Oh no! Cucumber beetles are everywhere!

Tucson, AZ

I went out the other day to try and pollinate s ome of my pumpkins and in every single blossom, there are 2 cucumber beetles, stuck together mating. How can I get rid of the little buggers before they lay their eggs and really mess up my garden? I need help quick!

If nothin' else, pull 'em off and squash them! Or stick them in a jar and put the lid on, or something--step 1 has gotta be, get them away from your plants!

After that, dunno.... :) You need an expert, or at least someone who has already grown pumpkins, which is not me.

I'm on the East side, dangerously close to Mesquite Valley Growers... went in there yesterday for a pack of bean seeds, came out with a rosemary plant, a jasmine vine, a trellis, and a 6 pack of red peppers. Oh, and two kinds of bean seeds and some leek seeds. This sort of thing has gotten to be a nasty habit... :)

Rotenone/pyrethrum bug spray. It's organic. Many online garden supply places sell it.

Squash bugs carry bacterial wilt. Kill them, kill them all! I lost all my squash to bacterial wilt this year - first year I didn't spray at all, and it'll be the last year, as well.

Go out in the afternoon and pull every open male flower off your vines, throw them into a bag, then spray insecticide in the bag and seal it up before you throw it away. By then, pollination for the day is a done deal and the flowers don't open again.

Check for bees in the flowers first, just to make sure, but they're usually gone by afternoon.
