My first triple seedling

Beautiful!! Good for you!!

Many thanks, Sequee and ladyblue. This plant has been fun to watch and it continues to put out more blooms.

Tussee

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Ha! It's more of a thanks to you! I'm new to brugs and I'd have to say that yours is one of the finest I've ever seen!

After 3 years of trying I finally have my first blooms - and I have to confess to dashing out the back door to get a sniff at almost every commercial break. I can hardly believe they are so intoxicating, and so short lived. I want to suck up enough of the scent to last me until next year!!!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Just have to show you today's just opened blooms. She consistently gives non-deformed triples, and does her own thing about color. Tomorrow, she will be a deeper orange, or at least that is how she has done in the past. :) Keeps me guessing...

That is gorgeous! So very pretty! Put me on the list for a cutting when you get ready to prune! Just lovely!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Here's the other new bloom today. There is a faint hint of color on the bottom skirt and the color will be there in the morning.

OMG Tussee - so nice!

Marysville, WA(Zone 8a)

Hello Tussee. :) Congratulations on getting your seedling to bloom!
I'm afraid I have a little bad news though. Please, please forgive me, I don't like being the sourpuss that rains on the parade, but I love brugs, so I want to clear up a misconception that has been repeated here a couple times.
I truly am sorry, but these flowers are fully deformed. Most reputable brug breeders would cull this one. I apologize again for saying so, but I'll explain:
First, and foremost, the outter skirt is considerably smaller than the others. This is the result of a genetic mutation where the outter skirt is confused as to whether it is a calyx or a corolla tube, and you end up getting a little of both mixed in.
Second, the flower surface is rumpled and misshappen, unlike it's parents which have larger smooth areas on the surface.
Third, the flower shape is unbalanced, with large areas (not just the tendrils) pointing in different directions.
Again I'm sorry for saying this. I I would strongly encourage you to keep trying with this cross again now that we've seen a hint as to what is possible. Kind regards and good growing.

Thank you, Tom, for your candid comments that I believe you sent in ernest to help me better understand my seedling. I have never aspired to be a "reputable brug. breeder"; I am a complete newbie with brugs., have no inclination or need to sell plants, and I'm having a good time with this plant in my garden. However, I do know from the many named and sold brugs., from "reputable brug. breeders", that I have had to throw away because of gross deformities, that my plant is a keeper for me. I have wasted hundreds of dollars buying worthless brugs. that were named and registered.

Tussee

Marysville, WA(Zone 8a)

I understand Tussee. :)
It sounds like maybe your brug breeders were not really the reputable ones after all. The trouble is, as you now know from experience, that someone can almost always get one oddball picture from a deformed brug that looks just glorious. Then normal people like you and I spend the money (and time!) on it, only to be bitterly dissappointed. This is the only reason I think it's necessary to speak up on occasion and why I think culling is important. :^)

Tusse, it is a beautiful flower. I enjoy seeing it in your garden, as do many others, and I know that you enjoy doing it! And, that is all that matters!

Jeanne

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

HOLY MOLY! What a fantastic girl with a mind of her own. Just as it should be!

She's so different. I LOVE different! Nice job Tussee! ♥

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Thank you, Jeanne, for the morale support. The plant does please me, and being this is its first year to bloom, only time will tell its fate. Who knows, it may be a single white next year. Lol

Tussee

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Teresa, if I knew how to send you a heart, I would send two! Live, laugh, and love, as though today was your last.

Tussee

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

Tussee, regarding your last sentence.... do you know something that I don't??? *kidding*

While depressing the ALT key, press 3 on your keypad. I learned this from wonderful people at DG's! ♥

Gilroy (Sunset Z14), CA(Zone 9a)

I can't possibly top "Holy Crud Balls" (I think that will soon become a "family phrase" in our house) but I wish I could.

I don't often visit the brug forum because it causes severe envy attacks. These make me go outside to my plants that freeze to the ground and just start to get buds about the time the frosts hit again and yell at them. Clearly I need to revisit my strategy. But I digress.....

This baby is just absolutely drop-dead GAWJUS!!!!! What a thrill it must be to be the "mom"!!!!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

GAWJUS, is pretty good, imapigeon. Holy Crud Balls did open my eyes a bit, but that helped me to see better. :)

Teresa, tried to give you and imapigeon some hearts but it does not work on my computer.

Tussee

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

Awww common... it works. Press on the alt key....and while it's depressed, press the #3 on your number keypad. ♥

Imapigeon, we should start our own country with our own language. Which country should we buy up?

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

It does not work on my computer either....

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

This brug is so beautiful, I think of it when I'm outside with mine. I love some of my brugs so much, it's almost like having company! I hope she gives you that same wonderful warmth. ♥

It doesn't work on my computer either, so I have to type
& # 9829;
with no spaces.

Gilroy (Sunset Z14), CA(Zone 9a)

The symbols may be dependent on what fonts are loaded on your confuser, and on what keyboard you have. When I press "alt 3", mine just scolds me. Typical.

Teresa, this "buying a country and starting our own language" sounds like an interesting project!

Tussee, have you thought of a name for your new seedling? "Creamsicle", maybe?

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

Tussee, can you please post your address here... and perhaps let us know when you'll be out of town for a couple of days?

*snicker*

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

I would not want you to come when I wasn't here, Teresa. Meeting you in person would be a treat, and you could have a cutting of anything I have. Course, if you want the entire plant, you will need to come when I'm gone, lol.

My address is:

Tussee

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Okay, I tried the Alt 3 thing and it didn't work using the number pad or above the letters... weird, it works on my mac at work, but not on my son's PC... hmmmm
Tussie, I'm with you, I think it's beautiful and unique. I grow for my pleasure and enjoyment and to share when I can, not money, too.

Victoria, BC(Zone 8a)

I'm looking at mapquest and can't seem to locate No Way Hose' in Jupiter, Florida!

This mapquest isn't all that great afterall ! ☼

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Tussee -

I've just booked my flight and I'm renting a uhaul when I get there! ;)

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

You gals are too much! LOL! So funny!! I now have a few brugs myself now, so I will be so exilerated when they bloom! These were given to me, they are not my seedlings, but I will treasure them and love them just the same. And then, maybe, someday, I can cross them, and get a beautiful "genetic mutation" (per Tom) like yours Tusse! LOL

OOOOOOH he made me so mad! Just lucky that I have learned to bite my tongue and stay quiet. I used to not be tactfull whatsever or there is no telling what I have might said! My DS said, "Well beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and now we can't help that you sir, are blind, now can we?" He's my kid!

I love your beautiful new brug! It is gorgeous Tusse! I hope to have one someday also!

Marysville, WA(Zone 8a)

Texasgal I really am very, very sorry I made you so mad. I tried to say something that is important as kindly as I could. I'm genuinly sorry I didn't do better. Couldn't you possibly try to look at it from a another's viewpoint to see what it is I think is so important?
It may seem to you like my post was unkind, but please, please understand that is what it was all about: kindness. Consider what Tussee said about buying hundreds of dollars of worthless brugs. Not just the money, but imagine all the time & effort she must have put into them, and try to empathize with the dissapointment of being let down time and again like that.

Why?

There is a huge problem in the brug world right now with people selling deformed brugs using the one glorious picture that is possible with any plant really. There are sooooooo many people sadly dissapointed.
But what does just growing it and enjoying it in your garden have anything to do with that? Tussee sounds like a kind and generous person. I can't imagine her not sharing some cuttings with friends, wouldn't you? She wouldn't sell it, and maybe not her friends, but very soon it will get to someone who will put it on Ebay for $50 using something like the first pic in this thread. When the buyers are consistenly getting blooms like in the 6th pic or worse, they will be very dissapointed. Even if some people like most of these pictures, yes, I can assure you from experience this brug will dissapoint many people.
Please try to look outside the mindset that "I like it and that's all that matters", because that's just not true. Kindness matters.
I don't say these things because I want to be some haughty elitist, or a holier-than-thou critic. Please try to see why there are many people that think it is really the kind thing to cull deformed brugs and devote that time and space to keep trying for something similar that is not deformed.
I hope you take this in the humble spirit it is offered.
- Tom

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

tomthumb, I do understand where you are coming from. But, there are people, like myself, and others who love flowers, no matter what. It's like being able to think outside of the box. As individuals we are all different, yet each one of us are loved by our Creator. We are made in His image. As the Creator, He chose to have variety. Yes there are genetic mutations, and Thank God for them, or what a boring world we would have.

Many of us just want pretty flowers for our gardens. And as I said above, beauty is in the eye of the beholder! I love that brug. To me it is unique, one of a kind, special. Yes cuttings may get passed around. I am sure Tusse will be considerate in who she passes it along to.

I am sorry that you would consider it for culling. That is certainly your opinion, and you are certainly entitled to it, however, I believe that you should be more considerate of other's peoples' feelings, and not so critical and untactfull.

Here Tusse was so excited about having her seedling bloom, and you basically could not resist to "steal her joy" with your uprighteous, holier than thou opinion.
Everything you said may be true. I am not a judge of brugs by any means, by I definately think that it was totally uncalled for.

She is not going to be a breeder, or register it. It is her own private, personal accomplishment that she should have every right to be proud of and enjoy. There are many of us who share her joy and delight in it's uniqueness. I am sorry that you are not one of them.

I hope that in the future you can be more open minded and less critical. You are entitled to your opinion. There is a time and place for everything (Ecclesiastics 3) and this was not the time nor place for comments like that.

I hope that you will receive this message in the kind and thoughtful way that it is intended. Learn a little grace and mercy. I personnally think that you owe Tusse an apology for being so rude. Whether or not you apologize is up to you.

Grace goes along ways. If it were not for Grace, none of us would be acceptable in our Creator's eyes. We'd all be culled and thrown into the pits of He double L.
I thank the Good Lord for my salvation, and being able to be tolerant when things may be less than "perfect". I am a redeemed perfectionist myself. I hope you can join that club someday as well.

Jeanne

Marysville, WA(Zone 8a)

Jeanne thank you for your advice. I apologize again for upsetting you. I'll try and address your points as delicately as I can.
When you say that you are not a judge of brugs by any means, do you think, are your sure, that I do not have the experience to say that many people will be sorely dissapointed because of the difference between pic 1 and real life in pic 6? Is one person's joy worth more than many people's sadness? Is it really thinking outside the box if you don't put yourself in the place of those people who will be dissapointed in the future? Does kindness to them not matter?
Think why I'm doing this. I may not be very smart, but at least I knew for sure ahead of time the fangs would come out against me like this. I really dreaded doing it, but I honestly think it's the kind thing to do. Even if you think I'm a moron and don't know a thing about brugs, you should pity my misguided stupidity, not hate me for trying to be kind to the future buyers.
It's interesting you brought up the Creator. You know it's actually a helpful proof against evolution (one of many) that the Creator set up both plants and animals so that genetic mutations are meant to die. They may look nice to someone, but they have reduced viability, otherwise the evolution theory would be true. I'm sorry, that's the way he made it.
You might also consider that it may seem a little odd to engage in name calling ("critical, untactfull, uprighteous, holier than thou, rude") and then immediately lecture me (with scripture) on grace and manners.
Kind regards.
- Tom

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Tom, it's very clear that we have a variance in opinion....that won't be settled here or elsewhere. I have no hatred for you or anyone else. I was hoping that you would be able to see that not everything has to fit one pattern. People are all different, it should only be right that flowers be given the same opportunity.

What pleases you is obviously different from what pleases others. Again, you are entitled to your opinion, as I am entitled to mine.

I think the only thing here is to agree that we disagree. Can we agree on that?

I hope you have a very nice weekend!

Marysville, WA(Zone 8a)

You too. :)

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Tusse, there are many of us who love your brug and would love to see any pictures you have, of this one, or any others! God bless you!

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Yeah, I'm wanting a cutting, too!!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I just want to say I respect Tom's opinion, as I respect everyone's here. I don't believe his comments were meant in a hurtful way. I've bought seeds off ebay, I've since grown them out, multiple years, lost the original tags I BELIEVED to be the seed crosses I purchased and I've traded their cuttings to fellow dg'ers, unnamed, and unsure of the cross, JUST because they are pretty.. did they use my plants dishonestly? I don't know. I've also seen Harrenhouser (sp) the double dark orange one, go for almost $100.00 on ebay, only for the buyer to be disappointed after 3 years of no blooms... This plant is known for being hard to bloom, or at least there is discussion about it available on the web....We need to do research before we hit the bid button and IF it seems to good to be true, it probably is. . I don't think Tussie is trying to profit in anyway from her cross...it is pretty and I hope you continue to post pics, Tussie.
The biggest majority of us on DG grow for enjoyment .. we share our beauties and oddities because it's fun... Her cuttings are given in mutual admiration for the plant (deformed or not) and she can only hope it is accepted and grown in the same manner. If there are people on this thread, getting a cutting from Tussie, to profit on ebay, then THEY will have to bear that weight themselves, on their personal journey through life on earth and beyond, depending on their private beliefs.. We have to be cautious when purchasing anything on ebay, but I hope we don't have to stop trading plants on this forum, to enjoy in our own backyards...
I wasn't going to post a reply, but it's just on my mind, and I can't shake it, AND I want to see more pics of your bloom, Tussie. -B

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Sweetheart ,

I appreciate your excitement , BTDT , I kept that gosh awful HG and PinkPerfektion for 3 years that noone can imagine why in the heck it was registered in the first place and finally tossed them.

When experienced breeders have one that is not worthy of propagating but have a personal attachment to it ............... we keep it in our own private collection.

Since you are fairly new at brugs you need to know that concientious growers keep them in their own back yard for personal enjoyment but NEVER share cuttings .

Who knows what hands it will fall into on down the line as it gets passed on over and over ?

Some money grabbing thoughtless person surely will slap a name on it and further contaminate our already woefully screwed up Brugmansia gene-pool.

It is your own private pleasure , I speak from my own experience.

If you have any other pod siblings watch them closely and maybe find one that has all the good points about this one but blooms smooth and symmetric every time.

You made a big jump with this cross , so now it is onward and upward.

Keep her close and enjoy her (((♥)))

Well said, AuntB!!

Tussee, please come back and post pics!
