I need help to try to save my cannas. My neighbor thinks it grasshoppers eating my cannas. Does anyone know if this is correct and if so, how do I get rid of the grasshoppers?
Thanks for any input.
What is eating my cannas?
That would be caused by one of the the Canna Leafrollers, or both:

They do the same to mine every year.....here's a pic:
The Brazilian Skipper moth is so cute I just let them do their thing, but they sure do make a mess of the cannas.
Thanks so much! I guess I will just cut off all of the damaged leaves and hope for the best.
Now, if I could also get rid of the squirrels who plant all of the pecans in my flower beds that produce those unwanted pecans trees, I would be a happy camper! This is a constant battle and causes me much more stress than any bug! The pecan trees LOVE the weed killer I spray on them. They turn brown and look dead, BUT they come back with a vengence. Look at the problem I have now with a pecan tree taking over my Yaupon Holly tree. Both trees will have to be dug up, and the Yaupon Holly will have to be replanted. I have been fighting this particular pecan tree for the 14 years I have lived here. Several people have tried to kill it, but it keeps coming back. I guess because the root is so far down there is no way to get rid of it.
I guess I should have started a new post, but does anyone have any suggestions?
Let it grow there. Enjoy its presence and take comfort in not being forced to control what happens in that area.
Or get some dynamite.
:)
P.s. on topic: Those leaf rollers annihilated my cannas in no time. They eat like crazy! They will eat two parallel strips in the leaf and then roll the area in between those spaces over itself. Then it just sit and eat.
You can see right through these guys! They are transparent almost.
Good luck. I just hope that when I plant my cannas in the ground for next season they will grow faster than the worms. Same for my Passiflora 'Incense' (incarnata x cinnicata)
Thanks for your advice! I may have to opt for the dynamite!
Are you saying you replant your cannas every year? I just leave them in the ground, and they always come back even after a freeze. I would think you could leave them in ground in Florida. This is the first year I have had problems with worms.
I will have to look up Passiflora 'Incense" since I don't know what it is.

I dont know about your cannas but everything eats mine. I find spraying with dipel (bt) every so often helps. I spray with a product containing spinosad occasionally as it kills worms and grasshoppers but spinosad while organic is pretty toxic to beneficial icscects as well so I use it sparingly and especially dont spray the blooms if you have troubles with grasshoppers try nolo bait early in the spring when you start to notice lots of little tiny grasshoppers it works pretty well.
