Accidental Dracanea!

Manila, Philippines

Our neighbor recently thrashed her large Corn Plant (Dracaena) due to water piping issues, and I snagged one of the stalks since I was trying to make a little wooden sign (uhm.. DOG BITES!...hehehe). After two weeks of having my little sign just lying around, I decided to raise it. I really just poked it into the soil - no digging, no preparation. And it grew! Now it has 3 shoots coming out of its sides, ignoring the 2 nails I drove into it.

I'd like to bring this in! I heard they could withstand low light. Should I bring the soil around it too? Or do I prepare some mulching/ rich soil/ etc? No experience here with Dracaneas, any advice would helpI think it's still a baby though, but I don't want my warning sign to grow all 'leafy, gentle and kind' looking! ;-)

Hi Jieroque: Welcome to Dave's Garden!

Here's a link to Plant Files on the Corn Plant: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/54287/

Apparently they can be grown in many different lighting situations from full sun to full shade. I would use a regular potting soil but I think it would be okay to include a bit of the soil it's already growing in with the fresh soil. If it is inside I would be careful not to overwater it, and they like humidity so I think you will find it helps to mist it regularly.

Thanks so much Plantladylin!

It has FIVE shoots now, and yes, I removed the dog sign. I'll post the pic in this thread once I get my camera back from my housemate.

Hate my cat though. Just when I was about to dig it up, I discovered some catpoop neatly hidden beside it.
