Garden Happenings 8/25/07 thru.....?

Kernville, CA

Hi Everyone, I made a post for today earlier, but I guess it didn't go thru. This thread will continue for a few days or longer, so we can more easily follow each others garden happenings and talk.

Mary - I have never heard of Incredible corn; I'm going to have to try it sometime. I left my onions in the ground for a couple weeks, then I wondered if the heat would make them hot tasting or dry them out, so I pulled them.

LTilton - Hope your pumpkin takes. And I hope my pumpkins take, because I only have a few plants of Jaradale (blue pumpkin). I just transplanted them. I have yet to learn about hand pollinating.

Indy - How big is your garden?

I took my newly planted seeds and seedlings outside in the warm shade this morning. I use a peat moss, perlite, dirt mixture in 3" pots. The seelings are Pak Choi, India Mustard, Broad London leeks, Russain kale. Pak Choi and India Mustard will be a first for me.

Now I'm starting to see several more baby pumpkin flowers, so some should take. Question is whether they have time to mature.

Did nothing in the garden today, driven out by swarms of divebombing mosquitoes, breeding in the trenches full of water.

Tomorrow, I should pick the plums, what few there are this year after the spring frost.

LT - When is your frost date? Mine is Nov15. I plan to extend the season with clear plastic and dark colored buckets full of water for my tomatoes (because not 1 tomatoe yet - long story) And maybe for my pumpkins and winter squash. I'm going to go swimming in the river now; a rejuvenating way to end the day, and for a better nights sleep.

Around Oct 15. So I really don't have all that much time, two months till Halloween at the most, and I think growth will be slower as the days get short.

Today I plan to make organic pesticide. Its basil, cayenne pepper, a litlle dish soap, vinegar, and garlic. Tons of little iridescent bugs have eaten the Mexican Rose plant. I'm surprised at how suddenly tons of bugs appear, and how much destruction they can do so quickly.

LT - What kind of pumpkins? I have never grown the blue pumpkin Jaradale. In fact, I've never gotten a pumpkin out of my garden! I had a young Kangaroo Rat in the garden last year, and he got hungry for pumpkin.

My pumpkin is Full Moon, a white c maxima.

I'm not going for giant pumpkins, just jackolanterns. If these are too big, I'll go back to Lumina.

Well today I had to butcher my Mexican Rose plants, because they looked like locusts came thru them. Then I poured Vinegar, Cayenne, Soap water all over the soil where I saw the bugs. Pest management is my least favorite thing to do in the garden.

LT - Full Moon sounds like the perfect jack-o-lantern. What color are white pumpkins as they grow?

Glen Ellyn, IL(Zone 5b)

Sort of off-white, a lot like the orange ones. But these turn whiter when the others turn oranger.
