Words of wisdom I received today with a gardening related theme:

Quoting:
Lessons on Life
There was a man who had four sons. He wanted his sons to learn not to judge things too quickly. So he sent them each on a quest, in turn, to go and look at a pear tree that was a great distance away.

The first son went in the winter, the second in the spring, the third in summer, and the youngest son in the fall.

When they had all gone and come back, he called them together to describe what they had seen.

The first son said that the tree was ugly, bent, and twisted.

The second son said no it was covered with green buds and full of promise.

The third son disagreed; he said it was laden with blossoms that smelled so sweet and looked so beautiful, it was the most graceful thing he had ever seen.

The last son disagreed with all of them; he said it was ripe and drooping with fruit, full of life and fulfillment.

The man then explained to his sons that they were all right, because they had each seen but only one season in the tree's life.

He told them that you cannot judge a tree, or a person, by only one season, and that the essence of who they are and the pleasure, joy, and love that come from that life can only be measured at the end, when all the seasons are up.

If you give up when it's winter, you will miss the promise of your spring, the beauty of your summer, and the fulfillment of your fall.

Moral: Don't let the pain of one season destroy the joy of all the rest.

Don't judge life by one difficult season.

Persevere through the difficult patches and better times are sure to come some time.

Aspire to Inspire Before You Expire!

Live Simply. Love Generously. Care Deeply. Speak Kindly.
Leave the Rest to God.

Happiness keeps You Sweet,

Trials keep You Strong,

Sorrows keep You Human,

Failures keep You Humble,

Success keeps You Glowing,

But Only God keeps You Going!

I personally don't believe in the astrological signs, but I found this and thought it was funny. I'm a possum! What are you?

Quoting:
Some Southerners are pretty skeptical of horoscopes and the people who read them. If we are to ever fully understand all the star signs and the people they represent, we need symbols that all true Southerners understand. See the list below.

OKRA (Dec 22 - Jan 20) Are tough on the outside but tender on the inside. Okras have tremendous influence. An older Okra can look back over his life and see the seeds of his influence everywhere. You can do something good each day if you try.

CHITLIN ( Jan 21 - Feb 19) Chitlins come from humble backgrounds. A Chitlin, however, will make something of himself if he is motivated and has lots of seasoning. In dealing with Chitlins, be careful they may surprise you. They can erupt like Vesuvius. Chitlins are best with Catfish and Okra.

BOLL WEEVIL (Feb 20 - March 20) You have an overwhelming curiosity. You're unsatisfied with the surface of things, and you feel the need to bore deep into the interior of everything. Needless to say, you are very intense and driven as if you had some inner hunger. You love to stay busy and tend to work too much. Nobody in their right mind is going to marry you, so don't worry about it.

MOON PIE (March 21 - April 20) You're the type that spends a lot of time on the front porch. A cinch to recognize the physical appearance of Moon Pies. Big and round are the key words here. You should marry anybody who you can get remotely interested in the idea. It's not going to be easy. You always have a big smile and are happy. This might be the year to think about aerobics. Maybe not.

POSSUM (April 21 - May 21) When confronted with life's difficulties, possums have a marked tendency to withdraw and develop a don't bother-me-about-it attitude. Sometimes you become so withdrawn, people actually think you're dead. This strategy is probably not psychologically healthy but seems to work for you. You are a rare breed. Most folks love to watch you work and play. You are a night person and mind your own business.

CRAWFISH (May 22 - June 21) Crawfish is a water sign. If you work in an office, you're hanging around the water cooler. Crawfish prefer the beach to the mountains, the pool to the golf course, and the bathtub to the living room. You tend not to be particularly attractive physically, but you have very, very good heads.

COLLARDS (June 22 - July 23) Collards have a genius for communication. They love to get in the melting pot of life and share their essence with the essence of those around them. Collards make good social workers, psychologists, and baseball managers. As far as your personal life goes, if you are Collards, stay away from Crawfish. It just won't work. Save yourself a lot of heartache.

CATFISH (July 24 - Aug 23) Catfish are traditionalists in matters of the heart, although one's whiskers may cause problems for loved ones. You Catfish are never easy people to understand. You run fast. You work and play hard. Even though you prefer the muddy bottoms to the clear surface of life, you are liked by most. Above all else, Catfish should stay away from Moon Pies.

GRITS (Aug 24 - Sept 23) Your highest aim is to be with others like yourself. You like to huddle together with a big crowd of other Grits. You love to travel though, so maybe you should think about joining a club. Where do you like to go? Anywhere they have cheese, gravy, bacon, butter, or eggs and a good time. If you can go somewhere where they have all these things, that serves you well. You are pure in heart.

BOILED PEANUTS (Sept 24 - Oct 23) You have a passionate desire to help your fellow man. Unfortunately, those who know you best, your friends and loved ones, may find that your personality is much too salty, and their criticism will affect you deeply because you are really much softer than you appear. You should go right ahead and marry anybody you want to because in a certain way, yours is a charmed life. On the road of life, you can be sure that people will always pull over and stop for you.

BUTTER BEAN (Oct 24 - Nov 22) Always invite a Butter Bean to a party because Butter Beans get along well with everybody. You, as a Butter Bean, should be proud. You've grown on the vine of life, and you feel at home no matter what the setting. You can sit next to anybody. However, you, too, shouldn't have anything to do with Moon Pies.

ARMADILLO (Nov 23 - Dec 21) You have a tendency to develop a tough exterior, but you are actually quite gentle and kind inside. A good evening for you? Old friends, a fire, some roots, fruit, worms, and insects. You are a throwback. You're not concerned with today's fashions and trends. You're not concerned with anything about today. You're almost prehistoric in your interests and behavior patterns. You probably want to marry another Armadillo, but a Possum is another somewhat kinky mating possibility.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

oh how funny! Problem is I see a lot of these traits in my friends and relatives according to their *sign*. I am boiled peanuts married to grits. Since I am on the cusp, I am sometimes a butter bean.

Thanks for a really good laugh, TJ.

LouC

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm married to a Crawfish and we've got a Collard and a Catfish. Now you'll know what to say if anyone ever asks "What do you get when you cross a possum and a crawfish?"

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

We have a boll wevil and a moon pie. butter beans are warned against moon pies. my moon pie and I cross swords often.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I'm Boiled Peanuts, married to an Okra, and we have a Possum and a Collard. LOLOL Very fun. :-)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I am an Armadillo married to a Chittlin, this is really cute TJ.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

mm interesting I'm a BOLL WEEVIL and dang if I'm not married to Boiled Peanuts.
I don't think I agree with the You have an overwhelming curiosity.and the very intense and driven as if you had some inner hunger...but the rest is about right

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Moon Pie here, with Armadillo DH!

Cute horoscope.

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!! A very sad, sad, day in history!!!! Just as it is for so many today still.

I was talking to a lady in the Dr's office on Tuesday. Her husband was over in Iraq for quite awhile. Even tho he's been home for some time he is still having the post traumatic stress disorder, major flashbacks!!! It is very sad. My dad went thru that when he came home from Viet Nam. He suffered for years. We need to keep all of our troops in our prayers daily!!!!

SUMMARY OF MY LAST YEAR ON THE COMPUTER...hehehehe

I must send my thanks to whoever sent me the one about poop in the glue on
envelopes because I now have to use a wet towel with every envelope that
needs sealing.

Also, now I have to scrub the top of every can I open for the same reason.

I no longer eat KFC because their chickens are actually horrible mutant
freaks with no eyes or feathers.

I no longer use cancer-causing deodorants even though I smell like a water
buffalo on a hot day.

Thanks to you, I have learned that my prayers only get answered if I forward
an email to ten of my friends and make a wish within five minutes and if
not, I don't believe in God.

Because of your concern I no longer drink Coca Cola because it can remove
toilet stains.

I no longer drink Pepsi or Dr. Pepper since the people who make these
products are atheists who refuse to put "Under God" on their cans

I no longer use Saran wrap in the microwave because it causes cancer.

And thanks for letting me know I can't boil a cup of water in the microwave
anymore because it will blow up in my face... disfiguring me for life.

I no longer check the coin return on pay phones because I could be pricked
with a needle infected with AIDS.

I no longer go to shopping malls because someone will drug me with a perfume
sample and rob me.

I no longer receive packages from UPS or Fed Ex since they are actually Al
Qaeda in disguise.

I no longer shop at Target since they are French and don't support our
American troops or the Salvation Army.

I no longer can buy gasoline without taking someone along to watch the car
so a serial killer won't crawl in my back seat when I'm pumping gas.

I no longer have any savings because I gave it to a sick girl (Penny Brown)
who is about to die in the hospital for the 1,387,258th time.

I no longer have any money at all, but that will change once I receive the
$15,000 that Bill Gates/Microsoft and AOL are sending me for participating
in their special e-mail program.

I no longer worry about my soul because I have 363,214 angels are looking
out for me and St. Theresa's novena has granted my every wish.

I no longer answer the phone because someone will ask me to dial a number
for which I will get a phone bill with calls to Jamaica, Uganda, Singapore ,
and Uzbekistan.

I no longer buy expensive cookies from Neiman Marcus since I now have their
recipe.

Thanks to you, I can't use anyone's toilet but mine because a big brown
African spider is lurking under the seat to cause me instant death when it
bites my butt.

And thanks to your great advice, I can't ever pick up $5.00 I dropped in the
parking lot because it probably was placed there by a sex molester waiting
underneath my car to grab my leg.

I can no longer drive my car because I can't buy gas from certain gas
companies!

If you don't send this e-mail to at least 144,000 people in the next 70
minutes, a large dove with diarrhea will land on your head at 5:00 PM this
afternoon and the fleas from 12 camels will infest your back, causing you to
grow a hairy hump. I know this will occur because it actually happened to a
friend of my next door neighbor's ex-mother-in-law's second husband's
cousin's beautician...

Have a wonderful day....

Oh, by the way..... A South American scientist from Argentina, after a
lengthy study, has discovered that people with insufficient brain activity
read their e-mail with their hand on the mouse.

Don't bother taking it off now, it's too late.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

oohhhhhoooohahhahaheheheheh
Too late, I had my hand on my mouse the whole time. Gotta love it!

Now I know what you have been not/doing lately. hahahaha.

Hey Connie!!!
Are you still up? Are you still stuck in big D? Hope you made it back to Austin by now. It is really cold out this morning so I would love to be a bit more south.
I haven't been on this thread in quite a while. It is slow now on the hummer butterfly forum so I am skipping around.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I have been staying over on the Tropical Gardening Forum. Such beautiful lush plants. Wildest part is discovering three subscribers right in my backyard that grow nothing but tropicals. Of course, they have very large greenhouses. Oh, the sun is coming up and it is beautiful...23* but pretty. Sheila, I have my tropicals in my little barn with an electric heater. I think Mitch told me that is what you do. So far it has worked out very well. That is till I get my electric bill.

Stay warm.

Christi

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

O.K., I guess I have been remiss on the chit chat department, sorry Connie-w.
But since Christi mentioned the sunrise I went and looked out my back door and this is what I saw, magnificent do you agree?
Great way to start the day!!!
Josephine.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

I've been remiss in the chitchat dept too. Just too busy over the holidays.

I dunno what you guys have cooking in Arlington, but we are not having that gorgeous sunrise over here! Very cold and cloudy at the moment.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Jo....that is a STUNNING sunrise!! I think our clear , cold weather makes for better ones....maybe?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I must have missed that sunrise while getting ready for work, it is beautiful Josephine!! I was going to check the Frostweed once again this morning and didn't. I had a few branches that didn't burst yet. Patti, I think she just caught it at the right moment, and we missed it.
Lou, my cats and plants are cozy warm in the shop. I have two space heaters that have thermostats. I think they get a stray visitor during the night though because ever now and again I find plants overturned as if they are trying to get away from something. They usually just lay on their cushion and sleep until the sun is out then they will venture up to the deck and lay in the sun.
Some of my mints and other things have died back, but hopefully they will be ok and bounce back in the spring. I have been pretty faithful watering everything this year. Last year I was not and lost a lot of my tender stuff.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

You are right Sheila, it didn't last long, and I am very glad I caught it on film.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

So tell me about the frostweed, please? Mine (the two that Josephine gave me at the swap) went dormant pretty early, and I thought I had lost them. But today I noticed that they have burst stems, so I guess I just missed it. Does that mean they're probably still alive?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes they are alive, the frost doesn't hurt the roots and they come back in the spring just fine.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

The sunset tonight was almost the same as this morning in your picture..I had stepped out at work the back door at work to talk with the chef and thought about the picture you posted today and thought it looks almost the same

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Do you guys know where I should post a question about pruning lantana? I looked it up and got pruning sage and ones on lantana...in the Texas forum....but nothing specifically on pruning lantana..

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, the sunsets can be beautiful too, and usually happens more often than with the sunrises. Here is a picture of a sunset from a year or two ago.

Thumbnail by frostweed
Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Whoa...that looks for all the world like an apocalyptic fire!!! Gorgeous!!!!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Connie, what type of Lantana is it you need to prune?

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

It must be something with the Texas winters I have never seen such wonderful sunrises or sunsets before this year in Illinois the closest ya get is the northern lights
