Liz, you always answer questions so succinctly! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=3885739
And yes, I have seen some pretty long ones!

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Well I certainly found an answer to all my questions here! And I am very glad I don't live in either of those two Kooger! But, I bet the first one would be so much fun to visit! I think it is so amazing that a potential problem arises and Dave gets it taken care of so quickly and quietly that most people probably didn't even notice. If this were any of the places I have "worked" at....it would have been a week of no service while the tech-heads decided how to fix it and when it should be done and what to do after....you get the picture. Such a pleasure to be here, rather than there!

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

I was just reading a thread and noticed one long location. It's a good example of what everyone here is talking abt. You can easily see how one long location shortens the message box. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/759035/#top (you have to scroll quite a way before you find it)

edit: the location has been shortened since this was first posted.

That one's long because they're in the US and spelled out United States, unfortunately the 20 character limit on cities won't catch stuff like that. The country isn't really necessary if you are in the US, you see the state abbreviation and that pretty much gives it away. Although I did have one person think I lived in Ireland once because they just looked at my location really quickly!

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Aha! Now I see what the deally bob is! And that really isn't necessary is it? US would work just as easily and save a bunch....but the rest? ...okay, Now I Understand!!

Crossville, TN

Kooger....I had been reading the same thread you had....and I thought the sme thing....I wish everyone would read this....and go change their location to comply with the new 20 space rule. Jo

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

The 20 space rule only applies to the city, and Dave made it so if your city is longer than that the system will automatically shorten it for you, so nobody needs to take any action in order to comply with the new rule, the system does it for you.

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

Thanks for the repeated clarification Liz, I'm beginning to feel guilty each time I post...but you made that unnecessary....guess I'll have to find something else to feel guilty about! Big smiles!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Actually, the "(United States)" is displayed only if you choose the country, but don't choose a state.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

The person in the thread that kooger linked to had OH listed as their state, and then also had United States listed--maybe that was a bug of some sort? When I look at it this morning the United States part is gone.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I edited their profile to include the state from the pulldown list (instead of it being typed out in the city field.) All is well now ;o)

Crossville, TN

Isn't Terry wonderful? We'll call her the "Over-extended location name patrol leader"!! LOL Jo

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

We could start a thread dedicated to naming the different hats she wears!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Chuckle...something tells me that stack o'hats would look very Dr. Seuss-ish ;o)

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

I have visions of you sitting at a keyboard swaying to and fro to keep all the hats from tumbling off ....nice reason to smile!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Is that Seuss......or the Mad Hatter's Birthday Party????

Rio Rico, AZ(Zone 8a)

"hick"...the hatter's hat *hick* went splat *hick* on the cat....I always loved the doormouse! *hick*

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Hmmm, am I only one to notice the address under Islandshari's name now "wraps"? If it didn't before, just ignore me 'cause I'm getting dotty in my old age.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

That Dave, gittin' it done behind the scenes!

Coast range of, OR(Zone 8b)

Katy - that's the first thing I noticed this morning also! I agree with Sheila - Dave....he just so on-top-of-things.

Crossville, TN

I noticed it yesterday too....Love it. Jo

Yep, I changed the system so that if there is a country present, then give a line break. That should pretty much 100% solve this issue.

best,
dave

Crossville, TN

Dave....You're "wunnerful" Thank you....thank you verymuch! Jo

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

wondering if the change Dave made to put the country on the next line is no longer active? I have been noticing some really long locations. Examples are posts 7059147 and 7095948. Both have a country.

When I am viewing from my home computer, it's not that big of a deal, as it is easy to scroll. But, most of the time, I access the site now from my iPhone. When I use the iPhone, in the sideways, wider mode, if the locations do not get longer than the month, such as this month's September with date and year, I can see who posted and the text is still large enough to read without enlarging or having to scroll left and right with each post to see who posted what. When you get into locations such as in 7095948 where there are 36 letters and spaces, it throws the whole thread off.

Perhaps if a location takes up more than 20 spaces it could stack? That way they would not be longer than any of the dates. I read above that Dave limited the city names to 20 spaces, but with some of the long countries too...????

I imagine there are many people who look at the site with a "smart phone." More and more people are using them, as well as some of the new iPods that have browsing capabilities. Granted it's not the end of the world, but I always feel myself "roll my eyes" when the long location people post to the threads I am watching. Like, oh, boy, here we go again.

Thank you!

Dover AFB, DE(Zone 7a)

Is there a way to put the country on another line? That would help in my case...

edited to add: Wow! now I see what y'all are talking about! That sure did change the thread size when I posted!

Hope that this can be fixed.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

A couple posts above, from back in 2007, it looks like Dave had things set up to put the country on the next line, if a country was selected.

I was wondering if this is still the way things are set up? If so, it does not appear to be working.

Since nobody responded to my bringing this back up, I assumed I was the only one this was affecting.

Dover AFB, DE(Zone 7a)

I just moved here a few weeks ago and didn't realize the problem until I read this thread and posted on it. It looks like my address takes an inch+ away from the column for posts.

Crossville, TN

Maybe if you used just S. Korea....? Jo

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Juneybug...
If you want to make a change, go to "MyInfo" at the top, then click "Manage your preferences", then on the right click "..location".

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I think country choice is a drop down selection - not something the individual fills in.
So, I do not think she can use S.Korea as it is not one of the choices.

This should be fixed "for sure" now. :)

Dover AFB, DE(Zone 7a)

Thank you!

Crossville, TN

I think Dave has a magic wand!!! LOL Jo

^_^

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Alright Dave!!! Cudoos!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh, Dave, THANK YOU!!!!!!

It is a small thing, but a big thing to me when I read the site so often from my phone.

Thanks again!!!!
