the grocery store, except they are maybe just a little shorter and thicker. They have a nice "banana" flavor, though.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Wayne owns an online business,
what are you doing this weekend?
Rj

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Nada. I'll be home.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

You have Dmail

Dallas, TX

Just a reminder " BIG EAR FEST MAY 2008 " " Be there or be sad " Jerry

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Yep, if you're not here, then you're not "Ear"!

Dallas, TX
