DAILY PICS- VOL.18

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

AT LAST!!
I guess I have to face the fact, that I'm only going to be a late summer stop for the hummers. We always get them in September. This year I planted a new flower bed, just for them and STILL they don't really show up until now. I'm happy that I'll have at least 4 or 5 weeks of the show though!

Congratulations Mrs Ed! Very nice pic too!!

BTW, Whats the beautiful vine growing in your photo?

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Pell,
That is the Cardinal Climber Vine. It starts blooming in August in this area. It is a tropical vine though, so first frost and it is history. Here's a picture of the whole bed. If this isn't an invite for Humming Birds, I don't know what is!!!

Just ordered this Honeysuckle for the Hummingbirds for next year.

Pelle: I have that honeysuckle and it's the first place the hummers showed this summer. I see them there every day while it's blooming - which is nearly all summer. It sometimes goes through a "rest" in August.
Here's the hummingbird's view. :)

Oh cool!! Thats beautiful! Thanks so much for showing me your photo of it!

If it has a rest period for me in August thats fine because the Trumpetvines are blooming like crazy in August.

Thanks again Deb! :-)

BTW, when does it start blooming for you?

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Pelle: This year it was in nearly full bloom in early May.

Marlton, NJ

Oh my gosh thats great!! Thanks again Deb!

How dare those little stinkers avoid your shangri-la? That is a beautiful vine, MrsEd and a great picture, too.
Love the colors in the the honeysuckle.

OOOOOO, pretty honeysuckle. :adds to wishlist:

I spent about an hour outside last night watching a single female using the feeder, then off to the sweet autumn clematis, then perch in a tree… then repeat. Twice she chased others off. Looks like she's claimed it as hers!

Here's a close up of the flower on the Cardinal Climber. I saw a hummer visit every single bloom the other day!

Meanwhile, back at the sunflower patch…

The goldfinches have been very chatty and hungry.

It looks like he is going through a molting stage. Guess it's from all of the hot weather we have been having.

LOL, definitely molting. They look so raggedy this time of year. Nice pic Marilyn!

Fellsmere, FL(Zone 9b)

Thanks, it's been hard to get any bird pictures this summer. Everytime I try to slip out to take a picture they fly off.

Marlton, NJ

I know. You have to really sit out there and wait for them to come back and with the heat of the summer (especially in Fla.) its too uncomfortable to manage that. :-) If you do it enough times you'll notice they come back quicker and quicker.

But soon your weather will be getting more comfortable.

The cardinals still look bad.

The grackles don't look much better. I had not seen any grackles for almost a month. Then never over two at a time all summer. Today eight showed up to check everything out. They only stayed about five minutes.

This morning I found a branch that had blown out of one of the oak trees and thought it would make a nice change in the background. I placed it close to where I feed. Later in the day our neighborhood sparrow flock(which has greatly grown in number the last three weeks) swept in to clean up everything. I got this pic.

Very nice pic of the BJ's Marilyn!!

My gosh is his leg stuck like that Dave?? I've never seen anything like that. So sad but it doesn't seem to be affecting his abilitys at all.

Thanks Resin.

Yes Pelle, a sad situation but it's otherwise looking happy and healthy. I was pleased to hear the bird doctor's prognosis.

Marlton, NJ

LOL, "Calling Doctor Resin.. Doctor Resin..Emergency, Come Right Away"

LOL, Sorry guys I couldn't resist throwing in the "Bewitched" line. :-)

I guess I can always count on the collared doves to show up for feed.

Same here Frank. When no other birds are around you can bet the house the doves will be there. Nice pic.

There are now a lot of sparrows in the flock. This is a small part of them.

There are so many sparrows they even scare the squirrels.

The cardinals are even keeping an eye on the sparrows. I thought this cardinal had some weird markings. Then I realized it was a shadow from one of the branches.

Thumbnail by

I have only had two cardinals the last few days. Here is the other one.

Thumbnail by

The sparrows are giving me an opportunity to try some new things with my photography. This quartet was drinking from the bath but they looked like they were singing "Cool Water".
