Wonderful NEW EE'S from LARI ANN at AROIDIA RESEARCH

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I would bring it in if I were you, too, Sandra. Don't want to chance losing it.. but Brian has stuff growing hardy for him and I think he's also in 7B. Maybe you can experiment with it after it grows next season.. See, Brian, you're becoming famous!

LOL,
You know I have a special area that I call the "forgetaboutit" area - just for that very reason of giving too much TLC. 9.9999 times out of 10 the plants recover and do great. It works well since I don't pass by that area everyday like most of the other parts of the garden. That's my problem, is I'll notice some change and then start "trying to make it better" -

Ripley, MS

I don't have an area I don't check every day, I make the rounds sometimes 3 times a day if the weather is nice.
Sandra

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

RJ you know sometimes that is what it takes is a place called "forgetaboutit", cause I know sometimes I give my plants to much TLC and they don't do as well.

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

This discussion reminds me of a funny story; my huge Borneo Giant came from a nursery that had a "morgue" where plants that were given up to die were placed. I saw this little Borneo Giant there and asked the nurseryman if I might have it, along with an Anthurium that was also there. He consented (he'd already given up on them; that's why they were in the morgue).

You know the rest of the story. That Borneo Giant has been used in numerous successful hybridizations and went on to become the featured plant in my Ornamental Outlook article, and the Anthurium has grown huge and is being used for hybridizations.

Moral: always check out the morgue, the best plants might be there, and you can't beat the price!

I love it "The Morgue".

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I like that, I always check out the "morgue" at the box stores, I got a 3 ft Japanese maple for $30 last Spring at Lowes, reg $60. It had been dumped out of it's pot and just shoved back in, so I took it home, repotted, established my role as "loving caregiver" and it's doing fine. I love stories like that LariAnn, I always "root" for the underdog.

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Or should you say, the underdog "roots" for you! LOL!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

lol, I always hope it does.

My sister in law throws everything she thinks is dead down the big hillside behind her house, she has a beautiful hillside garden--lol
They seem to thrive there.
Sandra

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Does she tend the hillside rejects? Do you ever ask for something she's pitched over?

Ripley, MS

No, it is a steep hill and she is not much of a gardener, once she even put plastic flowers in her little bed she has around a tree.
She lives quite a way from me so we don't get to each others homes often.
Sandra

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Thanks, Sandra. I was just curious.... hard to tell what she has growing... plastic? not silk? My mom IS a gardener, but she decorates with silk flowers sometimes... to each his/her own, I guess. lol

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

I have one of those flower pot arrangements where you have 6 pots sitting on top of each other, and in the winter I put plastic flowers in them. With flowers and vines it looks good.

Ripley, MS

Oh her bed looked good too, do not misunderstand what I meant. I have trouble finding room here to place another living plant in the ground, much less an artificial one. It seems that the more I learn about certain plants the more I want.
It is a never ending battle on where to put them all--lol
Sandra

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Sandra WELCOME to our world.

Ripley, MS

I feel your pain--I have over 300 named daylilies and want soooo many more, now the ears have me fascinated and I also love coleus, balloon plants, bearded iris, Japanese Iris is my newest bed, I would love to make trades with any of you that have those.
Phlox and Lantana and verbena--I have to stop now---lol

That is how I obtained my C. Cooperi Australian Fern tree. It was in the to dump pile, with no fronds..Now it's enormus and growing a trunk.

I do dump all the potting soil on the garden beds..things I tried to grow a couple of years before begin to appear. See, that's how ya have to do it. Want tomatos? Just toss a couple over ripe tomatoes at a spot with a descent splat..and they'll grow..If I planted them in nice little containers, nothing would happen.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

We have had a few volunteer tomato plants. Then last year I had a brug that needed a little more soil and I didn't have any so I took a pot without a plant and dumped the soil into the brug pot. About a month latter I noticed there was a ee growing in the pot . For the life of me I can't remember having one in that pot.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I know what you mean, I have them popping out of alot of pots.

I threw some tomatos out 3 years ago that were in the vegetable drawer, and can you believe they reseeded the past 2 years.

OK, folks, time for another Big Ear Fest tease. This is the Brisbane Waves, and I tried my best to get a shot that would show all 11 (eleven) leaves, but you have to work to see a couple because there are so many that some are in front of others. How do you like this recipe?

Thumbnail by LariAnn
Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Very nice, scrumptious recipe. So 11 leaves has the top spot.

Louisville, KY

Very nice as always.

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

Beautiful just beautiful

LariAnn,What is the parentage of the BRISBANE WAVES. Jerry

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Jerry,
Parentage is A. brisbanensis x A. portei. This plant is the green version; there is a mottled stem version of which I got one seedling.

Dallas, TX

LairAnn,Please save the mottled stem for me, PLEASE PLEASE.Thank You, Jerry Or a green one anyway. Thanks!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Oh, beautious! I like the ruffley elongated leaves! So 11 leaves is the number to strive for... I want 12. Is there a list of plants available by you for us at the Big Ear Fest? I think most of us traveling down there, will have space/transportation limitations, even if we're driving a vehicle... I'm a planner, and organizer professionally, (I guess that carries over in some part of my personal life, lol) so I like to have a good idea of circumstances I may have to overcome before I'm looking at them head on... Yea, right Jerry, she's going to sell you her ONLY mottled stem one...

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Well, AuntB, why stop at 12? I might go for 15, who knows? Is this to be a new competition?

The plants available at the Big Ear Fest will be sizes that are manageable by folks like you, such as 4" or 6" pots. Unless, of course, someone brings along their firstborn (or cash equivalent) and wants to trade for a BIG plant! Anyone thinking about doing that should make provisions in advance for something in the 3 to 6 foot range and let me know which plant(s) of that size they'd like so I can custom grow it for them. I can't stock a lot of biggies like that (unless they are for breeding) as I just don't have the space!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

That's what I wanted to hear. 4-6 inch pots... makes room for more pots and more variety. It's not a competition, unless I move to Florida. I'd be thrilled with growing a huge healthy plant from year to year, no matter how many leaves it had. I probably will be bringing along my firstborn......................... ..... no, I can't trade her in..she waters during the day for me in the summer...and she's supposed to keep Jerry occupied while I'm getting the best plants! lol Oh, I forgot, Jerry and I have a truce... well, I offered anyway. Jerry?

Louisville, KY

LariAnn I am wondering how many forms are you planning on releasing? Are you releasing them to the public or are they going to be given a contract like some I have from you already? I would be interested in any you plan to release all of them I have seen were impressive.

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Actually, AuntB, that's a great strategy. Bring along your sexy, voluptuous firstborn and any guys (including Jerry) will be so ga-ga they will forget about the Ears, leaving you to get the pick of the best ones before they even know what's happening!

Brian: All the new releases will require a signed NDA covering them to be on file. Many DGers have already sent theirs in. If one covering the hybrid plants to be purchased is not on file, that person cannot purchase those hybrids, although they can purchase species plants and any others not requiring the NDA. So far the release planned is of the Imperial Giant and the Blue Portora, as those are ones in ample stock. Later, more may be added, such as the Reticulate Giant, but those will require amended NDAs. People attending the Big Ear Fest can simply initial the amendment to their original NDA. The NDA you filed previously covered the plants you purchased; you would need another one for the new releases. I can email you one if you wish.

Yes do send me one. I have the others on file here. I have to say the plants did well and I had a lot of people trying to buy them from me. I hope you have a plan to later patient them or release them.
I have been trying to find some good sources for releasing my plant as well. If I can find anyone that works well for me and does a good job I will let you know if your interested? I have been in contact with about 6 large nurseries. Hopefully one of them is willing to work with me on releasing some new plants. But I am taking my time to see which one is going to do the best job.

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

OK, Big Ear Fest fans! I'm thinking I'd like to see pics of each of you, seeing as how I have a pic of myself in my profile for all to see. I'd love to put a face together with the names. How about it? If you're shy about others seeing it, d-mail me!

That's my backyard (garden) in the back ground. Notice the absence of grass!

Thanks, Rj! Nice pic!

Ok, the rest of you, pony up!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Who's looking for grass? Or at the garden?! Nice, Rj ;) Guess if I'm shimmying up that palm, I can pony up! Need to go online a find a pic, now. Is it playboy.com or.org?

Now I'm old and not very pleasing to look at but here I am. I guess I could have posted one of me taken about 10 years ago when I was still smoking. I was a lot thinner then.

Now the little cute one is my baby (grand daughter) while I was visiting in July in Sugar Land.

Yes that is me in the red.

Lady in Red! Thanks, Linda! BTW, I don't see any "old" people here; IMHO those who have more years under their belts are mature. This means you, too! It takes maturity to look after cuties like your granddaughter.

I knew that pic couldn't have been taken in Kansas, unless global warming has advanced a lot more than anyone could have foreseen (what with all those palms visible in the background).

(Linda) Winfield, KS(Zone 6a)

It was in Sugar Land I think taken at the Cheese Cake Factory. We went in and had lunch and of course a piece of Cheese Cake we split 4 ways.

Mature yes I do like that saying so much better.
