Winter tomato?

Pass Christian, MS(Zone 8b)

Is there a winter tomato? My sister is looking for a tomato she can grow in her greenhouse over the winter. She lives in Theodore, AL, right outside of Mobile. Since we really don't have "winter" on the gulf coast, maybe she means more of a tomato that will grow November to February?

Thanks,
Megin

MzzPool, I'm certainly not an expert, but as long as the temperatures in your sister's greenhouse are warm enough through the whole winter, and it gets good light (think full sun), I think she should be fine planting most types of tomatoes. I guess I might recommend an early- to mid-season tomato, which produce in a shorter period of time than the late-season varieties. There are tons of different tomatoes out there. If she goes to a local nursery, she might get some ideas about what does well based on what they offer. Also, her county Ag extension office would be another good resource.

There are also a bunch of Florida folks who hang out on the Tomato forum here that might be able to offer "Gulf Coast" advice--they're super folks and extremely knowledgeable! You might want to ask them if there's anything specific they might recommend. Then again, you might get more suggestions than you know what to do with!

I think I remember reading that a lot of people down South have good luck with Brandywines, as far as a "traditional" red slicing-size tomato, but again, I would check and see what people have good luck with in your area.

I'd confirm: tomatoes like it hot and sunny. My tomato plants are still perfectly able, but my crop has dropped to almost nothing. We've started with the fall weather and they just won't produce in the cool, cloudy weather.
