Morning Glories 2007 # 18

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Beth,
Yes, Ronnie's bloom is streaked very slightly . . .

This is the same as I was getting in my original blooms that I singled out the solid white from

Emma

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Oh Emma a beauty if I ever saw one!! Aren't grand-daughters wonderful!!

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Ronnie. . .
She is a little cutie,

Emma

Here is a photo of the future seed capsule of Ipomoea albivenia, along with a flower. Look for the hairlike structure at the tip of the green olive-sized developing seed capsule. I was able to detect its fragrance from about 6 feet away last night. It is definitely worth the wait of a couple growing seasons to see these flowers.

The blue flowering vine that was mixed in with the seeds of 'Shikanoko' sure has some variability...I think these variants are all on the same vine. I need to check the soil surface to see how many plants are in the container.

Here is Ipomoea obscura Ethiopia that J. L. Hudson, Seedsman offered a couple years ago, really putting on a floral show this week.

Thumbnail by

Here is another flower of Hewittia malabarica, a softer yellow than I. obscura. Too bad these flowers only last a day each.

Joseph... Beautiful!!!!

I can't seem to capture the deeper violet color of this flower. It shows up in the image as a more blue than in real life.

Thanks, Ronnie, isn't it fun growing these gems?

Last one for the night, this one too is a darker hue than the camera captures in the picture. Maybe a polarizing filter can help.

Cool cool cool. Yellow morning glories. Awesome Joseph. It's interesting that there don't seem to be too many yellow ones, isn't it? Pinks, purples, blues and whites seem to dominate.

Joanne

The yellow ones seem to be rare in Ipomea nil, however there are other species that have yellowish flowers. They are nice to see in real life!

Emma, beautiful g daughter. Love the icy, pale blue Jamie Lynn

Joseph, Love the yellows.

Thank you, Jackie . . .

I take it this is Heavenly Blue? I've never seen them before up close.

Revclaus, it looks like Heavenly Blue - how 'bout taking a gander at the following link to see if the sepals on your vine match the ones for Ipomoea tricolor - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=3504567 ? You don't have to look at all the links, just one for I. tricolor, and if that isn't it, then one for each of the other two.

That is a great link that uses sepals as an identifying characteristic for Ipomoea nil, I. purpurea, I. tricolor and I. hederacea.

Emma, as my southern aunts used to say, Precious! Very cute granddaughter.

Emma, Revclaus, Ronnie, Karla, & Joseph - y'all should be charging admission. Maybe someday we'll do a thread around here on fragrant morning glories - would love a whiff of I. albivenia.

Emma, this is from your 'Rose Silk ID#006'

Bluespiral:your rose silk is pretty!

Pam :The cameo elegance grows well in hanging baskets. One of my favorites this year is the violet sunsmiles.

Who is Joyce Cobb?

(Zone 7a)

Beth, I wonder if Joyce Cobb's the one that Google says was the first female to have a nightclub named after her? jazz singer?

Pam, I had horrible die-back of some lilies killed by the lily beetle last year, and Cameo Elegance covered a low, 40" x 5' trellis so completely with its white splashed leaves, that you'd never know a disaster had hit the same spot. Was wonderful with a red-leaved canna from Critterologist. A hanging pot would really set it off.

But OMG those rose silks - this is my 2nd summer growing them. I think we really have to try a little extra to get these ones to set seed. Ronnie, have you experienced this with the rose silks?

Thank you Karla, my Sunsmiles are burgeoning nicely with gorgeous white-splashed leaves, but no flowers yet grrr

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

bluespiral, thanks for the link. Definitely Heavenly Blue. At least now I know what they look like. LOL

(Zone 7a)

welcome, Revclaus. Welp, there are some vines needing separation from each other - am I the only one around here who feels like they're being offered up as sacrifice to the sungod this time of year when doing that? Couldn't do it earlier - the cutest raccoon needed to be relocated.

I have a question. Gardener2005 posted a picture of an all white Hige http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=3856158 This one, unlike mine has the heart shaped leaves, and the stems look to be reddish. Is this also an I. purpurea?

Here's a picture of one of today's blooms. I am getting more and more blooms each day, I am so happy with this plant!!

Thanks Karen-blue,
and Thanks for sharing your Rose Silk. Very pretty blooms aren't they!

Pam,
I agree, love the color of your Rose Silk, and Thanks to you about my little precious Jamie Lynn.
And, Yes, Jamie Lynn MG is Ipomoea purpurea.

Ron can tell you the story about who Joyce Cobb is, I can't recall.

momcat, yes, it is a purpurea. Your white one is beautiful. :)

Thanks, I was just curious, since mine has all green stems, and different leaves.
Deb

Look what I found the other day.

Oh Joseph I think that's the one I lost!! You can just send it back!! ☺

Robertsdale, AL(Zone 8b)

Yikes! I'm gone a week and have to go through multiple picture threads! Everyone is growing some real beauties this year. As I am especially attracted to the unusual... this one of Joseph's really caught my eye. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=3866056

Ronnie, it looks like your Sazanami flowers this year are even lighter than they were for me last year...very nice.

Joseph, your speckled reverse tube is a treat!

I have several strains that were blooming when I returned last night. Here are a couple highlights...

Thumbnail by atenkley
Robertsdale, AL(Zone 8b)

...a nice white margined red double...

Thumbnail by atenkley
Robertsdale, AL(Zone 8b)

..and one with a bit more pink tones..

Thumbnail by atenkley
Robertsdale, AL(Zone 8b)

..this white throated lavender reverse tube has some interesting foliage also...

Thumbnail by atenkley
Robertsdale, AL(Zone 8b)

..these purples are really much darker than the photo captured. Hopefully they will produce some better structural reverse tubes!

Thumbnail by atenkley
Robertsdale, AL(Zone 8b)

..and lastly, a double in white, part of a white double feathered system. You can see why the Japanese call these types "peony"!
