missing everybody

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Where did everyone go?

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

I've been lurking and wondering the same thing. lol.

San Antonio, TX

Look in the green house, or the basement, or even the garage.....I've read so many posting of people getting ready for winter and moving plants and stuff. I myself did a lot of mulching today and rearranging in the greenhouses to see what Im gonna put where. Give them time. They will surface.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Hi all! I'm here, for the moment...just saying Hi though! Christi - just sent you a d-mail. More later! Good vibes and happy thoughts to all!

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

Been off line for a couple of days. One of the guys twisted his ankle but came into work. By lunch time his whole leg was swollen with red streaks all the way up - to cut a long story short, he has come down with a horrible infection and has to go daily to the hospital for iv antibiotics, so I have been filling in for him. We are all very concerned as there is a possibility he will have to loose the leg if there is no response to the medicine. Infections are beginning to becoming immune to antibiotics.......

Warmest Aloha to all....

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I know first hand about the antibiotics not working, when I had my 5 by-pass,couple years back, they had to take veins from 5 places on my legs, and one of the places got infected, right under my right knee,it swelled up like a basketball, and the 500mg antib.they gave me,I was taking 3 times a day did nothing,I just took both hands around the knee and squeezed and pushed the infection out at the incision,I had to do this about every other hour, took about 4 days, but it got better.
Still working on my new greenhouse, things going slow, when your working by yourself.
Hope to finish it next week end!

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Hi Lou, HI Pepper, HI Shari

So this is where you guys hang out when your not being decadent with recipes :-)

Just happened upon this from my homepage.

Tropicman I am trying to get ideas for a greenhouse would love to see pics.

Cringing about the leg infections..........eeewww

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

jada, go to the postings of Underwater Gardening.....start at the first. The pictures are to die for. Am really, really missing this thread. As Anaid says.....guess we are busy putting the garden to bed....I know I am. Also Tropicman has an unbelievable garden in the middle of Kansas. Both of these threads are worth looking at several times. Welcome to the Islands.

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

Aloha Jada, and welcome!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Good Monday morning everyone. I am just plain addicted to "talking" with you. It is beautiful here today....still hot....but not too windy so works out well for replanting.

Later....Christi Lou

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

Good morning to you, Christi - what are you going to be replanting? I expect you can grow a winter garden in your area with all the thing that don't like the heat such as pansies?

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Jen, I usually pass up the pansies. IMO, we have such a light snap of winter that they tend to get in my way. I am always fussing around with the beds and have lots of perrenials that I don't want anything on top of them. Changing the peonie, and hydrangeas....both in areas not suitable. already moved the daylilies. the hoja santa has 4 pups and trying decide just where they need to go. put a bears breeches in a terrible spot....already moved it....found more roots and have moved them. cutting back and trying to ready about 25 very large pots to move inside. Moved several datura seedlings that had gotten to about 12-18 inches. and more and more and more

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

Wow Christi, that's some days work!

Not much going on at work today so I am catching up on all the postings.....

Good news - the fella with the very bad leg is starting to respond to the antibiotics and is doing much better.

Catch you all later...

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Jenny, such good news! When I read about him on the other thread...(and oooh owwww, what Don went through), I was just cringing. Poor guy! Glad to hear its getting better!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Glad to hear he is better......infections are nothing to be blasse about.

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Jada.I'll take some pics this weekend.
I went with the hog panels,3ft x 16ft,attached 2 together, with about a foot overlapped, and for the bottom ,went with 2,2x10 treated lumber, took screws and washers and attached the hog panels to the lumber,6 panels gives you about a 10x10 greenhouse, one end going in front of the gargae door, the other end using the clear greenhouse poly tuf panels you get at Lowes.and a 3ft storm door .
For the cover, first goes down a solar pool cover with the air bubbles then a greenhouse plastic 6 mil, over that.
Not sure how it will work, but seems like a good idea!!!

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Now I want a list of the vitamins you take! And any other supplements! You have more energy than any six people I know all put together! Including my granddaughter!!! Wowzers Don, you are my hero!

Hi all ....sorry ....I come and go because of the storms...lost the computer for many hours on and off......very high winds causing trees to come down on power lines....which in turn causes black outs!.....so if I am missing here and there ....you will know.....not my choice.Golly TM and the poor fellow with the infection.....awful!!!!
I agree with Shari TM.... what the heck do you eat that gives you all that stamina?.....or is it just sheer guts and determination to have your tropical dream no matter what! (or is it both?)

I'm just getting back here for a minute. Tropicman that looks just like what I need. I didnt want to tear down the shed but something extending from it would work great! Thanks for the idea. Cant wait to see the blooms.

Lou... havent had time to read the back threads yet but I will!

chrissy..sorry about the blackouts. Hope the winds die down :-(

Hi Shari and everybody else!

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Hiya Joyce! Slow down girl!

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

You go girl! I don't think you need the supplements! Now we know TM's secret!

Hey TM my passionfruit alata is up to the second floor balcony and it is only 2 weeks into Spring.....I love it!.....smells divine.

Hey I think they have all rudhed off to get some vitamins! ha ha ha

Oh I hate it when I hit the wrong button ...."rushed" ha ha ha

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Mine have not flowered all summer, but the shorter days and cooler nights must have set it into the flower mode,Chrissy does yours fruit???

Yes ....it does but it sets fruit fairly late towards the end of Summer....even though it flowers all through the warm weather....I was told they set better if there is more than one vine...but I remember reading about them only having viable pollen for just a few hours and only when a certain amount of moisture is in the air.In a warmish winter they have gone on to continue fruiting.....I don't really get excited about the fruit although large it is a much thicker rind and therefore not more inside than a good eating black one ...but having said that you can make a jam from the rinds....they say...haven't tried myself....I just love the vine...the flower so pretty and the wonderful scent!.I hope you get your fruit.:)

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

As usual OT.....I have it in my mind that the plant is "d a t u r a" .....don't know where that came from......apparently it is "d u r a n t a"...is this the same thing or have I invented a word (wouldn't be the first time)

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

I wish I could grow those vines in my area. Even my MG's have trouble climbing.

Lou
I got some datura seeds in the mail by mistake and planted them. They were very small, but did flower, looked like a small brug. Then drought came and they disappeared. Pretty thou.

Love OJ but have developed acid reflux in my old age (50) and cant tolerate it anymore. I now drink papaya juice which is supposed to be good for the stomach and its good too.

shari
Sorry for the "driveby" post the other day but have been busy taking three writing courses (whew, what was I thinking) and trying to get Dave's stuff in and also we have a fairy tale going on in another forum thats for everybody if anybody wants to contribute. skip to the bottom to read the story.

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/742259/

Love your plumerias shari, I definitely have zone envy.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Christi, I always say datura when I mean duranta - I'm starting to stutter whenever I think about the plant. I just bought a duranta - got it for $5 at Wallyworld. There were a few flowers left and I just love them - I've wanted one for a couple of years - looking forward to next year. It's called Sweet Memories - lavender blue flowers with a white outline. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/45725/

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

So a they are two different plants. I have been using the word Datura for the many kinds of moonflowers..all of a sudden began to see the word Duranta and thought I had made something up. I have Datura and have enjoyed it for quite a long time. Just saw a Duranta at HD last week.....couldn't find a tag but have id' from your pictures. Great! Learn something new everyday. There are no details on the plantfiles....will this winter over outside? I am NOT buying anything else to bring inside this house.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

This web site shows the Duranta as hardy to 25 degrees http://www.kartuz.com/pc/51455/7RFPG1/Duranta+erecta+Sweet+Memories.html

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Looks like I am off to HD.

That is beautiful I have the duranta geisha girl ...very similar but with more white edging on it....mine is about 10 ft tall most people lollypop them....but I let it have it's own way....it is a lovely big shrub...or maybe a small tree.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Joyce, how very fun! The story had me completely enthralled...just as the men were with the dancing girls! I was sort of startled when your last enstallment ended....back to reality with a jerk....whoosh. I will be watching for the rest.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi folks! I just found this thread this morning. Good to see you folks, now that I know where you are hiding! HAHAHA

I have 2 Durantas. One is white and the other is lighter blue than the sweet memories. I bought mine at the end of season last year, overwintered them on the deck covered in plastic. Then I put them in the ground in the spring. Randy (rjuddharrison) told me earlier this year that these plants love to be in pots. They grow well, but don't bloom very well if they are planted in the ground. Sure enough, I dug mine up and planted them into pots and they went wild blooming on me. The blue one is bigger than the white one. Both have golden berries on them with a few sparse blooms left. Both of these are butterfly magnets.

LouC, the Datura is also known as devil's trumpet (we used to think they were angel's trumpets until we joined Dave's and found out otherwise). I got seeds from my sister and planted them. They are blooming now.
