What's Blooming? # 12

Upper Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 5a)

I got Fancy Frills this year but I will probably not see it bloom - it has been beheaded several times. Something bites the bud off, chews on it, and then spits it out!! Eleanor
p.s. - So glad you posted a pic of yours Al so that I now know what it looks like. It is beautiful and so are the other blooms.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Nice butterfly pics aspen. Just monarchs around here right now. I was chasing around this tinly lavender one, but couldn't get close. Keep trying you sun shot - you'll find an angle you like. Don't be afraid of the sun.

Victor - I'll redo my list of echies. Top of my s list. Sundown - yeah it's a bad pic - not much better in person.

Kind of on the fence with Prairie Frost, my Sparkler I have(barely) I like a bit better. This plant is at least growing well.

Okay, I have been from here all the way back to #8, twice. I am looking for a photo someone posted of a planting combo, purple zinnias and something white (I think). Sorry, I don't remember who posted it, but if it was you could you please tell me what zinnias those were? I remember they seemed to be a dark purple, and I loved them.
I just received 'purple prince' in a trade, as a bonus, and am hoping that's what was in your picture.

I don't Al. Neither arse, nor Dahlia.

Wonderful pics as always.

Look harder!

aspen - I've posted a lot of zinnias, but nothing real purple - violet maybe.

Dave - glad to heard you found ME.

First time for night shots. The only way I could get my camera to focus and produce a clear picture was to shine the flashlight on the subject first, allow the camera to focus, then move take the light away and shoot the picture. There has to be an easier way!

I found all kinds of interesting things in the garden tonight. This bb loves my burgundy gallardia so much he's sleeping over.

This nighttime photography really brings out the true colors. I thought 'Dark knight' was all purple with an orange eye.. there's white in there too!

Nice nights shots aspen! Lovely shot of the Cleome.

amazing pics everyone! That speckled Balloon flower was neat. I only have purple. I'm guessing I should extend my selection. I fogot to go out last night with the camera!!! This morning I went out with my coffee and noticed that the Moon Vine bloom did it's thing last night!! How depressing. I wanted to see if it was as fragrant as they said. It was also a full moon - how amazing would that have been!!! I'm going to plant a whole ton of seed next year. I was really disappointed with it's show this year.

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Anita, I have a BUNCH of bubble envelopes going with people's names and requests for different types of balloons. My favorite thing in the world is sharing my seeds with others. So, if you'd like to send me your address via D-Mail and let me know which types you would like, I will be happy to mail you some once I can harvest them. They are not ripe yet because they are still blooming but once they are....wow, do I have some mailings to do *lol*. I have the blue, double blue, pink, dwarf blue and dwarf white. My 2 absolute favorites this year were the dwarf white and double blue. The dwarf white would look GREAT as a border plant because it has such big flowers for a little plant. Just blooms it's head off :)

aspen, I have said in an earlier thread that the flashlight method is what I use. You have to use some kind of light to help the camera focus, or else set it at manual focus at a known focal distance (say, the length from your fingertips to your elbow) and just shoot from that distance. But you need a flashlight to get around anyway, so why not just use that?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Is that the secret? Geez wish i'd have known sooner, really had a hard time getting these. I do have "Nightlandscape" and "Night Portrait" settings along with "Fireworks" and several others.

Great night shots Aspen. Whatever you are doing to get them its working really well. I hope that slimer was toast shortly after you got his mug shot...ewwww. You should frame that cleome pic, just wonderful.
I have trouble keeping up with all these great sots people, gorgeous butterflies, dahlias, a new to me plant- Balsam, all wonderful including the pretty blue sky. :)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

the balsam is new to me also.... does it spread quickly.... and is it hard to get rid of if it does?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

For us it was invasive as it self-seeded much too much. We ended up pulling it out year after year.

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

I'm not sure if it's invasive in zone 5 yet because this is the first year I grow it and it's in a window box. I plan to collect every seed so I won't really know until next year when I put some in the ground. Trumpet vine seems to be invasive everywhere but my yard *lol*. I have had one for 3 years and it hasn't flowered once!!! I WISH some of my things would get a little invasive but they don't. About the only "invasives" I can think of in my yard would be: Campanula Puctata, Obedient Plant, Evening Primrose and I'm finding my Bee Balm to be quite the little invasive plant. I just "weed" them out though when the babies try to take over too much *lol*

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

It takes a while (3-4 years) for a trumpetvine to bloom. They don't like being trimmed either. But wait till the hummers see it in bloom.
