Hi everyone.
Our first frost is coming! 33 degrees (and rain) is the low predicted for Monday and I still have a garden full of veggies. Can you tell be the best way to protect them, also which ones I need to worry about most? My list is below:
Zucch's
Peas
Tomatoes
Beans
Peppers
Onions
beets
eggplants
radishes
Help! Frost coming!
Don't worry about peas, onions, beets and radishes.
33 isn't likely to be a hard frost, and your tender veggies may come through, but they aren't likely to be very productive. You can pick the green tomatoes, which will likely ripen off the vine, and the peppers, which don't need to be ripe to use.
33 isn't really all that bad. If your veggies are in rows, what I do is take painter's drop sheets (plastic) and tent them over the stakes on my tomatoes. You might have to drive stakes for everything else. My garden has always survived a few of the first frosts (and last frosts in the spring) with this method. If it starts getting really cold and you have lots of tomatoes left on your vines, pull up the entire plant and hang it upside down in a garage or shed and your tomatoes will finish the ripening process there.
