A - Gorgeous! what an exciting thread to follow!!
Joanne
It doesn't get much better than that! Very striking! What a gorgeous blended pink throat. - Arlan
WOW...well worth waiting for.
Oh Well Done!!!!!
X
Spectacular!!!!
Don't forget to pollenate it!
X
Oh, that was the first thing i did, it only has one other bud. The first one fell off, it did not even grow very big. I put a note on the plant label... "Big Hairy Seed"... lol. I only had one seed.
WOW!! what a beauty.
A few questions Gourd to help get even better pictures and make Ron swoon in ecstacy.
1. Did you reduce the size of the picture before you uploaded it?
2. How much memory and what kind of processor do you have in your computer? (Go to Start Menu, click on Settings, Control Panel then System.).
3. How big is your hard drive and how much have you used of it? (Go to desktop or start menu, click on My Computer RIGHT click on C Drive).
4. What kind of program do you use to manipulate your picture?
X
Oh wow I have Mg envy Really bad Now!!! what a beautiful flower! And fragrant too
great job with the pics.
Thank you guys..
Now I know what it reminds me of, the mirabilis longiflora 4 O'clock flower, the way it has that long throat/tube.. of course I've only see a photo of that also.
X, thank you and I'll get answers to those questions.
1. Yes, I did down size to 850 pixels from 1280
2. Dell Dimension DIM 4550
Intel R
Pentium R 4 CPU 2.00 GHZ
1.99 GHZ, 256 MB of RAM
3. C Drive free space 36.7GB total 55.8 GB
4.FinePixViewer program that came with my camera.
I have to go feed my two dogs, they are pawing me as I type.. I'll come back later..
Thank you so much, again..
I have one question, - can I use a can of air to clean my camera or is it best to take it in to a camera shop for this? I think there is dust in there, the wind blows so much here and the dust is everywhere within hours sometimes.
A.
I just went outside and It is STILL OPEN... back outside for me for more photos..
A.
Gourd, this one http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=4035302 looks like a Georgia O'Keefe painting! Awesome bloom.
Thanks .. that 246mb of ram may pose a problem in working with large pictures .. if you could double that it would be great.
Anyway .. I'm not familiar with finepix viewer .. you obviously can resize a picture and I'm guessing you can crop pictures too. Can you increase or decrease brightness and contrast with the software?
Give me a day or so and I'll create a tutorial for you. For now, read up in the manual on picture quality and image size, get comfortable with adjusting the EV and read up on macro and start practicing macro. Take shots at 1 inch increments to get an idea of just how close you can get and have a clear crisp photo.

What a beauty, A!!! Definitely worth the wait!!!
:) Donna
beautiful!
Thank you X,
I went outside, then the phone rang... so I haven't done too much here.. my camera is outside, so I'm heading back out, storms are brewing here again.. more rain and wind..
A.
Definitely a pleasant surprise...
Large diameter and nice long tube...actually very large for a 'wild'-flower...the only other Ipomoea that comes to mind that is definitely larger in the wild state would I.alba...
The ribs are white but the primary folds are partially pigmented...later blooms may show more pigmentation...and it's possible that a more mature plant may produce larger blooms...
I'm wondering what the natural pollinators would be...since this species is native to Australia and there are no hummingbirds there...most likely large moths, bats and butterflies that could reach all the way down into the bottom of that long tube...maybe some small bees could navigate down in there also...
Still also wondering what the natural bloom time would be...and if this qualifies as a moonflower or what(?)...
A photo looking straight down into the tube to see what the inside and bottom of the tube looks like would definitely be valuable...
Great photos Antoinette...(!)

Ron
The excitement was too much. I had to scroll to the opening. LOL! Beautiful and I must say worth the wait.
I like the partially opened picture. Next year I am just going to have to make the more exotic morning glories a better place to germinate and grow. I have an overabundance of self seeded Orange Noah's and grandpa Ott's and milky ways, but no exotic ones.
Too bad the more desirable ones don't self seed as well.
Did you grow that one indoors under lighting?
I did look in the tube and tried to take a photo too, it is one LONG dark tube, I was thinking about the sphinx moth too. It is still on the pod, today. It closed completely about noon yesterday. If the second one gets any bigger, it will really take a long time to open up.
Windy, I started that one in Feb 2007 indoors, under lights... the very first bud fell off, boy was I sad.,
here it is with Pearly Gates next to it.. yesterday during the morning.

Gourd - The Pearly Gates is usually about 4 inches and looks small compared to the I.saintroanensis...
What is the diameter if you measured it and made sure you flattened out any slack in the bloom(?)...I know you measured it and it looks to be about 5 to 6 inches but I'm wondering if it may actually be larger...(?)
I have to see what is happening in the inner depths of the tube...
Pollinate the next one right away and before it closes snip off the anthers and send them to me...might have to split the flower in half to see what going on in there...
TTY,...
Ron
Ron, the tube is still there, do you want me to cut it open now and take a photo.. it still looks really healthy..
A.
Yes, the pearly gates was small.. compared to it, but it was a little behind it also, so that could account for the how much more smaller it made it seem.
I took photos looking down the tube, but, they came out really dark, you could not see too much into it. I'll upload all of the photos I took and send them to you via E-mail, there are too many to upload here.
A.
Well, I just came back from outside and the whole flower fell off, so, I put it into the frig.. let me know if you want me to cut it down the middle, don't know how long it will last, but it is better than leaving it outside.
A.
I would love to see it bisected so we can see the anthers and pistil.
Gourd - If you know how to extremely carefully remove the flower without doing any damage to the pistil then do it,but this may not be the flower to practice on if your not sure...the pollen tubes usually grow within the first couple hours after being pollinated but who knows for sure on the critter...I don't and it's definitely best not to damage the pistil but to allow it to remain until it completely dries up on it's own...
The stigma and anthers usually wind up getting scrunched up in the corolla top as it starts to shrivel up and fold inward...extreme care should be exercised in unfoling this half-dried out corolla matter...it can be done because I do it all the time, but it does take practice and sometimes the stigma does get broken even with care...
I'll leave it up to you to exercise your judgement ...you know if you have the dexterity or not...
The goal here would be to remove the corolla(capture the anthers) without breaking the pistil and show what the tube looks like split in two...
Maybe we should wait until we have enough seeds and flowers and can afford to lose a few to 'radical' surgery...
TTY,...
Ron
