Best Way to Overwinter Potted Perennial Plants

Yonkers, NY

HELP....Zone 6...What is a good way to overwinter potted perennials ?

If you heel the pots into the ground how far buried must they be ?

The larger pots how can they be protected ?

Can you bring them into a shed or garage?
You could always wrap straw around them, or build a cage with cloth. Important though that the material doesn't touch the plant. Uncover in the day if possible.
Some plants need to be cut back and others go dormant.
What plants are they?

Thanks for your reply Mrs-Collahey are butterfly bush (Buddelia), Hostas,Clematis, coneflowers.
I had them in 10-12 inch patio pots on the patio where I have been nurting small plants all season.

Now I would like to overwinter but not lose them to the cold.

All your plant other than the Clematis will loose All the foliage and stems so they can be wrapped up in their pots for the winter, either get hold of a large plastic crate from the stores, like the ones you see in the bakery delivery that has 2 handles or similar, put some chopped up polystyrene packaging into the bottom, add you pots and then pack the polystyrene around the pots to insulate them, add some more over the top of the pots if you think the top soil will freeze and then cover this with some form of cloth like the lightweight fleece from the garden store, the Clematis should be dealt with in the same way but, wrap some of the fleece around the shortened stems to insulate them and add the Clematis to the other pots, you can then leave them outside all winter, do remember to check them every so often to make sure they are not going moldy, but the polostyrene should allow them to breath, another way is to wrap as before with sacking to insulate the pots, in sunny days remove the sacking as it will become wet from thaw and rain.
Hope this gives you some ideas as you cant bring your plants indoors, also worth mentioning, next spring, get them into fresh new compost with general feed added as the pots are rather small to allow the roots to grow healthy. Good luck. WeeNel.
