How deep down do the roots of pampus grass go,I have a six year old pampus that I want to remove,Iv'e been told to set fire to it but it's too close to the fence to do that.
Has any got any idea how hard it would be to dig it out?
Thanx smurfy
Pampus Grass
Smurfy, I watched some being removed last year. I think they had roots close to 2' deep and 3' across. The guys used a backhoe to pull them out and still had some trouble. They told me they were full of snakes.
Hi Smurfy, WeeNel here, AGAIN, if you do set fire to the grass, wait till it has gone dry and brown in the winter time, it will fire up in a flash and be burned out in seconds but keep the hoze turned or just incase, also check you have no hedgehogs etc in the grass as they use it as a winter nesting place if you have any in your area, however on saying to burn it, this is normal for like pruning out the dead and empty center of old clumps of pampas grasses, you would still need to dig out the roots after the fire, but you would at least be able to see where to dig after all the foliage was burned off, I found the best way to do it was to dig a trench around the root spread (large) then cut the middle into sections like dividing a cake, then try remove each part at a time, it took us three days to do it properly and even then the following spring, we were still digging out stragglers, good luck, it ain't for the faint hearted.
Got your mail today re your leaves, will get to work on it over the weekend. WeeNel.
