Morning Glories 2007 # 18

(Zone 7a)

Arlen, who can be flabbergasted by your MGs and not be curious about their and related genetics? To fellow flabbergasters, here's a great link along those lines:

http://www.shigen.nig.ac.jp/shigen/news/n_letter/2006/newsletter_v2_n3En.html;jsessionid=2B408B35338050CE6208E78C7C9B9F82.tomcat4_1

Figure 2 makes a great wallpaper to stretch over your computer monitor and then to ponder for a few days - it's easier to make sense of the caption under it.

Another link to assist in pondering the foregoing is:

http://protist.i.hosei.ac.jp/Asagao/Yoneda_DB/E/species/flower_pattern.html

And then, to put our knowledge to work (I know most of us are already doing this), is a project posed by Ron: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=3579155

One thing the first link mentions in Figure 6, which is similar to Ron's, is that flaked and flore-pleno (double) phenotypes tend to revert to the wild, so that if any of us are lucky enough to be growing them, we do need to try to pollinate some pods for keeping the strain true.

How many of us fooling around with pollen this summer are wishing our vines would hurry up and bloom already? Frank, remember you were interested in folks reporting how long from sowing to blooming various MGs took? The first link mentions that blooming can be forced by imposing short days on an MG, so, to me, that suggests that the farther north we are, the more time blooming from sowing will take, since we northerners get progressively longer days the farther from the equater we are. Well, hmmmpf - so that's why many of mine are just twiddling their leaves. The major exception and first to bloom I. nil is 'Star of India, which looks like it's finishing up with blooming and its pods are ripening now.

If I have misinterpreted anything or otherwise goofed, I look forward to being enlightened - would certainly like to hear everyone's thoughts.

Thanks, everyone! Arlan, those are some real beauties you have there! Welcome back!

Emma, I hope Hurricane Dean stays away from you but its path doesn't look promising for Texas.

Joseph

I hope this Fujishibori makes some seeds, so far I don't see too many seed capsules.

The flowers of JMG #6 have such a pure white color to show the red specks. I once suggested calling the flower 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' in jest to a fellow gardener, but was met with all kinds of protestations. It could catch on with the fringe gardeners maybe? LOL

Joseph:Nice mg,the color is pretty!

JMG #19 had a nice blue spot of color on its anthers, I sure like this hue of blue.

'Star of Yelta' is a nice flowering vine, it sends out hundreds of these perfect flowers over the course of time.

Joseph:I love!that one.That blue color is nice!Gotta have that one.LOL!

Thanks, Karla, I agree!

Last one...I know this isn't a MG but wanted to show its way cool leaves. It is Epixiphium wislizenii, 'Netcup Vine'. Leaves feel a little like rubber when fondled. I am looking forward to flowers but no sign of buds yet.

Nice!healthy looking leaves.I know this is not a mg.I have to share a photo of my brug cutting that bloomed.First time bloom for me.Rosatraum.I was impressed with the fragrance.I noticed yesterday evening, I have a couple different buds forming on 2 different brugs.

Thanks all! It is good to be home for a few days!

bluespiral, thanks for that first link. That one is new to me!

Joseph, always love the Fujishibori! Here is one to go along side it! It is from the Q0663 system... this system also carries the maple willow.....

..this is another flower from the same plant this morning...

Atenkley:Gorgeous!MG,looks feathery.

Robertsdale, AL(Zone 8b)

This is what you get when the crepe gene (causes the reverse tube) and the duplicate gene (causes the double flower) are expressed in the same plant...

If you look closely, you can see the reverse tube.

Robertsdale, AL(Zone 8b)

..here is another angle. You can see the reverse tube down inside the flower, and the same "wind bell" structure on the inner duplication that you see on the feathered duplicates.

Joseph,
Me too - hope that Hurricane Dean avoids me. We have had ENOUGH RAIN. I haven't checked the weather today, but last I heard it was going to hit the Virgin Islands. My oldest granddaughter, Bailey, is living there this year with her father in St. Thomas.

Arlan,
OMG!
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=3870695
YOU ARE THE WINNER!
This has to be one of the most beautiful JMG blooms I've yet seen.
I'll do yard clean up for a week for you if I can have a couple of seeds *-*

Here is not a great photo, but these blooms are HUGE.
I isolated this seed last year from Burpee Sunrise Mix and the blooms are just opening on this vine. Any idea of name on this one?

Lovely blooms everyone. I haven't visited the MG forum much...having a VERY disappointing MG year. I'd say 90% of what I planted has not bloomed to be what it was supposed to be. Many turned out to be (purpurea) morning glories when they were supposed to be something else. No more auction purchases for me (from anyone other than folks here at the forums!)

Sandy, that has to be very disappointing. I feel your pain.

Joseph

sandy
been there ..one way to spot i.purpurea seeds is that they are way much smaller than the i.nils
