I apparently hae a Weigela florida 'Java Red' that came with the house we just purchaed. Can anyone give me advice on pruning? Shoukd it be done. If so, what time of year. Does it only flower on the old wood? I don't know much about gardening and could use some guidance.
Weigela florida 'Java Red' Care question
I'll preface this by saying I've never grown a Weigela...but in general, most things that are blooming this time of year bloom on new wood, so I would prune in early spring just before it breaks dormancy. You don't necessarily have to prune it every year though, if it has a nice shape and isn't too dense or overgrown you can leave it alone.
Not sure about your zone, but for here weigela normally have some winter dieback so I prune mine after they start to leaf out and you can prune out the dead tips and the same time.
