Is Cherry Cola considered brown? I'm sorry people, flowers are NOT supposed to be brown...... and the strained pea green ones??? Not too purty to me. However, I do like Cinnimon Girl (whether she's considered brown or not) and Key Lime Pie, but that is pretty green not baby food pea or bean green. Am I all by myself on this one??
Martindales Nursery
Well, I'd definitely purchase Medicine Man - I really like that one. Funny what you said about Hines and brown, Barry. My mom (who also is a hibiscus lover) says the same exact thing. I've got a number of different browns, and when she sees them bloom, she says "how nice", but I know she doesn't really like them. She says if it's "weird", I have to have it, lol :-)
DH too - I have a Honey Dijon Rose, and he thinks it looks like baby poo. Each to their own I guess, lol ;-)
Liz, I've also got an Irish Eyes, but mine hasn't bloomed yet either. Two little buds now, but it'll be a bit before they open. I sure do like the look of Irish Spring, and being Irish, I'm sure I'll have to get one of these too! The list is unending...
karen
I'm leaving work in a couple minutes..... I won't be back to defend myself for an hour or two... ;) (gulp)
LOL, Aunt B - every one has their own taste - none of it is "right" or "wrong" as far as I'm concerned. I know, personally, that my taste DOES tend towards the bizarre more often than not, lol ;-)
karen, the eccentric
Okay okay okay . . .
One MORE brown, this one getting good reviews on the Hibiscus Mail List, they tell me. I no longer read that list, but my NIGHTMARE is released and blooming its heart out now, 6-7". Another that might interest Matt? Excellent plant, excellent bloomer . . (Yucka x Roz Merritt)
NIGHTMARE
PEACE,
Barry
Oh Barry, I've seen that one pictured on the list and I love it every time! I definitely think Matt should sell it :-)
Barry,
Great to see you here. I am Sandy that talked to you about a green hibiscus. And you really blessed me. I need to email you about it. I am not sure if you want to give a peak of it. I know it is not brown. But I love it.
How long before a hibiscus once named does it get released?
I will email you back. I am home now.
I love all the ones you have posted. I love browns because they are so different and usually a flower that is brown is dead.
I like them all, but Nightmare and Medicine Man would be my first two picks. I think I tend to like flowers that show up well against the foliage, best.
I had to go back and look at Dirty Joke three times. I love the watercolor-ish look it has.
AuntB, I am not really fond of the strained peas colors either. They had to have been created by men who never changed a lot of baby diapers. (Now I am ducking and running.) LOL
:-))))))))
ardesia
How funny, BarrysHibiscus is the hybridizer of Irish Spring. ROTFLOL...
Good thing you ducked and ran. hahaha
Blessings,
Sandy ^8^
I NEED a Pebble Beach and Nightmare!
Emailing Matt, so he can peak in on this thread!
Robert, do you know Barry? You Should, if you don't :)
So, IF I were to get brown ones, Dirty Joke and Nightmare? That would be funny, if they were hardy for me, I would get them, just for the names! (space and light is becoming a valuable commodity in my basement) Thanks Ardesia, it's nice we get a wonderful color selection, to please everyone. IS Cherry Cola considered brown? (I just got that one from Mark) Cat don't you have enough?? lol...
Do we really ever get enough??
Not me. Hibiscus are to die for. I can't see one without needing and wanting it really really bad. And :( everyday there are new ones to need. They are a bigger need than want ;o)
You know I really don't know for sure I need to go out and count. I will return.
No, No don't count..... I did that last week, you don't want to know! LINDA!
To late. I have 38 and that does include the last 5 I just got. That includes 2 trees, 5 bushes. OMG I hope they fit in the GH.
See, it toad ya........ it's okay, if you have a couple extra's you can't get to fit, I I can find room over here ;)
Just heard from Matt. He will be growing :
1. Nightmare
2. Medicine Man
I am waiting to hear from him. There is another one he may grow, but I can't post the pic unless he says it's ok.
Okay, well, that's three for me to definitely order in the Spring! Persian Rug is beautiful - kinda looks like Antique Treasure with the addition of neon pink! So cool :-)
Persian Rug, Nightmare and Medicine Man are my favs.
I know whatr you mean, AuntB - flowers are suppose to shock you from the street! But the browns don't stand out against their dark green foliage. But when I see something brown like the Medicine Man - it's sooooooo stunning!! However, if I were to see it wagaint the foliage on a bush, it might not call my name, no telling. :) I'm still partial to the browns though .... even still!
Hats off to Tom Miller for making Time for Magic. It is hard to clone but just a wonderful color break, and the best news . . is that it makes babies maybe better than itself.
CAse in point is my Yoda below, a cross of my flower (var. Barry Schlueter) and Time for Magic.
Yoda is now competing for Hibiscus of the Year. And perhaps the best news? You can buy it from Matt soon.
peace,
Barry
Carefree Beauty is very pretty! Congrats. Does Matt contribute here? I wonder who created Carefree Beauty? How big is it? That spotting is pretty distinctive and I may actually need to BUY a hibiscus plant to work with its genes. Don't tell my wife, who thinks that a few thousand seedlings in pots are enough hibiscus!
;-)
Attached is a wonderful European newbie from the Gommers. Named for wife, Yolanda Gommer, wood came to me thru mutual dear friend Francoise Levavasseur in France. Someone in this country needs to be growing and selling this gem.
peace and joy,
Barry
Hi Barry,
Matt said that "soon" he will join. I went to his house two weeks ago, to pick out hibs and met him. He is soooooooooo nice.
For right now, till he joins, he peaks on this thread and sends me pics, and info, to post for him.
However, a birdy told me that you two know each other, obviously, lol.
I don't know anything about Carefree beauty, but I am sure if you call Matt, he will tell you anything you need to know, and sell you one too :)
Ooooo, Yolanda Gommer has some fabulous colors. You are right, someone needs to be growing that one. I volunteer.......LOL
Yep, I agree with Ardesia - someone here in the states needs to grow and sell this one.
Yoda is stunning! I can hardly wait until Matt sells it!
Cat, and others who have Time for Magic, is yours "finicky"? I have found that, at least here in inland So Cal, this is definitely my most finicky cultivar...I love the flower and am so excited when a bloom makes it to the open stage, but I've noticed any little stress at all (i.e., change in temp, or too hot) makes the buds drop.
Just curious as to others experiences on this one,
karen
Mine is too new to notice. It will probably be 3 or 4 months before I see a bloom
Gorgeous, yes someone .... we need to have that one available here, for us! ;) Barry that Yoda is stunning!! (even if it IS a brown) I might be converting, right before everyone's eyes! So much for my former claim of not liking the browns! Since we get little tid bits of what Matt is up to - through Cat... we'll just have to be content with that... he's lurking... he's a busy man... keep inquiring Cat, (oh, no! We've probably scared him off!) Barry your Barry S. is on my want list for spring!
Matt's wife probably won't let him hang out here with everyone calling him "Handsome Matt" and all that sort of thing!
Aunt B, I too was not enamored of the browns and now I just love them to death! I think it is an acquired taste.
Welcome BarrysHibiscus. I can tell you are going to add dramatically to our group lust. You have made some beauties for sure. THANKS! I just know all that you have posted on here need to come live with me. Especially your Yoda. Intense! You all are making it so hard for me not indulge myself in such beauty till spring. Shoot.
Liz! you may be right..... (sigh) Guess we need to cool it! (but, she knows he's handsome....and we WILL help her be a rich lady) lol
emailing Matt now, for the scoop on Yoda.
Neat thing about the internet, you don't have to worry about waking someone up at 1 in the morning, to find out some info, LOL.
Hey this may sound strange but being that I am new around this part of the country but where is this nursery that matt has?
Mrs. Martindale will simply have to endure the sight of all those beautiful Hibiscus, her beautiful and gentlemanly husband working at it, and the reward for both of their collective efforts.
If this keeps up, she'll be wealthier than Leona Helmsley and surrounded by a beter Xanadu than even Kubla Khan imagined.
Keep complimenting and buying. They deserve it.
