sweet shrub - poison to cats/dogs?

Asheville, NC

I am searching for medium height shrubs to grow under tall oaks, sycamores, and a few dogwoods that will serve also as a privacy barrier. I like the idea of sweetshrub (carolina allspice) but it is poisonous to livestock. I don't have livestock but there are neighborhood dogs and cats that use this strip of woods. Would the sweetshrub be poisonous to them if they just walk through it? Hopefully they would not chew on it! I will need a dozen or so shrubs. Final height needs to be 6 to 10 feet if anyone has other suggestions. Thanks.

I don't think it'll hurt them unless they eat it.

Cant add anything further than what Ecrane has already said, I would imagine as this is a shrub or small tree, then the likelyhood of animals eating the plant is very, very low indeed, unless it berries or has nuts that other animals will eat, wild animals are usually more savy than us and know what is poisonous to them but as you say, domestic animals are like us in as much as they will try new things but, I dont think you will have much to worry about, it is really refreshing to hear someone bothering about animals if they dont belong to them, good for you, you should get your rewards in some way for you kind thoughts, just know to say to anyone who said their dog/cat has become sick in your walking area so you can sugest they may have licked their coats or nibbles the shrubs so they can inform the vet if they have to go that far for help, good luck.
