I planted a variety of bushes and perrennials this fall in a newly landscaped (by me!) 1,000 square foot area of part shade, part sun yard. Everything was in the ground and mulched by the Wednesday after Labor Day.... I've been watering religiously, and we've had decent temps. But, now we're getting colder evenings already (I'm in Southwest WI) and I'm hoping the roots have had enough time to get a start! About how long do fall plantings need to set roots, or does it depend?
Bushes planted:
Euonymous (Chicago Fire)
Dwarf burning bush
Cinquefoil
Butterfly bush
Hydrangea (annabelle)
Forsythia
Perrenials planted:
Cinnamon and lady ferns
Solomon's seal and false solomon's seal
Wood phlox
Shooting star
Columbine
Early meadow rue
Woodland Joe Pye
Zig Zag Goldenrod
Heart leaved aster
Jack in the pulpit (bulb only)
And a few more in my sunny garden, but I'm sure you get the gist....
Thanks for any advice!
How long do fall plantings take to set roots?
What's really important is the soil temperature, not the air temperature. The soil holds its heat for a while, so especially if your daytime temps are still warm I wouldn't worry. Until you start to get cold days and freezing nights, the soil's probably still warm enough for the roots to be developing. I'm sure there's some sort of guideline about how long before your first frost date you ought to plant things so that you can be sure they'll have enough time to establish, but I don't know the guideline off the top of my head, hopefully someone else will know that.
The plant's roots will grow right up to the time the ground freezes hard.
Autumn is a great time to plant perennials, the Summer heat is gone, it usually rains, stuff is on clearance and we usually have more time.
Sounds like you have made great progress.
Thank you both so much for quick responses! I hope my lovely planting does well this fall. I did get most everything on clearance, so I am glad to hear this is a good time to put things in the ground!
Angel trumpets and dogs...any problems
Jemkob-are you getting the cold that we are here in MN? We are to be getting our 2nd freeze in 3 days. UGH!!
Nope, no frost yet... but it's been hovering in the low 40's/high 30's at night, and we might get one this weekend! Stay warm.
LOL-you too!-you should see my yard at night-covered in any sheet I can find-I have spongebob-buzz lightyear-rugrats right next to my fancy ones-LOL Looks really cute-LOL
I'm in Wyoming and have only had a very light frost so far. Normally we have a killer in late Aug. so this is very unusual for us. I was wondering too because I have some Sedum cuttings and hope they will be ok. I've had them in the garage inpots and now put them outside and mulced good so hoping they will be ok in the spring. Yvonne
I wish I could drive by the Sponge Bob yard! :-)
Jemcob-------nine of my 16 beds were planted in the fall. They all came up beautifully that first spring. and have for the two or three years they've been put in. AI wouldn't worry. I never covered any of them either. so.......
