I am very new @ this- in zone 6. Do I have to lift peonies and lilies at the end of the season?
Thanks,
Karen
Lifting Bulbs
i'm zone 6 too, and never lift peonies or lilies, and both always come back every year. as long as you have them planted deep enough they should do fine. the only thing i pull out every year is gladiolas. i left them in the ground one winter, and they came up fine the next year, but the second winter was a LOT wetter, and we lost over a hundred bulbs, so now they get pulled up every winter and packed away in shredded newspaper.
Where I grew up it was zone 5b and my mom never did anything with the peonies, just left them alone and they were fine the next year.
After the frost kills the fo;iage you can cut back the dead "stuff".
I like to mulch mine with 3-4 inches of shredded leaves.
Tender bulbs such as canna's and dahlias need to be dug in the fall after the first frost.
