It's my opinion that all the pictures and comments that are not specifically about S. ionantha need to be removed from the S. ionantha entry. S. ionantha is a specific plant, not a category encompassing a lot of different plants. The way it's handled now is as if it were an entry called simply "Rose" and everything anybody deems to be a rose is put into that entry.
I do believe, based on mystic's post, that there are plans to make that an entry for the specific plant S. ionantha, and somehow remove everything that is not S. ionantha. Am I correct, mystic?

I agree we should have a place to showcase the NOID hybrids, but it doesn't need to be on the S. ionantha entry. I wouldn't have a problem at all with a "Saintpaulia - African Violet" entry that contained no species or cultivar information. I actually think that would be a good idea, but I do see the reasoning to not have a catch-all entry, too. So, I am sort of on the fence about that.
I decided to go look at the PF listing for S. ionantha and must admit ... it does make it very confusing with all those photo's of different AV's showing up there! I'm assuming the first photo is the one that is S. ionantha?? I am a novice at all these registered - named AV's but if that first pic is the actual plant, why have so many other photo's of AV's been added to that file?
S. ionantha is a species AV, meaning it grows in the wild. Who knows how it started, but it seems that was the place chosen to post all the pictures of and comments about AVs that someone didn't know the name of.
Thanks Rain ... I am such a novice, I thought maybe it was the "original" AV that all others came from!
It may have been the first one located. I have read it, but honestly can't remember the whole story of when, how, where, and exactly what was first discovered. I think Wikipedia probably has an entry that would tell it all.
If I'm remembering right, I think a lot of the modern hybrids are descended from S. ionantha... but I think trailing varieties have some input from another species, and maybe the same is true for miniature varieties. ?
Here's the Wiki on it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saintpaulia_ionantha It says there are 6 species of AV, one of which is ionantha. Ah, here it is. Per that article, "The genus Saintpaulia, and original species S. ionantha, were scientifically described by J. C. Wendland in 1893." So I guess S. ionantha was the first one discovered.
I'm just repeating what I'm reading, so nobody get the idea that I know what I'm talking about! ;o) LOL
Edited, because I had a momentary loss of spelling ability.

RainGazer yes that's it exactly. The only thing that should be on the entry is the true plant not all the others. Most of those entries came about when PF first started and there wasn't separate entries for all the cultivars etc. They where all lumped on one entry . There where just species entries that where really catch alls for folks that didn't know the correct species of there plant etc. Those are the entries we are trying to do away with. I'm not talking about plants that have a true species name listed. As for your NOID ones the best place to post those photos are right here on this forum. As for moving the comment on the entry we can't do that. We can't change the order of them.
Pretty much all the comments are about Saintpaulia in general, not S. ionantha. The comments mention 20, 30, and more, different kinds of AVs in all different colors. That has nothing to do with S. ionantha. Will the comments that don't relate to S. ionantha specifically be deleted, mystic?
RainGazer I think it was your report asking about that entry that I sent to Terry. I'm sure we will try to do some kind of clean up on the entry just not sure what and when. I haven't looked at all the photos. Some may even have the real names in there captions where we could move them to the right entries.
It was my report. Thank you for sending it to her. :o) We really sincerely appreciate you working right beside us through this whole process (and you, too Joan!)
I do understand that this was a valuable entry in the beginning times of the PF. And again, I think it could still be very useful to just remove the species ionantha from that entry and leave it as a plain Saintpaulia entry. Then there could be a new entry created for S. ionantha. There is such a mass quantity of NOID AVs that a seperate entry for them may indeed be warranted.
But, the important thing is that S. ionantha get its own entry. All the cultivars in the PF have their own separate entry, and all the species should have the same.
I know that as administrators for the entire site, not just the AV forum, you don't take kindly to moving comments and pictures just because someone asks you to, which is actually something I'm very pleased about. That's the way it should be. But in this situation, for it to be an accurate entry, which was the point of this whole process, those comments and pictures need to be separate from the S. ionantha entry, however that may be best accomplished.
I'll look through those pictures this evening, if you want me to, and send you information on any that have a cultivar or species name.
Thanks again, mystic!
I agree something needs to be done with the entry just not sure what. Lets see what Terry says. I looked at the pictures none have the names. I removed my own photos from the entry so that cut it down some. :)
I saw your picture. It was a lovely AV! :o)
Thanks! :o)
I would want any photo's and comments of mine removed from someplace they were not supposed to be!
Now it will be easy to upload new photos and i can't seem to find the time................we will have to push one another to get this done....................plus we all have wonderful pictures of other gesneriads.............snow said that when the time came, she would help me with the first ones..................we need episicas, Kohlerias, sinningias, streps and for sure avs...........and we are the ones with the pics...............
I do not have many AV's; but, will do my part. Most likely in the fall or winter. It is starting to get cooler here on the Plateau. My leaves are falling. This is unusual. We have had a strange spring and summer. Freezes, draught and high temps.

It has been the weirdest weather ever here...............nothing but rain all summer long................
We had a four day freeze in April. I have had a hard time getting my annuals to bloom. Sporadic blooms even though I feed them blooming fertilizer. These are my standard annuals that I plant every year.
