Plant Files Sign Up A-Z

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

This is for keeping track of sign ups in our african violet Plant Files correction effort.

Adding this link as to how to make corrections in Plant Files by Raingazer.

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/762864/

I checked and the files starting with E-I-Q-U-Y-Z are easy as they contain fewer numbers. Don't anyone sign up for 'X' as there are none. So if anyone wants to sign up for a letter please feel free to do so.
********************************************************************************************************

Guess what everyone? Check this out. We are DONE! Can you believe it? Sincere gratitude to a phenomenal team for an outstanding accomplishment. All 1,750 african violet Plant Files are now completed.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Details....

We're trying to verify or add the registered description as a "note" or comment to each entry. We'll use that as a reference to verify or add to the description checkboxes for bloom, foliage, etc.

If you have the First Class software, you can use the "copy to clipboard" button in the entry and then paste the description into the comment field.

People who don't have access to the FC database have been teaming up with those who do... one person entering in the registered description as a comment, the other person going along and verifying or adding to the checkbox lists for the entry.

For bloom color, I think the consensus is to list the dominant color (or two in some cases).

Some requests from admin...

Please report any errors by using the "report an error" button at the top of the PF entry.

Please also report any duplicate entries you come across.

OK, what else? I'm running around like the proverbial chicken this morning and might not be back online for a few days... I'll check in when I can, and I'll be cheering everyone on! :-)

Jan posted on the other thread that she's moving on to the M's to insert descriptions. I posted a link on that thread to this one, but thought I'd go ahead and tell you. Jan's hard at work, you know! :o)

I am going to start filling in details on the ones Jan has done. For now, please put me down for J and K. I'll report back when I get those done.

Please put Gail and me down for F, G, and H.

I've finished the details on J and K. Put me down for L and M as well. :o)

(Zone 1)

You Ladies are AWESOME!!

Your efforts are much appreciated!

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

M's are finished.There is 3 snowrose and I can't find info on.

I'm going to move on to the N's .

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

N's are finished with descriptions.I'll move on to the O's.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Man, I can't believe how great this is going! You guys are fantastic.

Crossville, TN(Zone 6b)

I can help. I don't have the AV society CD but would love to help.
Linda

Hi Linda! Thank you for offering to help! I'm not sure what letters are both completed with descriptions and don't have someone working on the details, but I'm in the process of finding out. Please read the guidelines we've come up with, so you'll know what you're getting yourself into. ;o) It's the link Snowrose posted in the first post of this thread, above the alphabetical list. As soon as I figure out which letter is open at this point, I'll steer you toward it, if you still want to help. :o)

In the meantime, if you have any pictures of AVs that are a good representation of the cultivar, please upload those. So many cultivars don't have any pictures at all, and we need them to really round out the PF. :o)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Snow or Rain...................I volunteered to do the descriptions for P and T....................do you still want me to?????????????? I did it on the progress report...............I am NOT begging (LOL)
I finished the F, G and H

Yes, Gail, please do go ahead and start the P's and T's. I sent Snow an update for this list this morning and I forgot to add that in. I'll dmail her right now.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Rain, don't be surprised that in the H's there are a lot not in my database but i am sure they have them..........mystic said not to worry about it right now........just leave them blank and we will worry later about looking them up elsewhere..........most are by Pittman so they may be new and my database is not updated...............
Amy, how long will you give me to complete the P's and T;s.............I have a friend coming in tomorrow but she has lots to do in Rockport without me.................

Gail, don't give up doing something you need or want to do just to work on this. We're really moving much more quickly than I ever expected that we would. I'm working on M, G, and H right now. Go ahead and spend time with your friend! We'll hit the P's and T's whenever you're ready, and in the meantime, I'm working behind Jan, too. :o)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I will get it done before the weekend is over.....................starting right now................let me go see how many that is..................before i start..........

That sounds fine to me! :o)

Crossville, TN(Zone 6b)

Rain, I think I can do it. Flower color is in question but i think I can work thru it properly.
Linda

Just put the main flower color. If it's "light pink ruffled star/blue and yellow fantasy, rose eye, white and green edge" then you would only select "Pale Pink" as the bloom color. It can get a bit confusing, but just focus on the main color.

Light pink has to be checked as Pale Pink, and some of the other colors don't have an exact match either. Orchid gets checked as Violet/Lavender, etc.

This is what has helped me decide. Think about searching for African Violets by bloom color. If you really wanted a blue bloom, would you be happy to find the one I typed above? Probably not. You'd want to find that one if you were searching for Pale Pink. Consider if you looked at that bloom to describe it to someone who couldn't see it, what is the first color you notice, or what color covers the largest percentage of the petals. Does that help any?

Linda, go ahead and do the H section http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/finder/cultivars.php?sname=African%20Violets&choice=H , if you'd like. I'm not quite to that one yet. It's a smaller section, so not completely overwhelming (like the R's I chose to start with!! Whew!! LOL).

Crossville, TN(Zone 6b)

Ok, I will start within the hour.
Linda

Great! Thanks so much, Linda! Please feel free to post any questions you have and we'll help you. :o)

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

As an infrequent visitor the the AV forum, I just want to let you all know I think it's wonderful that you are undertaking this project.

Thank you so very much.

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

I sure wish I had the smarts to help you all with this.I wouldn't even begin to know what to do or how to do it and I sure would hate to mess anything up : ( .I do have a few blooming now so maybe I can at least upload some pics? I know I sure do appreciate you all too in taking on this task : )

I think that's a fabulous idea, Nancy!! Please do upload your photos. See, that's something I can't help with. I can't grow 'em like y'all do, so my blooming AV pics are very few and far between. Pictures are something that most everyone on this board posts all the time, and it's no more difficult to upload one to the PF than it is to upload one in a post.

(Zone 1)

LOL Nancy .... I feel the same way. I feel so bad that there's nothing I can do to help with this project! I have uploaded a couple of pic's to PF but don't remember many AV's. I will have to do that when my named ones are blooming!

Again .... to all of y'all who are helping with this effort of so many corrections - APPLAUSE! And, Many Thanks!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I posted this on the Progress thread but thought I would post here as well. Joan is in agreement.

***********************************************************************************************

Hi all....big thanks to everyone for getting so much done so quickly. If there is something I have missed or needs to be changed or added in the A-Z sign ups, please let me know as I want to be sure it is up to date.

If a letter has been completely done (description and details) then I think I should post that in the list so we can keep track easily at a glance. Please let me know.

My latest update; I have the letter 'S' done with descriptions and about halfway with the details.

What do you think of posting in the list about even partial completion like noting descriptions are completed, and when both descriptions and details are done, then noting completion of both? That might help. What do you think?

Please let me know what has been completed for any given letter so I can add the progress and we will know at a glance where we are. Thank you!

Emporia, KS(Zone 5b)

Hi Snowrose, I finished D and L so those are done. I will be working on N next. No point in starting while the little demon...I mean angel...is awake, though. lol

1. Hawaiian Pearl (S. Sorano) Semidouble-double ivory star/dark lavender-rose band. Dark green. Standard
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/131291/

The Word "Band" should I check off edge?

2. Halo's Aglitter (8243) 07/28/1995 (S. Sorano) Single pink sticktite star/red sparkle edge. Medium green, plain, pointed. Standard http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/131288/

No checkbox for sparkle.

Linda

Way to go, cjo! You're moving fast! :o)

Hi Linda!

I have not been checking "edge" for the word "band", because I've seen some that have both band and edge in the description, so I took them to be two different traits.

We don't have a checkbox for sparkle, so just like for banded, you have to simply ignore it. Too bad, because I really like the sparkle and that could potentially be a deal-breaker for me in some situations. :o(

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

cjolene - so you did the details on 'L'?

RDT - Thank you! Hawaiian Pearl check off 'edged'. Halo's Aglitter check off 'edged'.

Does that mean I should go back and add in 'edged' for all the ones that said banded?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Rain...only if you want to. Since the description is there, people will be able to read it for themselves. Maybe later? Don't want you to be discouraged. Only so much we can do as the checklist could use some revision. Do what you feel for now. You are at a slight disadvantage as when you see the photos in FC things can be more obvious like on Hawaiian Pearl. It has a very distinctive edge.

Crossville, TN(Zone 6b)

Hearts Aglow (8516) 11/09/1996 (S. Sorano) Semidouble fuchsia star/ivory blush. Dark green, quilted/red back. Standard
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/131590/

What do you do with the word "blush"?
linda

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

That Heart's Aglow has an ivory/white eyezone. You could just select fuchsia and whit/near white.

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

O's are done as far as I can go.
I'll move on to Q and V.

Emporia, KS(Zone 5b)

Snowrose...yes ; )

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thank you bunches, Jan. I dmailed on the O's in question.

Emporia, KS(Zone 5b)

just looking at this...critterologist did the descriptions on D. I think the plan is that I'll be helping her with C once she gets back, too.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks for the L details, cjolene!

OK, on critter. Got it.
