I'm very new here and need some info. I am wanting to take some cuttings and root them over the winter, from some existing shrubs. I am wondering if instead of purchasing a cold frame, if I can convert an old deep freeze into a cold frame by replacing the lid with a glass window-mounted at an angle. Has anyone ever tried this and do you all think it would work? Any input or advice would be great. I've never had a cold frame or taken root cuttings before but want to try it, as I've accumulated a lot of plants and am planning to do some new beds this next spring.
Thanks,

cold frame question
sandybeaches:
the deep freeze might give you some drainage problems. The cuttings need to be in a frost free place with good air circulation and perfect drainage. The should also be protected from strong sun.
You can make a makeshift cold frame by stretching two layers of 6 mil plastic over a pvc framework. Secure the bottom with tent stakes. the containers should be elevated so there is no chance they will be spending time soaking in water.
I don't know how cold your winters get, but I am in south Texas in zone 9a and we still need to use heating mats to propagate in the winter ......................
Go to ' diynetwork.com'
Type in 'build a cold frame'
All the instructions are there. Good luck, Smokey
Thanks for all the input! I'm checking out diynet now!
Sounds like I'll have to haul off my old freezer now!
Thanks again,

some people use them for worm bins.
