PLACENCIA RITA, Hope that you are reading this! Check out http:// aroidiaresearch.org PS don't tell AuntB (ha ha) She might get a BIGGER truck ! Jerry
Jerry! ME?????? I'm going for the socializing and education.... (psssssssst-LariAnn, any steals on an acre yard with even a shack on it down there?) :oP It's 2Pugs (Linda) you need to be leary of! LOL We need a pic, Jerry... I wanna see.. please? Here's a new ear for me, not sure what it is, but I think like it more than Black Pearl... (I still love Black Pearl, don't get me wrong) Sometimes it has the most beautiful blue cast to it. It's getting dug, this weekend.
Aunt B,
Very nice EE there. Looks like it's just getting going; too bad you have to dig it.
Socializing and education? You must be planning on attending the (private) Big Ear Fest and Show. Do you like Margaritas? I hope you don't mind; I'll be one sheet to the wind before y'all arrive. Otherwise, I'll be doing so much talking and showing around that I won't have a chance for even a sip!

OOOOOOOOOOOO A BEF??? YES! - mmmmmmmmm, on the rocks with light salt, please! Liquid refreshments always makes my wallet open easier, lol. Date and time? I want to allow the maximum amount of time. Sounds like the event none of us should miss.... Maybe I do need to rent a truck ... and a driver! .... IAS is 2nd to Aroidia, LariAnn... (the "blue" ear IS just taking off, I'm going to try to grow it out some more under lights, and the ground could have been better prepped - that's for next spring or better yet this fall, IF there's time)
The Big Ear Fest and Show at Aroidia is in the idea stage right now; at first the thought was to have it around the same time as the IAS show, but on reflection, I'm now thinking I might want to have it in Spring 2008. Why? Well, down here, all the Ears will be vigorous and large at that time, no hurricane worries yet, and y'all have all summer long to grow the Ears you take back home with you! In Fall, you are getting ready to dig your Ears up, so your new Ears have to wait till the next Spring to do their thing in the ground, and the hurricane season is at the height, and so are worries down here.
I'm open to ideas; what do you all think about this?
I think it's a great idea. We say the exact same thing every year...that we wish the IAS show was in the Spring so we would have time to grow and enjoy our purchases. As it is, I keep everything potted up until next Spring and then I plant them out.
Wonderful idea! That is customer oriented thinking, LariAnn. I wondered how I was going to have time for both events. Keep talkin'...
LariAnn and AuntB, Lovers of EE.s and tropicals and MARGARITAS! Its sounds like a lot of us are going to Florida in '08! Sounds great count me in !!!! I agree with the spring show , sale. Buying plants in fall and cutting them up and brown bagging them home just to put them the greenhouse and just hoping that they will live till spring! If i ever learn how to send pictures over this new fancy computer i would send lots of pictures, but sorry gals i'am still waiting for eight track to come back, bet you don't know what that is do yea? SPRING TIME IN FLORIDA lets just do it ! Jerry
TO all AROIDERS, Talking about our passion for aroids and sipping a few margaritas in sunny south Florida. Thinking of that will get me thur the up coming cold (BURR) Texas winter.! Would really like to meet every one. Jerry
Okay everyone you thought you were going to sneak this thread by me. I don't think so. I am going to her web site now.
See you all later/
Oh, Linda! I should have d-mailed you! I get caught up in my watched threads and forget there are new ones starting! I admit I'm mature enough to know what an eight track is, Jerry. - CCR and Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Led Zepplin and the Beegee's, Rick Springfield ...... I just might still have them in that small storage area in my basement - ebay? (I need more room for winter plant storage, for SURE next winter) I will make Aroidia... may not have any space (or money) left for IAS... lol
Jerry are you that old?? An eight track.
I still remember my first 45 record.
Ok, folks, looks like it's a go! The First Annual Big Ear Fest and Show at Aroidia is tentatively scheduled for May 2008 and will run for two days (Saturday and Sunday), meaning you could come either day, not that there will be new stuff one day or the other. The date is still TBA but I suspect it will be either the second or third weekend in May.
Or, it could be Friday and Saturday, allowing time on Friday for a visit or two to "secret" caches of unusual aroids . . .
I know of at least one "secret" nursery that has tons of different Colocasias for those who want to get some; the nursery is just a few miles from me.
How does that sound? A show of hands?

Sounds perfect!!
Please, you gotta vote: Fri and Sat OR Sat and Sun.
Also AuntB, are you still applying for the position of PR person?
I would go for Fri. and Sat.
You bet. Shall I place a classified on DG? Post on all relative forums? Whadda ya have in mind? TV commercials on major networks and hgtv? I'm kind of a blabber mouth (sometimes;), shall I start making phone calls? (I have unlimited long distance) lol
I vote Friday & Sat, but not Mothers Day weekend - She's never flown and never will, so I can't bring her with me. I can pay off my graduating niece if it's that weekend in May.... maybe April would be better???? When is Easter?
AuntB you better get started with the advertising. Earlier the better, BUT maybe you better get a date for sure.
OH BOY!! right up my alley..Need to keep this in mind....just found this post...mmm...please keep all of us on here posted...yeppers..my kind of shopping here...
LariAnn,
Sounds like a wonderful idea. Id definately be down there this Spring.
It will be so wonderful seeing LariAnn's place, she's got some rarely seen gargantuan stuff! We like BIG, right?
Hey Jerry!! Look at this! She has an article in the October issue of Ornamental Outlook - arrow down a bit and down load a copy - We are going to be in AROID HEAVEN!
http://aroidiaresearch.org/
Fri and Sat for me
AUUT B, Today i started my " LARI ANN vacation fund " Walked 20 miles, picking up aluminum cans. Sold one gal. of blood at blood bank, any thing to get to florida! Jerry
LARIANN, Check out AROID - DIGEST vol 38 Issue 58. Message #7 from B. Williams. What is it and do you have any???? Are you doing any thing with giant leave variegated philo's. Jerry
Jerry,
I'm not familiar with AROID - DIGEST; what is it and where do I find it? Is it online?
RE big leaf variegated philos - I don't have any unless you consider types like P. gloriosum with the silver veins, variegated. The splotchy variegation (as in the white variegated A. macrorrhizos) doesn't breed true so I wouldn't work with them for that purpose, although the plants are very attractive.
One variegated plant I do have is a Zamia furfuracea (cycad) that has yellow striped chimeric variegation. I've tried to get some seed from it to see if any of them come up variegated. So far, all green, although a couple looked like all yellow and they died.
I couldn't find it thru google, Horticulture Digest? Jerry?? (man! now we hafta wait) Brian posted something on this forum about big variegated philo crosses he's working on... I'd sure like to see the article.... you who.... jerry.....
Jerry's probably laid up after that 20 mile hike and donating a gallon of blood . . .lol
Big Ear Fest date choices are May 16 & 17 or May 23 & 24, 2008. Which'll it be?
LariAnn
LariAnn, The Aroid- Digest is the I.A.S. website, newsletter for IAS members. Will send you d-email.
LariAnn, Are there any hotels nearby? How far are you from MIAMI airport? Any date is fine with me. Jerry
Jerry,
There are several hotels within about 1/2 mile; I am 35 to 40 minutes away from the Miami airport.
BTW, I just visited the IAS website, members area, and there is a Newsletter, but no Vol 38 or issue 58. The most current is Vol 27. There is no "aroid digest". So, guidance?
Jerry,
Got your email and found the reference; just sent you a reply. Thanks!
LariAnn, Sounds like your Royal Palm needs to have some of it's big variegated vines trimed back. Any chance for some out of town visters for the BIG EAR FEST to get any? ( hint hint ) note: AuntB is said to be a good tree climber, Is'nt that right AuntB!! jerry
Jerry,
I'd say there is a very good chance of getting something off my Royal Palm at the Big Ear Fest. If AuntB is climbing, I'll alert the media. This should go on YouTube, don't you think?
YouTube here comes AuntB from Kansas.
:o) oh sure, Linda.... I'd hope SOMEONE got that scene on film! lol Tree hugger is more like it... (I can BRING a tree climber...does that mean I get 2?) I remember my first 45 record and the 'record player' it played on! More than 5 stairs can be a climb for me these days... My excitement and anticipation of the Big Ear Fest this coming spring has not waned.. I've been battling white fly on my hibiscus' for over a month now, (may have them in check, but I've thought that many times) I'm busy getting my outside stuff ready to be moved to the basement (one more light to go!) and I am away from home for 11 hours M-F... working for my BIG Ear Fest trip in May 2008!
About this Vol. 38 Issue 58...?...
The Vol. 38 Issue 58 is correct but actually refers to the digests of the aroid-l listserver posts that are archived on the IAS website, not the IAS newsletter. I don't get the digests myself, but rather the individual emails. Each digest is like one big email that includes all the separate emails in it. It's not really called the AROID DIGEST; just that each "issue" is a digest of aroid-l posts. Hope this helps . . .
LariAnn , AuntB and all aroiders, To subscribe- go to INTERNATIONAL AROID SOCIETY home page, then click on AROID-L on the left side of screen. Then go down to ( To Subscribe ) then fill out the form. That should do it. Hopefully. Jerry
