Ceeeping groundcover question

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

I have a couple in my garden- in my shade garden I have Creeping Jenny, which seems to spread fast. I have it around and near Cimicifuga, hostas, heucheras, and ferns. Is it ok to just let it keep on creeping, assuming I like how it looks in the location, or is it eventually going to be harmful to the neighboring plants....like keeping them from popping up in the spring?

Same question regarding creeping thyme, which I have in a sunnier spot. That is also growing quickly...will it just spread indefinitely? I don't really have that planted around other perennials, but I was thinking about it for next year.

I guess I'm not to clear on the proper way to use creeping groundcovers in the garden.

My creeping jenny dies back in the winter and becomes "green" again in the spring. Hostas, ferns and violets come up right through it and even clover and small weeds - but they don't get a very strong root and are easy to pull.

The thyme I have in a sunny bed is better at keeping weeds down but the saffron comes up right through it as well as the other herbs I have in the same bed. I have a patch or two where it completely died off - but over the three years I have had it - it has done well and even taken a bit of foot traffic.

Thanks for the fast response...I'm glad to hear your ferns come up thru the Creeping Jenny, as those were what I am most concerned with since the young fronds are so delicate looking..wasn't sure they had the "umph" to push up thru it. I have the CJ spreading out around a group of Japanese painted ferns, and I think the combo looks nice.

I loooove creeping jenny - I have the yellow variety and it is a nice splash of color in a shade garden. I also have Jack-in-the-Pulpit and Soloman's Seal coming up through it (I forgot about them earlier).
