I planted 2 types of zinnia not that long ago, one is growing great, the other isn't, any ideas?
'Purple prince'
Zinnia
Hi Desperado25. I am new to gardening as well. I purchased a mixed pot of Zinnias from Lowes, and it had both orange and pink flowers. I seperated them when I replanted them under my birdbath. The orange ones looked horrible, dry and very stiff. The pinks ones however looked ok. Well, I cut the orange flowers off and they began immediately to produce more buds and came back very pretty, not stiff like they were. So now, whenever the flower starts looking ugly, I cut it off right under the head.
I have had a few problems with what they call 'profusion zinnias'. They are a shorter variety. I have the pink ones. At first I thought they were going to die but with a little more water they bounced back and really got taller than they should have been.
I plant more of the tall zinnias so I can get a good birds eye view of all the butterflies that swarm them. I can see them from my kitchen window. I love Zinnias!
Is that a white power on the leaves? You could have mildew. Larger plants keep going for a while with it but smaller ones weaken faster. I grew Purple Prince this year and had a time with the mildew. Baking soda kept it under control most of the summer. In mid-august I slacked off the spraying and while the flowers kept coming (these plants were huge..some over 5 feet) the foliage looked terrible and I pulled them out.
A before and after view of a 35 foot row of Purple Prince zinnias:
In that one pic it does look like mildew. I've never had a problem with mildew on mine but I've heard others that really did.
Your Purple Prince sure are pretty. My bed are the tall zinnias too and I have a mixed variety. Love em'.
