Dallas, TX

Note= IT IS ALL OVER MY HEAD ANY WAY! I'am just a novice........Jerry

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

For all those who are anticipating the Big Ear Fest, I'll be posting pics of "big and bigger" Alocasias as they grow this Fall and Winter as I know all you folks in the colder north will need something to warm you up. Already my Alocasia x Brisbane Waves is holding 10 huge mature leaves, over 10 feet tall overall, which for me, with any Alocasia, is a record. Soon I'll have an equally monstrous Imperial Giant, Borneo Tsunami Waves (Borneo Giant x Portei) and plenty of others. And yes, I'm propagating so there will be plenty of Ears for everyone.

Jerry and Bonnie (sitting, hands politely folded in lap... eyes wide with anticipation . . .waiting-ever patiently) - - - --- for the slide show to begin. ;)

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

I'm waiting for the auditorium to fill up, everyone to get their snacks and drinks, and sit down!

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

You know, when crowds are restless and waiting for the show to begin, a little humor can lighten things up. So check this cartoon out; I had it done special for the Independent Plant Breeders Conference a couple of years ago.

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Shucks, LariAnn, this Borneo Giant is only twice as tall as I am! Can't you grow a larger one? And just look at those trunks! For shame! Should be twice that diameter!

(Slate, my son:) "Well, I'm gettin' tired of posin' next to all these puny-sized Alocasias! Let me know when you've got something BIG to pose me next to!"

(LariAnn takes a bow and leaves the stage for lunch . . .)

WOW! (B takes powder room break, returns and pulls out a sm. brown bag-lunch).... Those ARE BIG! The trunks, the leaves..... Slate doesn't look short, either! These are at Aroidia? Where we're going??

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Some, but not all. Some you'll see at Aroidia should be even larger by the time you arrive. The last two are representative of the kinds of sizes you can expect to see. Slate is a couple inches over 5 feet tall. I've got to take some more pics when I get out with the plants later this afternoon so I can post some more. Gotta keep a few back, you know, keep the tease factor up . . . when you get here, I don't want you to say, "Oh, I've seen all these before . . ." No, some you'll have to wait till you get here to see!

Well sure, tease us... Really, keep teasing. Aroidia IS the (real) magical kingdom, in Florida. :) Slate's size is just right... hope we get to meet him. Cute comic, too, I like the green pics, better. lol

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Oh, you WILL meet Slate; he's on the docket as the featured entertainment at the BIG Ear Fest! Both acoustic and electric guitar, with singing! No doubt he will sing "Margaritaville" as everyone sips away!

Plants, rita's AND music..... ahhhhh................

Lariann I am interested in hearing about this nursery near you that carries Colocasias. Are they mostly the commom TC stuff or odd hybrids and such. I am looking to expand my stock more. I am trying to find good breeding stock not to mention already interesting plants. Thanks

And to everyone on here. The visit to LariAnns place is amazing. The plants are huge and extremely well grown. And if your a breeder like myself you can apreciate all the work not to mention imagine what the new hybrids may look like. I have been collection plants for many years and I don't think their is anything more exciting than to have a very odd or interesting pot of hybrid seedlings growing. The potential for something amazing is just waiting to be grown. LariAnn has tons of these pots laying around.

PS the plants that I got from you are looking great. Also I should say it's great to have you on here I always enjoy seeing your new plants and this is a good place to get feed back on your work.

Here is another pic of the same Alocasia Mac black stem at Aroidia Research. Man all those plants are huge. Look foward to going back.

I think that Ken would be very interested in a Big Ear Fest next Spring.

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Here is a single seedling from a cross between my A. "Big Mac" and A. sinuata. This is still a baby; imagine how large it will be come springtime

And last one for today: a leaf of the Imperial Giant. These will be available at the BIG Ear Fest, although quite a bit smaller, i must say!

LariAnn, I just thought that i have seen gaint ee's before, boy was i WRONG!!!!!!!! I'am like a little boy in a candy store,so much to see and wanting everything! Jerry

Dallas, TX

AuntB, I've given up on brown bags , I'am bringing cotton sacks. I know you do'nt what they are! Jerry ( or do you )

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

The cotton flour sacks Grandma made my aunts' clothes from? THOSE cottons sacks? ;)

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

I think Jerry's talking about those huge sacks used for picking cotton in the old South!

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Are those gunny sacks?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Here's were my mind went: My mom has shown me and told stories.... she was born in 1932 and had 8 sisters and 5 brothers, Grandpa was a farmer so they didn't have a lot of money 14 kids! phew! Back then they bought flour and rice in sacks made of cotton. They were all different pretty prints and Grandma sewed them into clothes or at least tatted around the edges to make dish towels out of... I know a gunny sack, too real fibery and rough to the touch - 3-legged gunny sack races... Jerry! What ARE you talking about?
LariAnn, that BigMac x sinuata is a BABY? Good golly! (Oh, Jerry, Imperial Giant is on MY LIST-I'm trying to be organized with my spending-no implusive buying frenzy that way ;) - I hope VERY MUCH smaller for whatever kind of "bag" I end up with at the BIG Ear Fest...

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Yes, a BABY! I expect it to grow larger than both the Big Mac and the Sinuata, which if you've seen both on my website, means M-O-N-S-T-E-R! BTW, the Imperial Giants are still young'uns as well.

Also, when you SEE the Ears, self control will go out the window, so be prepared!

Oh, JUST as I thought, crazy plantpeople on the loose! Broken piggie banks, college funds going down the crapper, first born children being traded off, loan papers being signed..... I'm bringing JUST so much cash, that'll have to be my limit.... someone, must have SOME level of self control and a good digital camera to catch Jerry knocking me on the head to get the best and/or biggest plant first! lol

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

I'll be filming for YouTube, does that count?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Yes, it counts... (we'll never even notice) - eyes glazed over, in some kind of zoned-out plant funk - the Ultimate Ear Lovers plant fix! MUST get best one, BEFORE Jerry..... lol (I better watch out, Jerry must not be able to respond yet, I'll be prepared for a couple rations back from him, later)

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

You put these people on youtube they will be coming and shutting you down. Thinking you are selling dope. Because we will be acting so darn crazy. Trying to kill each other so we can have the biggest and the bestest.

omg OMG your ears are HUGE. I love them.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

LOL, Linda! Great! Still roflol!

Dallas, TX

AuntB, Cotton sacks are about the same as gunny sacks but they are bigger. You can and i will try to fill one of them up with them big ears! Your mother born in 1932, i'am wearing shirts that old! You are way too young to an AUNT B arnt you! Jerry

Dallas, TX

Placenciarita, True tropical77, Where are you two? You'll better be getting in on this! The more Texens the the better! We can't let all of them thar northern snow birds get all of them big ears RIGHT!!!!! Jerry

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

OK, time for another tease! Do any of you grow my Alocasia 'Portora'? Have you any idea how really BIG it can get? Well, let me SHOW you . . .(jaws dropping)

THAT'S how Portora, is DONE.
