Keeping young plants safe from hungry critters?

Chicago Suburbs, IL(Zone 5b)

I have some hungry critters eating some of my flowers, I suspect either deer or rabbits. Are there any aesthetically pleasing ways can I keep my plants safe?

I was just reading that human hair in a muslin bag will deter deer if hung waist level and rabbits if kept lower. I've never tried it. Deer can jump a 7' fence, though none have gone over my 4'.

There are some sprays and things that you can buy (Liquid Fence is one brand, but there are others).

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Found this list of deer/rabbit resistant plants( but of course if they are really hungry....)They also said a mix of rotten eggs, garlic and bad milk sprayed in the gardens help keep them out( haven't tried it yet)
red and blue angel salvia, russian sage, purple coneflower, black eyed susan, poppy, cosmos, butterfly bush, galdiolus, clematis, dianthus, columbine, balloon flower, delphinium, lupines

(Zone 7a)

I've heard of this remedy too but have never tried it either. Don't know if I want to have bad milk and rotten egg smell in my beds! LOL And the human hair thing works only if you critters aren't used to people being around.

The bad milk and rotten eggs might keep you out of the garden along with the deer!
