Please help to verify & correct the AV pages in PF

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I think that containers should be marked also, along with growing indoors.

I don't get the winter interest option. To me that is for plants that grow outside but have red bark or something after losing their leaves? How does it apply to AV's?

That's my opinion as well. :o) I think we should add as much correct and pertinent information as possible to each entry. However, it could be argued that, since the full FC description should be on each one, we could search for the main color and then scroll down to the comments and read the full description to see if it matches what we want. I really can see both sides of this debate.

Emporia, KS(Zone 5b)

Good point, but after all this corrected info has been added, more cultivars will be added. Those people may not have added the description at the bottom.

I can go either way on containers. My thought was, if it grows indoors, then it has to be in a container.

I agree totally on the winter interest part. It has nothing to do with indoor plants at all. I vote we leave that one unchecked or report an error to have it removed. Of course, the error report would increase your workload. ;o)

True, cj, which drives home the point that this is not a one time fix. We're all going to have to keep up with the Gesneriad PlantFiles entries from now on, not just until we've repaired the current entries.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Rain, I agree with your assessment on RainMan from the options we have to choose from.

Right, "winter interest' applies to outdoor plants that have winter interest like berries, red stems, and so forth, etc. It is N/A for violets. Leave blank.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

OK..........rain................I am only checking descriptions and the name................you are doing the rest...........got it!!!!!!!

So listing all the colors in the bloom, not just the main color, is acceptable to everyone?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Personally I'm not nuts about it...but I guess the consensus is to include all colors.

Seems confusing to me. But, since we are including the official description, then that will clarify and make sense of it all from the checklist.

(I'm just thinking about reading from the checklist that a blossom is green, white, purple, and pink. )

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Tell me if I am doing this right? when I find that there is no description I am turning in that as an error rather than filling it in...........is that correct? Also, am I correct in also including the size in the description as Amy doesn't have the first class to see that it is a semi miniature trailer.........

I'm not trying to make the final decision. That's why I asked all those questions in the first place. My opinion is certainly not necessarily the opinion of the majority. cj and I thought it was best to check all the colors, but mystic said that she normally only checks the main color when doing an entry with a white edge, etc. I'll do whatever everyone else thinks is best. I just want to know up front how to go about it. :o)

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Amy......................didn't we decide that I am to leave the size alone and you will pick it up in the description..............although in the description, it is never listed.............it is in a different area on the master list...................

I am confused.................i am turning in everything as an error when, in reality, it is blank........should I just be filling in the description and not turning it in as an error???????????

Gail, normally the size is listed at the end of the FC description. You should add the description to the comments area yourself, rather than submitting an error report.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Quoting:
....i am turning in everything as an error when, in reality, it is blank........should I just be filling in the description and not turning it in as an error???????????

If it's blank, then someone can easily fill it in themselves. No need to send a report for us to do it. You only need to send in an error report if a field is already filled in with the wrong information.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

As for the color Ya'll need to decide what is best for the AV, you can do it however you want just agree on it among yourselves. gessiegail you don't need to send a report if things aren't filled in you can fill those in yourself you have the info. If it's filled in and not correct then send us a report and we will fix it. We are not going to fill in all the details but correct details that have been entered incorrectly. Ya'll are doing great I'm impressed. The AV's will be fixed up in no time with all your help.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

That is because people are just adding that................but officially that is not part of the description..................I will just add that since so many people like to see it there and it has been done a lot I notice...............

OK...........good to go...................

Oh, OK It's listed on so many of them, I just thought it was part of the description itself. If you'll tack that on the end, like most of them I've seen are done, I'll take care of the size checkbox. That way, all you have to work with is the comments section, and I'll work on the checkboxes. :o)

Thanks for helping us so much, Joan and mystic! We appreciate it so much!

Joan, you'll have Dave fix the pH settings, so I shouldn't submit those as error reports, right?

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Right, I've alerted Dave to my mistake. I'm sure he'll fix it, but most likely not tonight.

OK I just didn't want to send a bunch of unneeded error reports. ;o)

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

I just checked in cjolene above posted she would like a partner anybody that has the CD that would like to work with her.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I can work with two people as my job of just checking names, descriptions and adding the size to the descriptions is a lot faster work than the one filling in the left.....................tell me where to start cjolene...............amy has a lot of work to do .............so I stopped at a certain point.........
I am just choosing positive as I have not grown all of these............and i don't think you can leave it blank............let's face it............if you have grown one of a series you know how the plant grows and whether you like it...................

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

gessiegal, when filling in the comment, just leave the positive/neutral/negative alone. Since the comments are informational, rather than experience with the plant, leaving it alone will make the system automatically mark it neutral.

Joan, I'll submit an error report to have you remove "Provides Winter Interest". Also, I'll check "Suitable for containers" where I can and submit an error report to have you add that where I can't. Acceptable with you?

Thanks!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Perfect!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

OK............i didn't think I could leave it alone, Joan...........great.................

Off I go, then! :o)

Going to aggravate you one more time, Joan. I just sent an error report on 'Rain Man' and asked for the height information to be removed. There are a LOT that have the height information. Do we want to remove that on each of them, or just not add it to anymore?

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

I'm the one that responded to that report. I think the anything marked to 6-12 or even under 6" is not incorrect . Is the height another field you think should be removed all together?

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

We (admins) have talked about the height. As long as they are marked 6-12 inches, they are accurate. This is a field that was set up back in March when the fields were all revamped, so it is a relevant field that should/could be filled in.

The minis and semiminis shouldn't be that tall, though. Perhaps we could put under 6 in for them?

Plain is not an option under Leaf Shape/Type, so I'm leaving that blank.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Sounds right to me Amy. If they are marked incorrectly, then report what they should be and we'll fix it.

Thank you, Joan. I guess I should have asked if leaving that blank for plain was correct...

Emporia, KS(Zone 5b)

Great, gessiegail! I'd start with D. Looks like there's 4 pages of that. Ought to keep me busy for a while. lol

(Zone 1)

Wish I could be of some help in all of this ... but I don't have the First Class CD. I'm good at typing, spelling and proof-reading, but, I don't guess I can be of any help to y'all with all of these corrections since I don't have access to First Class. It sure is a huge undertaking and I Thank you all for your efforts!

Did I read correctly in an above post, that PF was corrupted by someone here on DG, on purpose?! I just can't believe someone would maliciously do something like that! Could it have been a bug or virus that did this?? Is PF available to subscribers and non subscribers alike? It's going to take so long to make all these corrections! Is there any way once all of PF is fixed there could be a "lock" put on it so that only certain individuals would be able to fill in information? The info could be d-mailed to one of those folks for the data input? There must be some way to prevent this from happening again!

Please let me know if any of you think of a way I could be of help!

Lin

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Lin, once some details are marked off, nobody else can go in and change them. The only danger is in the fields that aren't filled in. We'll just have to keep an eye on them. and report any that are wrong.

I don't think it was someone that did this maliciously. Just people that didn't have the correct information.

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

I'd like to help,I have the program but I'm just trying to figure it out how to do it.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

OK.....................I am sending Amy first class tomorrow...........but we will continue with the R's...............Lin, as soon as Amy gets her First Class then we can add more people helping........I will send you one, too.............

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Be careful about sharing the CD. It is copyrighted, and when we buy it we agree that we will only load it on two of our own computers.
