BURNT CRAPE MYRTLE LEAVES

Rio Rancho, NM

I live in New Mexico, I planted 8 Crape Mrytles but one of them keeps drooping a bit. When I water it, it perks up but now the leaves are burnt and looks like they are going to start dropping off. What is wrong?

Thanks

Did you just plant these this summer? A couple things are possibilities, if it's recently planted it could be sunburn, when the plant was at the nursery it's possible it wasn't in quite as much sun as it is now, and if took it and all of a suddent put it in more sun than it was used to rather than adjusting it gradually then the leaves can burn (this kind of burn usually looks more like the leaf bleaching out). The other more likely possibility is transplant shock, especially in hot climates summer is the absolute worst time of year to plant anything and it's very stressful for plants. Even if you planted it in the spring, if it didn't have time to get established before it got hot, it could still be suffering from transplant shock (maybe its roots were less well developed or were damaged more during planting than your other plants) When they are constantly alternating between wilting and then perking back up, it's not surprising that the leaves wouldn't look so great. It sounds to me like you may not be giving it quite enough water, you might try watering it a little more frequently than you have been and see if that helps. If you don't think it's either of these things, can you post a picture?

In addition to extra water as ecrane suggests, you might also try to rig up something to shade your tree during the hottest part of the day. We've been having triple digit weather over here in MS and I've seen numerous full grown crape myrtles that have lost all their leaves and have only their flowers left. Fortunately, mine are shaded during the afternoon and are doing well in spite of the heat.
