Dimmer(AKA) Kim
Have Question on a out side flower?
Sounds like a Datura of some sort to me, except for the bad odor part (or were you talking about the seed rather than the flower? The flowers generally smell nice)

Kim
Dimmer,
Was the first picture on the plant file page, your flower? The white one, also known as Jimson Weed?
If so, they are hardy in our zone 5a. Is the pod brown and dried, and starting to split open? Or still green, with the "pricklies" on it still soft?
Sasha
Sasha
thats what it is brown dried and split sounds just like meLOLO
Kim
Dimmer,
That's PERFECT! (that the pod is brown and split-NOT YOU!) heehee.
Actually, there are ton's of seeds in each pod. You could experiment, and just sprinkle some seeds in a full sun area that will NOT be disturbed until even late May to mid-June. The seeds overwinter just great, but they don't sprout until the soil is very warm!
Then, you could also start a few indoors, just to be on the safe side.
If you want, I can find some pics of the seedlings to post for you.
One other thing, be careful transplanting. Take as much soil as you can, and keep watered well until they get established. after that, they are very forgiving. I have some that haven't been watered (except by very little rainfall) since late July, and they've never missed a beat. The jimpson weed, after all, is a weed-but, one we love! ha.
Sasha
Thanks So much Sasha I am going to try my luck both ways aand see what I come up with I do want to try some in the house maybe I should put some in my frezzer for a few weeks than start some in the house what do U think . Think It might work? I will plant tham in a pot than in a few weeks see if they will grow
Kim
Kim,
There's absolutely no need to store any of them in the freezer-although I understand how you might assume it's necessary.
Just store them in a dry place indoors. I know some seed sources recommend storing seeds in sealed containers in the frig, but, (knock on wood) I've never done it, nor found it necessary.
Why will you be planting some in a few weeks? Just as an experiment, to see if some will sprout? Do you have a flourescent light set up for plants, or a greenhouse?
For me, personally-I've found that using the wet paper towel to sprout the seeds, to be the quickest and most effective. Are you familiar with it?
I really applaud your curiosity and "need" to know attitude! Cheers.
:-) Sasha
I am into African Violets and houseplants so it will be and experimment I have growing lites so I thought that I wood trick them into thinking it was winter than is a few weeks see if I can have weeds by X-mas. I do know about the paper towel so This is good to know
But sometime today I have a few seed that I have gotten in trade and other things so I thinking of planting them today why it is till nice out
Kim
Well, Kim-
At the very least, it'll be a fun experiment!! wouldn't it be crazy if it bloomed before Christmas? heehee.
One cautionary note(just in case you're not aware of it).
ALL parts of the datura are poisonous. Just make sure no children or pets can get near it. Forgive me if I sound condescending, that is not my intent. :-)
I hope you'll post pics of your plants as they progress!
Sasha
I will keep it posted and I live by myself so I just have to be the one not too eat it ( Only if I am starving) lolo thank you for all the information
Kim
glad to help.
Hope we see you around more often. FYI, AV and Houseplant Forums, here on DG-are very active!!
TTYL,
Sasha
