Aloe Plant

Antioch, TN

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to save this sorry little guy? It is kinda broken looking...should I put a piece in water to root?

Not in water.
Over watering kills more plants than underwatering.
Can you peel off the nasty looking leaves and still leave the plant intact?

Well all the leaves.fell off when I tried to repot it...should I put the leaves in dirt? Keep the root in dirt?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Which leaves fell off? If it was the dried up looking ones I'd just throw them away. If it was one of the healthy looking ones, I'd go post in the Cacti & Succulents forum, most succulents you need to let the cutting callus over first before you put it in the soil to root, but I'm not sure if aloes would be the same or not.

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

Aloes, like a well drained soil, lots of sun but not like baked in the sunshine, if you can, take it from the pot, very carefully, and peel off the dead leaves, add new soil which has added fine grit or sand to the compost, replant the stem/roots into the new soil mix and give it a drink of water from the base, that is, put the plant pot into a basin of water till the soil changes colour to let you know the soil has sucked up enough water to wet it, let the pot drain and place the plant in good light but not full hot sun, these plants do shed bottom leaves as normal, but yours looks like they have been sat in/on wet compost and rotted away rather than the natural dying proses they do when older, you have done the right thing by top dressing the soil with gravel as this helps to prevent the problem you have. too wet soil on the foliage, misting the plant every now and again helps so long as the leaves dont sit on wet or cold soil, Good Luck.
