My BIL told me that he uses cedar shavings and newspaper to seperate and store potaoes for the winter.
Can any type of shavings work for storage?
We don't have a huge amount to store.
Thanks!

Storing Potatoes for Winter in Shavings?
My grandmother always used newspapers to wrap her potatoes for winter storage in her storm cellar. They were free, of course. She HAD to use something that worked as she depended on her garden for food all year.
I have no idea about the shavings, possibly someone else can advise you on that.
i've never heard of that. we always had a potato bin in our basement, well up off the floor, with room for air to get through the slats. we never put any thing other than potatoes in the bin and i can't remember every having rotten potatoes. of course i was pretty young then, so i'd have to ask my granny to be sure LOL i'll be interested to hear more on this subject :D
I know cedar is used in dog beds and stuff to keep insects away.So probably helps for veges too.Deanna
