I have a 5ftX5ft gardening bed in the middle of my backyard. It is raised 3ft above the ground and is surrounded by benches for people to sit.

Can anyone recommend an accent plan for this spot. I prefer something that is 5-7 ft tall at it's maturity and looks good entire year. Also, it should not have spikes/thorns, so we don't have to avoid the benches.

We are in San Jose bay area.

Melianthus. Really cool, but you have to see it in person. but here's a pic from plantfiles.Taken by Happenstance. It also has dark red -chocolate colored flowers when it blooms.
