Mark, i'd just be glad if mine bloomed!!!! The plant grows really well but no flowers as of yet.
Carol just go ahead and rub it in that your poly is blooming as most of us cant even get the plant to grow let alone form peduncles and bloom!!!! I struggled with one last year and finally got it to a happy place where it was growing very well and then about a month ago all at once the entire plant turned this nice bright shade of yellow and DIED!!!!
I have bought a very pretty all green replacement from home depot but this wll be my third poly and if this one dies i'm through with it. If I kill any hoya 3 times i'm done with that variety and bella just fell into that category very recently!!!
September Blooms
Great blooms everyone.
Tami
David, what clone of H. waymaniae do you have? Perhaps some are better bloomers than others. It grows and flowers well for me, perhaps better than any other hoya I have, and polynuera grows well but no flowers as of yet. Perhaps both of these plants respond to cooler conditions? Waymaniae is from a warm environment, polynuera a cool one, but who knows what will actually prompt a plant to grow/flower in cultivation. Maybe my waymaniae thinks an ice age is coming on and is trying to make seed before it freezes to death.
Mark I received my plant from Carol so whichever clone she has is the one that I have.
dmichael
That's where mine came from too!
So did mine and I never get blooms!!!!
I received my polyneura as a beautiful lush plant grown by a woman in Phoenix or Tucson...I forget which. She grew it in a closet that had a sky light in the AC...seldom have I seen a more beautiful hoya as that one!!!
Christina, those leaves are to die for!!
Beautiful, Christina!
Karen
Carol,
Can you post some pics of polyneura blooms when you get a chance? I'd love to see those. And congrats to you!!
Mark,
I absolutely LOVE those waymaniae blooms and your pic. The color of the blooms is what got me to get a cutting from David Liddle. I've lost a bunch of leaves though. My leaves aren't red at all...I would assume that is from sunlight?
Sara,
I love the color on your H. montana blooms...it's just such a pure creme color - gorgeous. I need to add that one to my wish list. About my H. lobbii....yes, that is the actual color of the blooms, but I think they turn darker (like a burgundy color) as they get a little "older", as least for me (I know that other members get a more pink/salmon color)....when I first received the plant while it was in "late" bloom, they were darker, so that's why I think that they'll probably get darker at a later stage. I'll post pics if they do.
Ok...so H. motoskei opened today
There is a H. lobbii that blooms orange corollas and red coronas, and one where both are red. You have the first...it seems...nice!!!!
Will post the polyneura if DH ever takes the picture!!!!
Carol
Gasp !!! I just love the coloring of the H. lobbii, second photo. what a pretty plum purple. It's amazing how the colors changed from your first and second bloom.
Christina your leaves on waymaniae are just beautiful. And Mark your photo and bloom on this one is gorgeous.
Carol I will get a picture of the leaves on sp. sulawesi tomorrow. I am confussed.
Sara your Montana is beautiful, does this hoya have thin leaves? I am kind of a thin leaved hoya loser !!
Tami, the montana has medium leaves - not as thin as chlorantha or cv. iris marie, but not as thick as say obovata. More like a carnosa...succulent, but very nice. Actually much nicer than I thought it would be when I purchased it.
Mark, I honestly did not notice any smell at all on the montana. Bummer eh? I checked at different times of the day too, so I am going with the "no smell at all" answer.
I love the patterning of your waymaniae leaves Christina! Mark, that orange is too cool! Here's hoping I see some in my life time!! HA, actually, I have been getting more and more blooms, enough at least to start looking at flowers, rather than just foliage when deciding on hoyas in the future.
Gabi, the color of your lobbi is absolutely striking. Again, it isn't one that I have felt the need to have, but I am just becoming more and more tempted.
S
I find lobbii a challenge because, like cembra, iris marie etc...it is really best viewed from BELOW...and I can't find places that high to hang them!!!!
BTW - I will be scarce for the next two weeks after Wed when I go to the mainland to visit son/granddaughter and then a painting workshop. Will check in when I can..... FYI...don't think I got swallowed by the volcano!!!
Carol
Christina, is that the round leaved collection of H. waymaniae?
Mark, it looks like this one does get rounder leaves than my other older one. I have them potted together and it's the rounder one that gets more red. I think I bought the round one as H. sp. Orange Peel with a note saying it was a variety of waymaniae.
/Christina
Thanks Mark. And WOW...I just cannot get over the colors in those flowers. Absolutely gorgeous. I have the round-leafed one also (same as Sara).
Sara, mine also came with just a few leaves (maybe 3 or 4), and now I'm down to 2. We'll see what happens!
Waymaniae seems a little tricky to root, but Julia has just had success doing it. I really like the round-leaved version- the colors look so intense in the foliage, especially the backs of the leaves.
ooh, I found a peduncle on my Fungii yesterday. Now I know what to look forward too.
dawn
Beautiful pictures as always, Christina!! I just love the fuzzy flowers on Chouke!!
Karen
I don't have Chouke yet, but it is on my "wish lish" for next spring. How does it smell, Christina?
Lovely pics as always.
I just put that round leafed waymaniae on my "list" also.
Congrats to all the new blooms everyone.
Marcy
Okay!!! Finally I can say that I have some hoya flowers to post pics of for one of these monthly threads. The blooms have been few and far between for me this year for some reason.
I cant take credit for getting this one to bloom as it was gifted to me and arrived today with the open flowers already on it!!! What more could a guy ask for than an already rooted and in bloom H. praetorii!!!!!
Sorry some of these pics might be a bit fuzzy but i'm a hoya grower not a photographer!!!!
Sara, sorry to say that after receiving this plant today the newness has already worn off of that H. linears that I got yesterday!!!!
dmichael
Very nice David....I know that you have wanted H. praetorii (sp? - not in the mood to look it up right now, so if I got it wrong, please correct me David) for AGES!!
The grower that gifted this hoya to David did so in the "pay it forward" school of thought, and is a super generous friend!! Of course, as David is one of the nicest, most generous people that I have come to know in a very long time, if ever, I can't think of anyone more deserving of this hoya! BRAVO David.
Totally thrilled for you. I am sending the most positive hoya vibes your way, and hope that it does nothing but grow like crazy at your place.
Hugs,
S
Beautiful bloom, David! Love the colors!
Karen
Oh, dlambii that is a GLORIOUS plant! It is wonderful to know there are people in this world who believe in paying it forward - especially since I know how generous you have been with others. There seems to be a full-circle thing going on with you - how cool is that!!!!
Here's my Hoya kenejiana that I received in the CoOp a few months ago. The cutting has done well and these little flowers opened up about 3 days ago. I don't think there's any scent, but they're pretty non the less.
I'm a little sad knowing that these could be some of the last blooms for me this season. I'm about to invest in some HO T5 fluorescent lamps to put over my Hoyas this winter. I've never used artificial light before so who knows... maybe I'm in store for some blooms this winter???
That is so COOL, MullettMan! Great photo too.
Ann
Nice photo, Mulletman. Did you check the flowers late at night for fragrance? This one seems to start well after dusk, but after 10pm or so I catch a strong scent from this plant, like mango ice cream.
