My plants were healthy and going strong, we've had a very dry season so we've been religiously watering, but on Monday we had strong storms and about 3 inches of rain in 5 hrs. the plants were still ok as of yesterday morning, and I'd enjoyed a few days off from watering :). Last night when I got home from work the plants were dead. 1 plant is completely wilted and has no hope, the zucchini on it has shriveled in a day. The other plant may and little hope to save a bit of the plant, as leaves were quite wilted but the zucchini, though small still had good color, and the part of the plant that were growing the zucchini still was barely surviving. Our season should be winding down her in a 3 weeks or so, but I feel my zucchini season was cut short. It was so strange though, as nothing changed except getting the rain water rather than hose water.
Any ideas what happened? I'd almost think someone maliciously did this, but we have a privacy fence noone can get into.
what happened to my zucchini?
Sounds like you encountered the dreaded squash vine borer. If so you will find the plant almost completely destroyed at the base as that thing eats the vine from the inside out.
