"Not that there's anything wrong with it......." ....another quote from that show you don't watch....:)

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Electronic waste? Is that what you get when you turn on the TV?

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Yeah.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Lots of it, Dave!! Good point!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

We have a very small TV. It used to be right by the bed, taking up valuable space that could be used by seeds, computers, plants, birdfeeders, etc. And we don't watch it all that often. So I bought us one of those corner TV mount thingies, and my DD put it up for me. Now the TV is so far away we have to find the remote, and we can't quite read the clues on Jeopardy!. We always swore that this was our last TV.

Candyce, my best friend's birthday is June 29. It's a very special day. :)

Carrie, you're too funny. You keep a birdfeeder on your nightstand?

Went to the Bronx Zoo yesterday with a group from work. Got a bus ride and all the options at the Zoo for $15! My favorite thing was watching the Tigers having enrichment time. Sasha did "tricks" for meatballs. The "tricks" are designed for the keeper to get a good look at every part of the Tiger - paws, teeth, tummy, etc. without annoying the cat. I am very jealous because Sasha would roll over on command and I can't get Wallingford to do that! But then, again, Wally does play the piano . . . and the Tiger doesn't. I took a picture of the Praying Mantis on the Merry-Go-Round for Andy. All the "horses" are bugs! So much fun!

Great - love the zoo. And its neighbor - the Botanical Garden.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I like the Botannical Garden better - just hadn't ever been to this zoo. The San Diego Zoo is my idea of a zoo.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I love the Bronx Zoo! I haven't been in ages. Cat, that has got to be the biggest praying mantis I've ever seen. Good thing he's not real.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, we are going to NYC for US Thanksgiving - I guess there is not much point checking out the botanical gardens then . . . . howevver the zoo was great last year on "Black Friday" - the rest of the city was recovering from Thanksgiving dinner or starting Christmas shopping. After pouring rain on the Macy Parade, the next day was bright and clear.

David and I went to the Bronx zoo for the first time - hardly anyone was there! And the underbrush had died back, so lots of great views of the animals. Some exhibits were closed - but that's okay. Best zoo I have been to was in Chester, England.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I would not rule out the NYBG. There's always something nice in the Conservatory. If the train show is already set up, it will be packed but it is really worth seeing.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Train show? Like model trains?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - all the scenery is made from plant material.

Here's a photo of 'St. Patrick's Cathedral'.

OMG! That is AMAZING! Man - we have to see this . . . .

We are only going because we want our 20 year old daughter to see NYC (a world-class city) before she returns to Canada in 2009.

Of course, she will only go if the boyfriend comes along - so I figure it will cost about $1000 for 4 days. - And we still won't have enough for a Broadway musical . . . .

I love NYC - especially the museums. Definitely want to see the Botanical Gardens in prime time . . . but I don't need to see the Statue of Liberty, etc. again.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Here's another. The Hell's Gate railroad bridge over the East River.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

That's amazing - hey, Victor . . . maybe you know the answer to this . . . is it possible to drive to NYC - then park the car someplace safe and take a train into the city?

It will cost us about $400 for all four of us to take the bus from Springfield to NYC.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Are you staying over at a hotel?

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Who was it that had the youth hostel?

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

It's Hosteling International. DH and I have life memberships. The hostel is on Amersterdam and 103 street in Upper West Manhattan. Couldn't possibly afford a Manhattan Hotel!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

So is that where you're staying for Thanksgiving?

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

At the Hostel, of course!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

So back to your question - are you looking to drive to somewhere and leave your car for a couple of days and take a subway or other commuter train to the city? If so, the answer is yes.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Cat - what a nice photo of the praying mantis & the carousel! Don't you just love carousel animals? These are wonderful!

Victor - that Cathedral photo is awesome too!

I've been "off com" for several days while our company was here, and it's nice to see what has been added for good catch-up reading and viewing!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Victor's bridge reminded me: on a recent 'college tour' trip to U. Texas at Austin, we took a boat cruise on the Colorado river - not The Colorado River but another one - to see bats! Apparently they built a new bridge in the 70's or 80's and left room for expansion in the construction and it turns out the expansion cracks are just the right size for BATS! We saw literally millions of bats swarming out from under the bridge at sunset to eat two bazillion tons of mosquitoes and other tasty treats. My DD #2 has the pix on her camera... Remarkable and unforgettable.

Michaela, you have GOT to see the train show if it's up. It's better than the Thanksgiving Macy's Parade. Hey, I lived on Amsterdam Ave. at 99th street for five years. It's where I lived when my son was born. It's a great neighborhood.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Harper, we used to go to a Chinese Restaurant on 103rd and Bway all the time.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I used to eat at the Viva pizza place, then cross the street to buy groceries at The Health Nut. When were you there? I was there in the late 90's.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I was there (125 street) from the late 80's until 2004. The Chinese restaurant was the Broadway Cottage. Couldn't remember it before.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

So these are restaurants you recommend? Regarding the commute - yes, I think it would be cheaper to drive to someplace - leave the car and take a commuter train into the city - Any ideas how I can find out about this? Maybe if I google NY transportation?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I doubt the Broadway cottage is even there anymore. I believe the had changed hands a few times since I used to go. You can Google New Jersey Transit or Metro-North - they are both commuter rails. PATH is another one that comes from Jersey. I know nothing about their parking but all would get you into the city. Metro-North can be picked up from CT or Westchester County.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Michaela, I,ve been thinking that next time in I'll drive to Greenwhich, CT. The train (Metro
North) is cheap from there & parking is free.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You can leave the car for a couple of days, Dave?

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Not positive about overnight. I'll ask my Greenwich connection & get back.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks guys! Yes - if you can find out, that would be WONDERFUL, Dave47 :-)

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

She was out sick today, Michaela. I'll check tomorrow.
