Paige, that is one cool cat! Did it make it?

Just finished checking out that link Konkreteblond. That is one beautiful moth. So are you raising one of those right now? Going to be a beauty. Thanks for sharing that.

Leslie, I'm gonna have to bust you for skimming my post. ;) lol (I won't tell anyone tho because I do it too) It's a Cecropia cat that I was trying to raise but they all died. :( I would love to raise them but I actually don't have anything they eat close enough and don't want to hunt thru the neighborhoods again. lol

I saw a huge Hummingbird moth out tonight crawling all the way inside a Datura bloom. Couldn't get my camera in time tho.

Ah, those are hard to take pics of Paige.. I have probs taking pics bc not enough light. Usually when I see them its past dark. One of these days I might have the right gear and timing.. :-) HBMoths are so cool!

Abilene, TX(Zone 7b)

Oops sorry Paige. I am sorry but don't know what skimming your post means. LOL. Can you let me know so I don't do it again?

We've all "skimmed" or "speed-read" a time or two, lol. No biggie girlfriend.

Heehee, Leslie got caught at speed reading.......don't worry, I've done it once or twice. lol

Here's my Luna baby, he's 20 days old and maybe half grown. He's getting fat and boy, is he slow, I don't think I've seen him move. I sure hope he makes it. Kudos to DonnaB, she's raised many silkmoth cats and I think they don't do well in captivity, at least mine haven't.

Looks great Roxanne! Maybe it's ready to pupate soon.. I so hear you about those and some other kinds of cats.. They just don't take to captivity. It is awesome Donna was able to release so many, and equally so if anyone can raise any to maturity. Their odds are still less in the wild. Especially the non poisonous cats.

I think it is very important to raise some of everything we get in out gardens for whatever we can learn from it first hand. Even if we leave them to nature after we get the records. I am getting the nerve to do it with all that flies through here little by little.

Just lucked out with this Tersa Sphinx, finding it so close to time to morph. I posted it in the dailies too, but it fits here too..

About 2 1/2 " long>

What luck Deb to find a Tersa!!! Where did you find it? That guy would really blend in with mulch.

Rox~
Up this thread I posted a pic of it as a cat almost a week ago... lol! (I'm not gonna say 'busted' rofl! See leslie?, we all do this.)

I found it on a penta plant on the deck. The cats are so hard to find on in-ground pentas, they have so many places to hide. Plus like you said, they blend in with mulch. I figure keeping some plants near or on your observation area might increase your chances of finding one or 2 yourself.

This evening we went to help my DD move some furniture and I noticed her cannas were chewed on pretty good, so naturally I scouted to see if I could find any brazilian skippers. Sure enough I found 2 good chrysalids, and one not so good. One of the 2 would vibrate rapidly in the rolled up leaf every time I tried to have a look, lol. It kinda freaked me out at first. Man, those little guys are v e r y quick!

Here is one of the 2 good ones I brought home... almost 2" long>

Deb....Thanks for the photo of the Brazilian Skipper chrysalis!!! I've been keeping tabs on the cats rolled up in canna leaves. Figured I'd leave them on the leaves until they got bigger and now that I know they will form a chrysalis in the leaf too...well that makes it much easier. Will look for those and bring them in to raise. Also lost count on the number of Brazilian Skipper eggs on the cannas in the front yard. I've only seen one butterfly around them and she's been a very, very busy egg layer!!! There must be at the very least 100 eggs all over those plants :o)

Here's my cannas...I have a large of clump on each side of my driveway...so you know she's having a field day!!!

That looks fantastic Cat! Cannas don't grow here very well, but I guess I can keep trying. Check it out in a few days and look through the rolled leaves again. The particularly live ones are very strong. The leaf could even get away it vibrates so quickly. It can be alarming if one isn't prepared for it. Like one of those little gag hand buzzers, with sound effects, lol!

btw Cat, Have you added your new pics to bugfiles yet? I know it's time I need to go through mine to add what they don't have in there. We've had a few new things lately.

These sulphurs are funny little guys.. They make a 'U" and then start wiggling out horizontally from the unattached end until it is like a leaf. The movement is so unpatterned and erratic, yet what forms around it is perfect.

Fly.....since you started this thread, how about doing a part 2? Even with DSL it is loading slow due to the pics I suppose.
I am really enjoying all of the great experiences that everyone is sharing on this thread.

Rox - Awesome thread! Love all the wonderful shots of cats here! Many of you should add your photos to BugFiles!

Nothing going on here. Finally got some rain tonight. The only butterflies I am seeing are the White Peacocks, but I've not seen any cats. I see an occasional Sulphur and Skipper, but that's about it! Tons of dragonflies, baby frogs (they seem to be everywhere!!), and so many Lizards that I wonder if that is why I don't have butterflies or cats! LOL!

I've been skimming, but not able to keep up! Way to much activity here to stay on top of it all! Glad to see Paige posting again! I am hoping as Fall approaches and the weather cools off and butterflies migrate that I will start seeing more. Still no blooms on my Maypops! They are beyond out of control. I've cut them back once about a month ago and they are everywhere again. Not a cat in sight. I have tons of MW everywhere. Many seeds that blew around my yard have produced plants. Unfortunately, the ratio of MW bugs has also increased. I've lost the battle trying to keep them under control. So, I am enjoying the butterflies here on this forum by all of you! Keep those great photos coming! :-)

Becky, I just hate to hear you are not getting much butterfly or hummer action. That is just not right as much work as you put into your garden for them. And I would sure think Florida would be a haven for BF's. Maybe your yard just got this year off and next year you will be inundated. About your passion vine, I have thought of it many times since I had the passion vine shortage. Everything is okay now as three more made chrysalid and I only have two big ones left and one little baby so think I am going to be okay. I was just questioning on another thread about how much trouble the vines are. I have been "warned" by a man at the local nursery about how invasive they are. Would you consider yours invasive or just a zealous grower? And do you just prune it occasionally and it stays within reason? I planted two right together just because I had no where else to put them and now I get a little worried about them taking over everything. Of course they have a whole fence to take over as far as I am concerned but will they take over anything else? As I have stated I have trouble growing things here the soil is so hard and clay, just like a clay pot when dry, so I find it hard to believe I would have trouble with anything taking over but just want to be sure. And sorry don't mean to take over the thread, just curious.

And thanks for making me feel better folks by letting me know others did the same thing I did. I will try very hard in the future to avoid that mistake and read thoroughly every post. LOL.

Anyone know what this guy will be when he grows up?

I've never seen one that close, but it looks like a Yellow Bear, the cat of the Virginia Tiger Moth.

Great pic, what camera and lens are you using?

Thanks FG...going to google that name now!!
Saving up for a digital SLR but for now enjoying playing with my Canon S3 IS - that shot and this one was in super macro mode with a 20+ filter
