advice on getting a big plant that won't see much light

Los Angeles, CA

Hello!

I want to get a plant to fill up the corner of my bedroom. There is one window that is pretty big (5' x 6') thing is I usually leave my curtains drawn and that side of the building does not receive much light.

Is there any type of plant that gets pretty big that doesn't really need a lot of light? Or should I just figure something else out to stick in my room? :)

Thank you for any advice!

How dark is it? Can you read in the amount of light in there easily? Maybe a large Chinese Evergreen or Shefflera. A large philodendron maybe.

I think I have the same situation as you. I have a South facing 6ft x 6ft window, covered with a lot of layers of bead curtains, and a murky dark corner (literally, because I have a bamboo divider that covers 1/4 of the room).

I fixed it with a Sanseviera - Snake Plant that I placed in a tall, terracotta vase. It looks lovely and exotic and to finish it off, I placed a hanging beach cloth lantern above it that I light only at night. The vase is 1.5ft high, and the plant is 3 feet high.

It's been there for two months now, and it's growing even more! I have two new shoots now. It's really clumped and it looks like 'intertwining flames'! I water it twice a week with nothing but pure rainwater (lotsa rain in my place), and every sunday I let it have a day-off in the sun. There are some minor adjustments with what I get from online advice since I live in a tropical country, but I bet that this plant is for you.

Ordinary houseplant for some, but with the right treatment, and a beautiful vase, it could be stunning! Try one!

I also was going to suggest Sanseviera (also called Mother- in-Law's Tongue). They don't get real tall, but they still look good on the floor, or you could put them on a pedestal. Jieroque has a good idea; sounds pretty. One thing I would caution you is to not overwater; they will rot. They are better left on the dry side and require very little care.

Sanseviera is a great plant for Low Light situations! Here's the link to Plant Files so you can read about it: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/431

Most people think of Palm Trees needing full sun but the Parlor Palm does very well in low light. I have two inside my house and they are in a room that does not get much light - just two small windows. They do really well. Another plant good for low light is Peace Lily, there are some that get very large and some that are petite in size. Here's info on a large one: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/65570/
