That's what we're here for Karen. We are just passionate about our interests.. ;)
Martindales Nursery
OH! I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited! Got my new babies from Matt at Martindale's!!!!! I won't unpack until I get them home tonight... but it is so hard not to peek! They will transport better if I leave them alone.... but it's really hard to!
AuntB, cool! Now, I'm excited to get home from work. I hope mine are here too!
I got mine today. I opened mine and they look great. As soon as the GD get to sleep I will go out and repot them. Then I will post a picture want to wait after they are potted and have watered them good with some SuperThrive.
AuntB you never did say which ones you ordered. Is it a secret?
No secret, Linda.. Cherry Cola, Nanette Peach, Night Fire and Hot Ross. What'd you get?
Love Potion, Black Dragon, Cherry Ice, Junes Dragon and Eva Paoloni.
He said he should have a Nightfire ready in about a month.
Now I gotta go see... I love the names, too! Love potion, Hot Ross.. .... So did your's have any buds? How tall are they? Oh, I have to run by the grocery store before I get home! Luckily, it's not an oven in the car today. It's actually almost cool w/ slight breeze, car said 62 degrees at lunch time! I'm between Topeka and Emporia, DD called mid morning said we got a little thunder and enough rain to barely wet the deck....I hope to get a lot accomplished outside this weekend.
No buds there size is between 12 and 20 inches tall. Very nice plants.
Great, I'm growing them in my living area, so when they bloom this winter, we'll be able to post pics! (Positive thinking leads to positive action leads to hib blooms in January 08) Yippee, I'm outta here.
Just wanted to report.... my new hibbies are TOP NOTCH! The Night Fire is the smallest, but so healthy and I feel lucky to get it since Mark growing your's out some, Linda. The others are around 20 inches or so, and very healthy plants. Very well packed with a Thank You note signed personally by Matt. There are BUDS on Cherry Cola and Nanette Peach! I have them inside to acclimate them from their trip from FL, but these beauties will be my biggest babies this winter... (getting the utmost attention from me, big babies anyway). With temps in the 40's at night now, I think they will stay inside, 40's is too cold for baby hibs. Linda, haven't had a chance to check out which ones you got, and I have additional ones on my "Bonnie WILL have list"........ but for now, I've got to stop. My south windows will be full, and no funds to knock out a wall and install windows! lol I am making a VERY positive post over on the Watchdog - Right now, they are stretching those beautiful leaves and saying "You guys, this lady is going be a great mama, we get to live on a bench behind the couch and watch it snow this winter and get our picture taken!!"
I've just found this thread and ...what can I say... but Wow... to all the photos, tumbling exercises, handsome Matt, and the seemingly endless names of wonderous plants.
My plants from handsome Matt arrived today and I have to tell you my experience with handsome Matt has been nothing short of positive. From his courteous and friendly emails to the beautiful plants that came today, I feel very spoiled. My Nightfire even came with a bud!!! Tomorrow I'll repot these plants and a couple of dozen other new plants, and then go looking for more pots at 40% off. By now, they may be 50 or 60 percent off. I need to save money as I've already put us over the projected budget for the new rooms and we're only half way finished.
Tussee
Oh Alice, your Neoregelia is just so great. I must say I love Neoregelia too. Have you seen the new hybrid Neoregelia in Australia? So fantastic, I am thinking of going to Australia just to see them!! The nursery was for sale too.
Oh Sandy, sounds like you hit something much harder than dirt like I did. Hope your tailbone is OK!!
Alice, I have B. nutans too. I just love the coloring on it. Oh Karen, I am planning another trip. I have a new fascination with agaves and I saw 1 at the Huntington and then 2 at Rainforest that so intrigued me. I feel another need coming on.
Aunt B, I am not sure if it is passion or just being nuts and needy. You all have me convinced I need to go look at what Handsome Matt has that I need. I am off to Carmel-by-the-Sea tomorrow but on Monday I plan to really look!
Oh Miss Tussee, I bought 2 huge blue pots today. I had bought 1 last week and decided I needed 3 to match. Now to fill them, the best part.
Here is another bromeliad I found in LA last week that needed to come home. It looks like a aechmea.
Ahhhh, new obsessions are always fresh and special. :-))))
That brom is too cool Kell and I love the little curly top tillandsias around it. Did you get to bring them home too?
Reminds me of an old-fashioned Christmas! Those colors and the photo are striking! Beautiful, Kell.
Aunt B, I walked into that nursery and saw those colors and grabbed it.
Oh Alice, talk about new loves. I am such a loose woman, always dragging my new loves home to live with me. LOL. But bromeliads are a very old love. My first real crush I remember was on bromeliads over 30 years ago. A lady that ran a little nursery had some that mesmerized me and she had me join the bromeliad society all those years ago.
I find I continue to enjoy the beauty of my old loves while I learn to appreciate new ones.
My newest love are some succulents. I do not even know the name yet but have noticed 4 different ones now in 4 designs in the last couple of weeks. My pattern is I start to notice a plant, and over usually 1 to 2 years I get more and more intrigued and then one day I see one for a good price that is a beauty and as I reach for this first one I know I am a goner. I have followed this pattern with succulents in general, gravitating towards euphorbias but these concentric ones have caught me hard and fast. One to the gut or rather the heart.
Isn't pot culture such fun? You can have succulents right next to fancy hibiscus next to bromeliads. Isn't life grand?
I saw this in the Huntington's succulent greenhouse. Tell me it does not capture your interest?
Sandy, I hope you have recovered from your fall down the stairs and are not having any continuing repercussions. Bouncing from step to step could have been fatal.
Kell, my gal, so pleased to read you only seriously injured your pride. By rolling with the roll, I bet you spared yourself broken bones and possibly head injury. Who would I have then to show me pictures of so many grand plants that I'll probably never see again?
AuntB, will you fertilize this winter the new plants you are putting in the south windows? I've never bought young hibiscus this late in the year. I sprinkle Osmocote on my large plants every three months or so and they bloom all winter.
Tussee
Yes, Kell I'm enjoying your pics, too but be careful, everyone. Tussee, I don't normally buy them now either, but I see all the lovely bloom pics, I can't resist. I got 4 free hibiscus from a fellow DG'er last fall and I grew them in the spot I will grow these, because they were dug up out of the ground... and I wanted to baby them... so this fall those will go in the basement with moderate light, minimal water and not be fed... but these newest youngin's will get fed 1/4 to 1/2 strength 20-20-20 every couple weeks or so, depending on how I feel they are doing... the ones last winter bloomed off and on clear through to taking them outside last spring. But I do have some Osmocote, that seems easier than trying to keep track of when I fed, I think I'll try that with them, Thanks, Tussee. I can do it now, at Christmas and then at St. Patricks Day and then they'll be ready for "solid" (Rose) food for going outside in Spring!
Kell, I love the little white squiggles (SP?)on that agave. I ran right outside to see if any of mine had them and boo hoo, they didn't. And, I always mix my hibiscus with grasses and succulents in my container gardens on the deck and in the garden.
Aunt B, maybe you could fix up some flourescent lights in the basement for your hibs?
That's exactly my plan, Ardesia! Now, it's just getting it implemented! There is a small south window for natural light, but as my winter guest list grows, I don't think it's ample lighting for everything. I think I counted a dozen or more outside that need to survive down there and then I have the baby variegated one (Snow Queen?) I rooted last winter and Matt's 4 new ones, but those will grow upstairs with me, for bloom appeal and so this nervous nellie can keep a daily eye on their progress. I'm thinking 2 of the 4-bulb units and put them on a timer.... it's about 16-20 ft wide area and I can make it as long as I want (stave off moving 3 pallets of my kids' crap), the light from the window won't be enough any more. I just want to state: It won't stop here, I'm seriously thinking of getting a greenhouse (or just moving to FL, lol-just kidding).
I know I'm late to post on this, but I wanted to let you guys know that I got my Martindale plants on Friday too. Wow, large and wonderful one and all! I purchased 8 and they're all different sizes, but the smallest is 11". All are nicely branched for such little things. The cultivars I got are Wallflower, Black Voodoo, Sterling Silver, Ruth Watson, Zoey, Campfire Girl, Antique Rose and Etouffe. I'll definitely be posting very positive feedback and will be back to purchase more plants from "handsome Matt" ;-)
karen
Karen,
Wait till Ruth Watson blooms. You won't believe how huge this flower is!
And of course, Etouffe is my very, very favorite brown of all time, so far.
Even more favorite than Voodoo Magic? I'm seen bloom pictures of Etouffe and it looks just stunning - you KNOW how I love the browns :-) Yes, I'm quite anxious to see Ruth Watson. I was going to get a Kinchen's Yellow until I saw the picture of Ruth. How easily I switch allegiences, lol ;-)
Wonder if Handsome Matt has any stock left? lol He's been quite a busy guy, sending emails, answering phone calls, handling any customers stopping by, packing and shipping plants to us all... AND cleaning up after the storm! He replied to my thank you email and said he was going to sign up with DG in the very near future... (See Dave, I'm ALWAYS plugging our community;)! Please be sure to post over in the Watchdog, There was only 1, from Ecrane when I checked him out (I MEAN- researched his company- LOL) before ordering....
Etoufee knocks Voodoo Magic out of the water! She is reddish orange in the center and a deep golden brown on the outside. She is one I lost in the floods, so greatful I have her back again.
I am sure Matt still has more, maybe....lol!
I know I posted under the watchdog.
PS....Matt did peak at this thread and sent me emails with a smile.
cat, I keep forgetting you had the flood, so sorry... I'm glad you're getting your fatalities, restored. It's such a bummer when we lose 1 or 2 but "enmass" is just devastating! I'm not even going to look at anymore bloom pics.... cause I want them ALL. So piggish of me! lol And I don't have brown ones, so don't be posting pics so I will run into them lol..... Cinnamon Girl or something like that, I think it's brown, ALMOST landed in my shopping cart this fall. Every picture I've seen of her is stunning, almost fluorescent! I told him he had caused quite a frenzy, here.. Ohhhh..... that Matt, priceless;)
AuntB, I think you NEED some browns!!! What do you think, Cat?
;-) karen
Eyes are shut, hands over ears - lalalalalalalalalalala, hmmhmmmhmmmhmmm lol
Karen, I am right there with you. NO garden should be without a brown. They are absolutely brilliant!
Eyes still shut, hands over ears - doing the hokey pokey singing twinkle twinkle little star...... No, I'm NOT seeking out a pic to be sure it's the vibrant one.....
Ah! The sights and sounds of happy gardeners...
Martindale's rules...
I was glad to recommend them. Good plants and conscientious businessmen make my day.
We're all in the joy business, and when joy abounds - the world is a better place.
Now...I need a nice, big loan and a loaner dump truck lo deliver the bucks to Matt. It will also be useful for bringing the booty home to roost!
Have you seen this one Ms.Liz? I should think a mass planting in your garden would be appropriate. :-)))

I went to his sale last year and this is the one I wanted
http://www.barryschlueter.com/gallery/photo.cgi?id=72
He did not have any and now it will be released next year. I am counting the days.
(tapping my fingers on the table trying to be patient)
Question How can there be 2 irish Spring? I can't remember who has it but a froggies_girl saw I wanted it and bought it for me. Dennis was in the hospital and I took it there with me. But I ended up losing it. They are so different in color.
Will see if I can find it and post.
Blessings,
Sandy ^8^
Maybe you had Irish Eyes rather than Irish Spring? I have Irish Eyes but it hasn't bloomed yet, the color is very different than Irish Spring.
I am wondering if either of these two nurseries would be interested in doing a co-op around March. I would be intersted in getting some liners, if we could find one to do it. Anyone else interested.
No I couldn't do a co-op, but I sure would buy.
You folks remind me of myself and Don Florus and Gene Powell up in Katy, TX. Any color of brown will do!
This is one of my latest seedlings, and Matt is already growing it for you. Name is Pebble Beach and it is orange, brown and army green, though the photo may not have captured it all. (EZDuzit x Mellow Yellow). The former is a floriferous cute brown and orange mini, the later a huge yellow Hines will sell . . next year I think. Pebble Beach is large, never less than 8" here in TX, and though not as brown as some, it is brown enough to make ME smile.
peace and joy,
Barry
One more new brown, (Firelight x Eyes of Texas), called DIRTY JOKE. 6-7", very heavy texture like Medicine Man, good bloomer, released but no one is marketing it. Believe it or not, browns are hard to sell to normal humans, they tell me. Hines fears that the public will think the plant is dying if they see brown flowers. . .
peace,
Barry
This is the first year I have seen any browns. But next year I will have to get me one or two. They do look very interesting.
I think the reason you may not be seeing to many of them is because a lot of Hibiscus lovers go for the bright colored one.
But I do like the ones you are showing.
