Just starting out!!!

Antioch, TN

Hi all...ok so I was visiting a friend this weekend and she was telling me about this site and she got me all excited about my gardening...I have a garden outside and I have been kinda living in the world of trial and error...but now hopefully I have found my saving grace!!! Soooo I went to Lowes yesterday just to buy dirt to repot a plant that has not been growing and there was a rack of plants that were looking kinda droopy that were on sale for 1/2 price. I thought I would buy an orchid so I was looking them over...well the manager came over and said it is too hot of a summer to keep up with all of the plants so she would sell my the whole rack(about 50 plants) for $25...well, I could not just leave all of those little orpans there to die of thirst, so now I have a really big family that I have no idea what they need! I think most of them are indoor plants...but I am not sure! I live in Nashville and we are having a really HOT summer. I have taken a couple of pictures and I am going to include them but I don't really know much about this site...should I take individual photos and post them somewhere? Please help me...

Individual photos are definitely the best, you can post them all in one thread if you want or start individual threads. You'll probably get answers on what some of them are here, but if there are some that you're not getting answers on, you could post them on the Plant Identification forum and you'll almost definitely get an answer there.

Thank you I will do that...

Hi until you get sorted I would put those plants in a sheltered place....I can see some tender plants there....just give them shade until you are sure or they will burn off......great buy! :)

I agree with giving the plants some shelter from the direct sunlight with shade cloth or burlap. And keep the soil evenly watered. I used to buy bargain plants, but they always were too depleted to be satisfactory when I got them home. They were in pots at too long, and the root systems were exhausted.

I agree with Chrissy, some of your plants need a bit of shade, your Agave can take more sun than the others, (that's the one with the fleshy leaves like long arrows/blades) good for sun burn and wounds on the skin, but because they are all in pots, that means not a lot of soil around the root, so the roots will dry out very fast, better to be safe than sorry, some like the peace lily (the one with the leaf like a spade and has spots, needs full shade and plenty moisture where as the others when planted will prefer half/dapple shade, or even part day shade. again water when planted, add a good plant food to the soil or better still some well rotted animal manure and compost to the planting soil, this will feed the plants and conserve moisture a bit. you did well as they all look quite healthy for sale plants, but as the season is almost over for them, then you could if you can, re pot them into larger pots with a feed and water, place them in a shaded area till the end of the warm summer, then plant them into the garden where you want and offer them the conditions they require, as you have just taken over the garden, a good idea for winter would be to go to your library and get out some books on plants as they give pictures, growing conditions and soil type required, you will be surprised at how many plants you will recognise from the books and it gives you lots of good ideas as for planting borders in time for next season, good luck and happy new gardening, dont be shy asking any questions on the forums as we will soon find help for you from someone.
