Show of Pride for the NE Forum

12 shirts have been sold so far (I don't think that includes my 5). $25 in royalties - about $2 a shirt. Maybe we could use that money for a RU sometime to help with the cost of food - that way it would stay in the NE Forum. Eleanor

Welcome Kathy! Stop in any time. Let me ask you - is there one image you conjure up that captures CA gardening or CA nature? Many of us agreed that it's the Fall colors for us and that was our inspiration. That's for the image. For the text - should be something that captures the mood, enthusiasm, habits, etc., of the forum.

Just my 2 pennies. Good luck!

Oh, you would ask me a question like that - I thoroughly lack imagination. It's so varied here that it's hard to do. It's just that I might say sunshine, but some folks up north like the fog. I grow native CA plants and some tropicals, fruit, cactus, etc. (the cactus is for my British husband, who is fascinated by it).

I guess we'd be safe with sunshine, since we do have a lot of it. Plants can be anything - but we're known for citrus and other fruits and nuts and trees. Yep, sun shine and palm trees (NOT my fav) usually makes people think of CA.

BTW, I've been through tornadoes in Ohio, snowed in for three days in Colorado, and I'll take earthquakes any time. They aren't fun, but none of it is. The thing is we don't have them every year. I was born here, so I've been through a lot of them.

I do love those fall colors

Cheers,
Kathleen.

You want it? You got it. California!

California - it's not just about granola anymore!

It's dry and it shakes - but we have Hollywood.

Sorry - I'm a native Californian living in Connecticut - I gotta act out!

OK, which of you cats took my love beads? Mommy needs them to meditate!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Love beads - ROFL, Yankee.
I like the California cheese cows.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

We have snow here and threats of hurricanes and tornedos and ice storms - I'd take an earthquake over all this anyday! 15 seconds and it is over - access the damage and go on with your life. All the warning about the coming storms scare the zen right out of me! On top of it all - it is cold and wet! I don't want to know ahead of time - I just want it over and when it is over - I don't want to have to dry out or clean up!!

PS - my cat says "dude" all the time, but he is a yankee cat.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Spoken by someone who was not in the wrong place at shake time.

Just like you dude. Pronounced: duuuuuuuude.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

LOL AYC. I guess its what you grow up with and are used to dealing with from that old joker mother nature. Cold and snow are only good for one thing now that I have given up sledding and never did go for the whole ice skating thing, always was frozen by the time you walked to the pond anyway. Now its only good for staying inside in front of a nice warm fire and making lists of new plants to order, what to move what to heave out and what to divide or give away. I need the rest anyway after the spring and early summer planting and mulching frenzy. I like fall and spring the best cause they have the best part of two seasons with the added benefit of new color, either spring green or the red and yellows of fall. My house shaking under my feet does not seem like a little thing at all! If you grow up with it, seems normal I guess. Anyway pretty soon with all this global warming we will have california weather here.

Can't do cold and wet.
Ooops, should have said not all of us say duuuuuude. :-) My generation said *itchin' (you fill in the blank).

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

When California is not shaking, baking or burning, it's sliding. I'll take this area any time. Hurricanes are uncommon. Tornadoes very rare. Heat spells last days, not months. We get mini seasons within seasons and the great transitions. What's not to like?

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

It's coooooollllld in the winter. Can't do cold.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

True, and I don't like cold or snow, but compare our number of days below, say 20 degrees against your number of days over 90.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Believe it or not - you get used to cold. The Fall leaves and the bulbs popping up in Spring make it worthwhile as long as you wear long johns and a down coat!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Ah, that I can do. We get a week or so over 90 (and then there's the rare days over 100 like we had last month) and have an ocean breeze even though we're 10 miles inland. You think 20 degrees is cold - to me 50 is!

Nope, I don't get used to it. I turn snarly and nasty and curl up in a ball like a bear. Thankfully, DH hates it, too. We have poppies in spring. Want to keep going? lol

I survived a week in London in November, but only because we were walking everywhere and it wasn't too cold yet. That's about my limit, and I think it's because I was so distracted by what I was seeing. Normal day-to-day stuff would drive me mad - it was dark all the time!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I love winter and snow. It's great for relaxing in bed with a good book or someone who just read one.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Where are you, exactly? I have a good friend in Fallbrook. I lived in Tustin for 17 years before I came to CT. My Dad still lives in Anaheim - so close to Disneyland that we walk there!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Just bought a long sleeve (it's getting chilly soon LOL) brown shirt with Celeste's design but I changed the printing to orange so it would show up.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

But aren't you glad we don't all love it? It would get awfully crowded there!

I just think it's great our country has so much variety and in our state we can visit a lot of without getting on a plane. When DH moved here he was really shocked by some of our landscape. It took a while for his eyes to adjust to views that weren't all soft, rolling green hills (he's from Yorkshire) and the like. Didn't take him long to love it - including the desert.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Yankee, we're in Bonsall, just west of Fallbrook. We're in the river valley and the breeze from Oceanside goes right through our place.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I know it well - drove through there quite often to get to Fallbrook. Do you grow avocados or citrus? My girlfriend lost her trees to the big fire storm 5 years ago - well she lost everything to the storm, actually.

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Welcome to the Northeast Forum Kathleen. I think everyone loves the climate and place that they are familiar with. We certainly do have a big representation of varieties of climates on Dave's Garden. And it's great to hear and see what is growing in someone else's "neck of the woods". Good luck with your tee-shirts. I'm glad the Northeast has been giving you some ideas. It is a fun project to do and our only problem was in choosing so we went with more than one design. Eleanor

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Masatoosits. A place I've longed to visit for close to 50 years. Forebears were from Hingham, Exeter NH, etc beginning with John Leavitt who died in Hingham Nov. 20, 1691. I can't help thinking of that part of our country as being one of the most beautiful. I can handle the cold better than the heat, but around here we don't often get extremes of one or the other. Maybe the reason I'm still here.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes the NW is nice - too much rain though.

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

You know Victor, just like with cor-ten, after awhile the mildew builds up a protective coating, and here we don't tan, we rust. lol

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good way of looking at it!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Balvenie, my dad's family settled in Rhode Island in the 1630s via MA. We must be related somehow! lol Their name was Tefft. I was finally able to visit the spot of the original homestead some years ago and it was beautiful.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Kathleen... I am sorry... didn't really mean to be "mean".... I actually loved being in CA... I am about to go back... please don't feel offended...

but yes I am a bit jealous that you guys in CA have 6 roses flushes.... and I only have 2!!!!

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

Kaperc, that's what I'd love to do also. The Leavitt Family Association has all the old homesteads noted, and an enormous file of descendants. Fun to know where you came from.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Okay, okay - my family was on the Mayflower. Don't like to brag, but you guys started.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Just ordered my T-shirt. Although I truly liked the choices, outstanding choices, I decided to customize my shirt to add my own images...front and back. I chose the black shirt and added my pink caladium to the front, changing the color of the letters to pink. And this collage on the back with the words "My Garden 2007" in pink. I hope it turns out as well as it looked on the prototype.

This is very cool! I must order. One of my phrases even made the cut!!

Yankee cat, You had a tornado in CT??? You must have been thinking of Kansas!;^)

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

No, no - there have been tornedoic winds here twice this summer! This is a scarey place - sometimes. What about those groundhogs? They are like killer bees for gardens!

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Nap, those are beautimous flowers!

Balvenie, the Tefft Family Association managed to save the land of our ancestors from developers with the help of the town and it is now an historical landmark and park. All started by someone finding a bone in their backyard! When I visited RI we uncovered a small cemetery that was covered in brambles. If you get a chance, do visit, it's a wonderful experience.

Victor, my dad's middle name was Bradford - want to guess where it came from. :-) Wouldn't want to count all those descendants! LOL

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

gee, look what you guys accomplish when I'm not hanging around getting in the way! these are really great :0) very nice work, Eleanor!!

I have a question, though. Did we decide to forego the DG logo altogether in favor of just the .com?

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

Jan,
They were 'OK'ed as is so we went with it and you can choose from the 5 designs. They can also be customized. Where have you been - we've missed you and glad you're back. Eleanor

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Jan, as mentioned, I made some changes to the shirt I ordered. It has the same words, but with my own specialization. I think we ought to bring some of our own gardens to our shirts. And it would be so easy to add the DG logo to your shirt. Perhaps on the back, with a picture of one of your roses, and "Jan's Garden 2007" underneath.

Try it. Pick a shirt, any shirt, and click on "customize".

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

thanks, Eleanor. I've been around. just too much work and too little time :0) sound familiar to anyone?

Nancy, I was thinking of getting a second shirt with a collage of my roses. did it cost extra to add a picture on the back? I had been playing with a design back aways.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Yes it does, Jan, but just a couple of extra dollars. Not bad.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I might do one with JB's, slugs, larvae and other attractive garden critters.
