I would like to start adding bamboo to the many plants I already have in my garden. I have been told that they can be invasive if not tamed. Does anyone know of any books or reading material that I can obtain so that I may do this right when it comes to planting these beautiful plants. I don't think my neighbor wishes to experience the plants I choose to grow. They just want to visit. Thanks and have a great DG day!
bamboo as a garden friend
The most important thing is to get a clumping bamboo instead of a running bamboo. The running ones are the ones that cause problems unless you want to go to the extra trouble of installing root barriers and things like that, so I'd definitely recommend finding some clumpers instead. Beyond that, you'll also want to make sure you buy ones that are hardy in your zone, some of them are more tropical. I'm not sure where in WA you are, I know some parts are zone 8-ish and reasonably warm in the winter, but other parts are more like zone 5 so if you're in that part you'll have to be more careful about checking for hardiness.
Hop on over to the Grass and Bamboo Forum. They'll have all the answers for you.

Yes, definitely--I didn't realize you were a subscriber so I didn't suggest that initially, but since you are that's definitely the best place to get the answers you need.
