am having prob with a potted aster that won't bloom, has buds on it but they dry up or are dead, never bloom. help!

Does the rest of the plant look healthy? Especially if you've had hot weather lately my guess is the plant isn't getting quite enough water, and if it's stressed because of that it's not going to have the energy to hold on to its flowers. This could also happen from getting too much water, so a lot depends on the type of conditions you're giving it.

or else watering too much. mine looks nice and green until i water it then it gets brown.
I think you must have to pinch like mums because mine had big blue blooms when i bought it last fall but now bloomed through summer and now but only have tiny blue blooms.

Len,
I have a Stokes aster and as long as I kept it deadheaded it bloomed abundantly. When our temps got into the triple digits, it died back somewhat but now that it's cooling off a little, it's growing again. Also, I only water it as needed and it seems to like that (no more than once a week). It's in a west facing garden where it gets intense afternoon sun (no small deal here in MS!) but it's thriving very well. Through the course of the summer I gave it a couple of doses of a "bloom booster" type fertilizer which it seemed to really appreciate.
